Given the mbp all have a low and high end model, could it not mean that only the high end counter part gets the bells and whistle?

Seems like an optimum solution, no?

Maybe Apple will reduce price on MBA/P without retina prices and introduce MBA/P HD with retina Display?

Mankind has lived very good without retina displays until a few months ago, i'm sure, there are a lot of people who are quite happy with the current screen resolutions. A price cut of $100-$150 without retina display would make those devices interesting for a lot more people.

but they can not make the macbook pro thinner while having the retina display and the same 45 watt cpu.

They could easily make the Macbook thinner, with all of those, the optical drive is what makes it the thickest, not the CPU or monitor in an opposing package, are you kidding me?

If the rumour that losing the drive is true, the empty space left behind would mean changing the layout to stick a larger battery?

but the 45 watt cpu and a discrete gpu cannot be accomodated in a thin profile. because it requires heat sinks and fans which takes up the vertical dimension not the horizontal dimension.

thats why macbook air is thicker at the back because fans and heatsinks are at the back.

Wow. 1280x800?

Asus just put 1080p in their Zenbook, and Apple are staying with this resolution. I have to say that I am disappointed, Apple often used to push higher resolutions.

EDIT: Unless they are the specs of some kind of bottom line cheaper alternative, that is. Or it might be fake. :)

This will be the cheapest, bottom-spec 13" MBP. The CPU makes sense in comparison to the 2011 base-level MBP.

The cheapest late 2011 MBP used the I5-2435M, which is 2.4 GHz and turbo to 3 GHz (single core). It is the cheapest OEM dual core i5 CPU in the late 2011 SB line-up. The CPU that replaces it in Ivy Bridge is i5-3210M, which is 2.5 GHz with single core turbo up to 3.1 GHz.

The specifications make sense. Whether it's fake or not, I cannot say. But I would think lots of people would be happy to see Gigabit Ethernet, Firewire and ODD remain considering the firestorm that broke out when the rumours came around that these may be removed.

Does anyone else find it strange that Apple would altogether discontinue the USB 2.0 port, given that all current iDevices use them? I think this is a fake.

I'm sure someone else probably posted this before me ... but couldn't this be the new Macbook? Basically, axe-ing the MBP 13" and rebranding it as the entry level Macbook.

That would explain why there haven't been any rumors for the MBP 13" and all of the rumors have revolved around the MBP 15" and the Macbook airs.

This seems plausible, at least to me.

Well that's because that the Air is getting the Redesign. Retina, no ODD, no Superdrive, no Ethernet, 15 inch computer, which Jobs Axed in the last year. Everything points to this idea.

Thinner MBP is not possible at this moment because there is no technology that could handle the heat which will be produced by Ivy Bridge, and dGPU's. Check the tests of new computers with Ivy Bridge. They are warmer than the same construction with Sandy Bridge. And are a lot thicker than MBP.

Worst thing on new MBP's is that if they will get no redesign, and still will be OD(which MUST be to help cooling the computer), the battery life will be slightly lower...

Maybe this is fake, but it seems more likely that the 13 isn't getting a makeover but the 15 and/or 17 are. Same goes for retina display, it's fairly expensive so it would make sense that the cheapest 13 might not have it while pricier models would.

I don't think this really tells us much beyond that the form factor on the 13 isn't changing (and it's even possible that there is a redesigned 13 and they're keeping this as a cheap model, maybe mainly for education).

Sure this is nothing to get excited about, but if they dropped it to $999 and redesigned all the higher models that wouldn't bother me. Heck, for all we know Apple may be getting really aggressive and making this their new $899 model, which would sell like hotcakes at that price.

Does anyone else find it strange that Apple would altogether discontinue the USB 2.0 port, given that all current iDevices use them? I think this is a fake.

No, it's not at all strange. USB 3 is backwards compatible so all USB 2 devices will work. What do you find strange about this?

have you opened the macbook pro?

the optical drive takes the horizontal space not the vertical one.

the vertical height is still dominated by the fans and the heatsink.

I'm going to cry.

A thinner 13in MBP with retina (or at the very least, higher resolution) and a dedicated GPU, USB3.0, plus standard SSD (or easily user-upgradeable) and user-upgradeable RAM sounded like a dream!

RAM upgrade is overrated. Especially when you have SSD. I have upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8. Better swiping between apps, only slight, that's it. I don't see a huge jump in performance, just a tad, just a tad. However an user-upgradeable SSD would be a BIG plus for me. Esp when price of SSD falls to an affordable level. It will be nice to have a 1 TB SSD under a smallish 13" chassis. It is a freakin' dream, Apple, a freakin' dream.

I've said this over a hundred times it feels like, No the Retina display wouldn't require much more GPU power, and the screen will require more battery, but come on, you really expect it to be THAT drastic?!

Why won't a quadrupled resolution display need a more powerful GPU? The iPad 3 went from a 543MP2 to a 543MP4, and the battery went from 25 Whr to 42.5 Whr. Seems like the hi-res display caused pretty drastic changes in the product.

When this gets announced at WWDC, the presenter better get booed off the stage.
Could be a cheaper model for the education space. Otherwise I cannot see them announcing it at WWDC. To underwhelming to warrant it.

Doesn't mean we won't see any Retina displays for Macs. Maybe it'll be as a BTO option, or only available on the 15 inch for some reason lol

I mean we could also be looking at a base model here.

Come on people, would you rather them have absolutely no update at all?? lol

It could be that only computers with discrete graphics getting higher resolutions and the ones using IGB (HD4000) were deemed to not be powerful enough?

Enjoy your new 2012 MacBook Pro folks.

Doesnt say on that label that it is a pro.

The White MacBook was discontinued and none of the Airs have a 1280 screen, Optical Drive or Ethernet port.

I vote true

Look at the past to be your guide.

I have never been blown away by a Apple update to an existing product line. They tend to move very slow in incorporating change. To hear of all the rumored changes supposedly occurring in one instant makes me step back and look at the past updates. I believe Apple is working on these updates, but not for just one massive unavailing.

I tend to think Apple works on updates to their product line behind locked doors that will not see the light of day for years (if at all). Some of these get leaked when a product comes close to updating since the press and blogs are looking for anything sensational to reveal, but they may not be targeted for the closest update. Their timeline may be for the update a year away.

Think about it. If you were to fake the specs to garner attention. Why would you fake mediocre specs? It is way more logical that these are the real specs. Look at past updates. Let them be your guide to the changes Apple makes to it's product line.

Are you expecting a faster computer by upgrading your RAM from 4 to 8GB? If you don't know the function of certain computer parts, why the hell are you upgrading them?

Not sure why everyone is so upset. This would be a solid machine. This is why you shouldn't get too attached to rumors. Sets unrealistic expectations and leads to disappointment with perfectly good updates.

Those specs look to be in line with previous updates in the Macbook Pro line. Not too surprised about the lack of "Retina Display", that could potentially be a pain for gamers and anyone else that uses graphics intensive programs.

Plus is it really needed? It'd be interesting to have but it's not like you have your iMac/MacBook Pro right smack in front of your face while using it. Makes sense on the iOS stuff but a super high resolution doesn't always make sense everywhere else.
