It's interesting that the box has Mac OS X rather than just OS X.

It could mean that it isn't coming pre loaded with mountain lion, as that will be the first OS X to officially drop the 'Mac' from its name.

that's not really very logical now is it. Release a new computer and then within a couple of weeks/a month release an OS update that is likely to cost some kind of money even if just $10. Folks will be livid, even if they do some kind of 'if you bought your computer within the last 2 weeks you can sign up here for a free copy' deal folks will still be upset about having to do the work.

Better to wait until the OS is also ready to launch. But then why isn't it labeled the way Apple has been labeling the system. Between that and the whole 'Ivy Bridge starts at 2.6, not 2.5' stuff one does wonder if this is in fact a fake despite the talk that the same source was 100% on the money last year

I agree with everyone that this is a pretty bogus update. I just don't see how you guys can expect retina display and SSD and Apple to maintain a $1199 price point. I'm sure an improved display will be an option in the 13'' model but for $100-$250.

Why not? They did the very same thing with the early 2011 MacBook Pro release. Indeed, a lot of the boxes just had a sticker with the new specs stuck on until Lion came out when the entire box changed.

Apple moves slow but they also leap.

All lines are in need of updates when it comes to specs, the line in need of a redesign is the pro laptops.

Last major design change was in 2008

something needs to happen.

They've done some great stuff in the past, back lit keyboard, widescreen displays, the macbook air, the large glass trackpad with multi touch gestures, unibody design.

The air was impressive yet somewhat a letdown mostly due to its slow 1.8 inch drive and the price of SSD back then.

But the latest versions with sandy bridge and SSD, "they finally got it right"

I hope that at least the 15" version of the pro gets a redesign with a screen that will dazzle us. The operating system is filled with really high resolution icons, all for nothing? If the 13" model gets the same treatment I'm glad.

Still, it isn't all that unbelievable that the'll keep a macbook pro with the old design as a entry market. I know lots of people that see lack of optical unit as a disadvantage .

This is a great point. Apple was dropping Mac from Mac OS X. I think this is an overlook by the faker.

I believe it is fake.

Calm down, this is just a transition so people can choose the new MBP 15 inch with high res display and thinner design. Think aluminum MacBook along side the White MacBook back in 2008. It gives people a chance to choose for a while before axing the old model completely. They even do this with the iPhone, how is this different? Apple is a creature of habit, i could easily believe this is what they are doing :D

Wonder how many hits that site, no doubt with adverts, is getting now?

There is your reason to 'fake it'.

Yep, that looks like the basic model to me. 1200, sounds right too. They won't drop the price, or it will compete with the air too much.

Also, I agree with everyone who says color rendition and contrast are more important than resolution.

1) Fun to see how people react, particularly with so much hype on the upcoming MBPs.

2) That's what makes 1) even better

You forget 3). Stock manipulation. Both in terms of trying to short Apple and lower the price and perhaps bump places like Intel.

----------

Apple would normally discretely update the line if it were this incremental, surely. I doubt they'd wait 'til WWDC to 'announce' something this small.

That they are going to say anything about any hardware at WWDC is just a rumor. It is more likely they are not and the 90 minutes will be about the software (that is what WWDC is all about). The hardware will be a silently released spec bump perhaps the same week, or a major bump done at an announcement at some other time and place. Might still be next week just not at WWDC. We could see an invite go out in the next day or two to the press for something on next Tuesday at the Campus that would be able the hardware.

FAKE! Here's why:

On any MacBook packaging with this kind of label, the amount of graphics memory is always printed after the graphics card.

Example: Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Yet on this label: Intel HD Graphics 4000

Here is a picture of the label on a 15-inch MacBook Pro Late 2011. It's the fully-upgraded model, but we can use it to compare the leaked label.

1. Nowhere on the current-model label does it say "MacBook Pro"

2. The Intel HD Graphics 3000 spec does not say "with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory" though that might be because this MBP has discrete graphics, too.

3. This 2011 MBP came with Lion preinstalled, but the label says "Preinstalled with Mac OS X and iLife"

Based on this, the leaked label is most likely true. However, it is probably the base model 13-inch. Also, both current 13-inch models cannot be BTO with a high-resolution display, so unless Apple changes that process, the 13-inch will stay at 1280x800. I think the Retina Display will be reserved for the 15-inch MBP.

Stock manipulation? AAPL? the world's second largest company by stock capitalization? a stock that trades 20 million shares per day on average? manipulation off a rumor on a fan-based internet forum? yeah... right... good luck with that...

I'm kinda disappointed. :( Looks like I'll be waiting until next summer/fall to upgrade from my 2007 MacBook. C'mon, MacBook! Hold on for another year!

As pointed out by The Verge, if it's faked, the person who did it took the time to fake the barcode too. Scanning it brings up the number printed above it. That would be one elaborate fake.

Does that number tell you anything? Both the barcode and the number could be an image. Besides, it's not that hard to create a barcode.

Stupid...

This would be incredibly stupid considering they wouldn't even be matching the Macbook Air 11" resolution. This better be fake...

I think the leak can be quite real.

The reason is that, with all the leaks we usually get when apple is about to launch a product, it's hard to believe that, less than a week out,

Bad assumption. We don't know for fact that any hardware is going to be released/talked about next week so you can't really say we are a week out.

IF there is any new hardware being released this summer it might not be until July or August. Could explain why they haven't launched the Back to School promo which had been going live by the end of May for the past couple of years. Perhaps they want to concentrate that promo to just the Month of August and are going to launch the hardware and Mountain Lion to go with it. After the developers have a good month to work with what ever they learn in session at WWDC.

So we aren't 'less than a week out'

Sorry I haven't had time to read through all 500 or so of the responses but...

Doesn't Apple now refer to "OS X" as only "OS X Lion" or "OS X Mountain Lion" and not "Mac OS X" which is listed on this alleged MBP box?

Apple used to call it "Mac OS X" but now it's just "OS X". This leaves me wondering if this spec sheet is fake.

Yeah. Right.

Like this is the "only" Mac laptop that will be for sale after next week.

You can't deny the fact that such a slight speed bump would be a huge disappointment after all... At least I expected more than that. $1100 for a mediocre spec'd laptop with a crappy 1280x800 TN display in the year 2012 is an outrage.
And since I am completely satisfied with SandyBridge's performance, I wouldn't have a single reason to go for the latest model. If this is true, current 15" will be still more powerful than this new 13". And won't be any more expensive after discounts the local APRs usually give after the release of the new generation.

Again, I PRAY for this being a fake.

To the people saying they'll switch to ASUS or HP

lololol...olol....ololololol.

Right.

As for the "leak". I'm not sure. Other's have had good reasons why it could be fake. Then again it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Apple barely updated the base 13 in favor of keeping it cheap or as an education machine with the ability to upgrade up.

However, it does seem disappointing.

You're right, my MBP 2011 box says OS X on it, and i bought it a month after the release of lion. Could be fake, but if its a fake, its pretty darn close in my opinion to what Apple should be doing with the 13 inch MBP.
