I would think that the macbook is aimed at the more 'fiscally challenged' of Apple's customers. The very people who tend to buy and then hang on to equipment - like camcorders. The very people who cannot solve a problem by throwing money at it. The very peope who would have been lured to an apple macbook by its ease, range and efficacy of use. All the latter have been compromised by the simple removal of firewire connectivity.

Will they correct it in the future? Or is it a case of 'Apple giveth and Apple taketh away'?

Sure they can connect in the future. Firewire isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Roughly 2/3's of Newegg's 150 or so Windows C2D Intel laptops currently available for purchase feature built-in Firewire.

The reward for coping with that complexity is the opportunity to buy whatever hardware they need to get the job done. No enslavement to One voice, One power, One supplier.
I must say I'm daunted at the prospect but I know I won't be the only one who has to face it.

You do realize that the FW is only leaving their MacBook line at this point right? You sound dramatically mad at Apple. This one item was the straw that broke your camel's back I am guessing? Is there a lot more evidence that Apple is abandoning their traditional core? (photographers etc.)

Apple disappointed me!

My macbook pro got stolen four months ago. I just had it for a little over a month when it was stolen. I resisted the temtation to buy a new one knowing apple will be coming out with an new line of Macbooks. Now that it has come out, THERE IS NO FREAKIN' FIREWIRE! Now i maybe forced to buy the new Pro, which is more expensive, bigger and a pound heavier than the Macbook. One pound is a lot when you're lugging your computer for a whole day!

[IRONY]I agree. Apple should be whipped for not including Firewire as an upgrade option for people who lost their previous machines. I mean, c'mon Apple![/IRONY]

Now I know why so many people start to whine about posts on this forum.
Why, because Apple are really to blame for dishonesty and thievery? And this relates to how wise an idea it was to remove firewire how, precisely?

Oh, excuse me, I forgot this thread was just an excuse for flaming Apple irrationally. :D

Naughty Apple. Ship of fools.

There. Job done.

a) capture from another computer
b) buy a usb avchd camcorder
c) use a pro machine to do your editing
d) do nothing

Nooooo

I have waited ages for a new laptop from apple. I have an old 12" powerbook G4 which has served me really well. I use it for video capture as there is no small laptop alternative. However there is no firewire on the new 13". This is a massive disappointment. All decent cameras use firewire. It makes imovie, express and idvd pointless. you basically have to go back 8 yrs and edit video on a desktop considering the size of the macbook pro.

saying that we should have seen it coming because the new imovie is disappointing as well.

How are all decent cameras only using firewire? So tape is the past and present of all cameras? Forget about flash memory and hard disks? BTW I just edited HD video on a new MacBook this afternoon ;)

Well because most USB camera have NO manual features and are compressed horribly.

Not good for Prosumers that would use Final Cut Express.

The only tapeless cameras with full manual features cost about $6,000 which is well out of the range of prosumers and more for true Pros.

I must not have the "golden eye" ( as in the golden ear argument that audiophiles get into) because I have an AVCHD camera that has video that absolutely amazes me.

Pro Tools with the new MB

Hello all -

I've been reading this thread thoroughly to try and decide if I can use the newly released Macbook with protools. So here's my question:

Can I run a USB powered External HD with Pro Tools on the new Macbook? Or do I have to resort to buying the new Macbook Pro because Pro tools requires use of a Firewire External Drive?

Much thanks in advance!

Cliff

any updates on this? Will that ethernet firewire adapter work with this macbook? There has to be a USB adapter solution that will come out to battle this, no?

FW 800 to FW 400 - Does that work?

I read through most of the pages of this thread and I have one question. The new MBP says it has FW 800 (One FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps)). So can a FW 400 to FW 800 work for older Sony camcorders with mini DV tapes to export into iMovie? I didn't know if anyone has tried it?

Any FW port should work for any digital tape based video camera. I used a Sony DV camera from work and it worked perfectly.

Booting from Firewire / Firewire Disk mode

Without FireWire:
  • No booting from external firewire disk
  • FYC: Booting from external USB disk is not supported (I wo not know wether from USB or from OS X).
  • MacBook can not be booted into firewire target disk mode => you will never be able to migrate a current new MacBook to a probably next one...

So, two of the best advantages of OS X may no longer be used on new MacBooks.

The firewire interface is a 50 cent part (if you buy it as Apple as SMD part for the mainboard). I will never understand, why this has been omitted on the new MacBook.

Dito for the missing :apple: on the Command Key.

Shame on you, Apple!

im in denial

there must be a hardware solution for those of us with the new 13" macbook, or something to be released in the future. if USB 2.0 is supposedly faster than FW 400, then why is an adapter such a crazy idea??

The only hardware solution is a computer with Firewire capability. Sell the MacBook; it's pretty much worthless for editing.

USB and Firewire are both data transfer protocols. USB transfers data in packets (short bursts) while Firewire transfers data in a sustained stream. It's the sustained stream that most NLEs need to work with video properly ... it isn't about which is faster. Most NLEs will see the gaps between the data bursts of USB as dropped frames.

While USB 2.0 is spec'ed at a higher speed than Firewire, in real world applications it is actually slower.
