I agree that retina displays are not coming out now. I don't think OS X is ready for HiDPI mode and it's certain that third party apps are not ready. In fact if retina displays came out now I'd wait a while until software catches up. Non-retina assets will look terrible on a retina display.

Correct:

1 - OS X is NOT ready for large retina displays;

2 - Large retina displays are NOT available in an industrial scale/competitive prices;

3 - Macs sporting large retina displays are ONLY coming by mid-2013.

There are going to be a lot of pissed off people, and then sales will increase and the stock will run over $600 a share. It's the way it works.

Even if Retina display is a BTO option, it doesn't explain the other disappointing specs:

- Why keep the superdrive?
- Why keep the same form factor and weight? It's only 0.8 lbs less than my 15" Powerbook G4 from 2005!

Other things of note are rather than saying just Intel HD Graphics 4000. on the 2011 box it says Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory.

They can't post on it is that the amount of RAM is various amount depending on amount of RAM DDR3 you have installed in your Mac. 384 MB is when you have 4 GB of memory, 512 MB when you have 8 GB.

It's a little confusing then.

Because making it thinner it would cause Apple to push to ULV Processors, that are base of the Air, and rest of Ultrabooks. And Pro is NOT an Ultrabook.

They will likely release the hardware and then offer discount on upgrades to MLion. Microsoft did when windows 7 was coming out.

I mean you can still release the hardware and then release the OS later down the road.

I really don't understand how people can be so stubborn...look at this picture from 2011:

Image

Exactly the same wording back then is used in this case...the reference to "OS X" will probably apply to ML and beyond, NOT Lion as currently offered.

Give it up, people: the rumor reflects REALITY as much as the fact that Elvis is dead. No fantasies here.

Am I the only one that is still using a Santa Rosa MBP and has absolutely no need to upgrade yet?..... with the exception of the sides of my bezel cracking which Apple KNOWS is a common problem but chooses to do nothing...

Anyway, the picture being real wouldn't surprise me even in the lightest bit. Apple will eventually end their computer line. It's all iDevices now, and everyone knows it. The Mac will die either because Apple intentionally chooses to kill it, or because consumers are getting tired of paying double/triple the price for computers with specifications as low as $400 PC's. I personally know 3 die-hard Mac users that in just the last year and a half switched back to PC when needing to buy new computers.

1) Debatable; both Lion and Mountain Lion have HiDPI mode in it, and the scaling of images too.

2) 'large' Retina displays are already in mass production.

3) Can't say anything on that, only Apple know.

I feel like this could end up to be not fake, however, still aligned with the rumors;

Given the 13 Inch is already "thin", in order to be as cheaply made for the masses - who wouldn't mind to keep the ODD, it makes sense that the basic 13 Inch won't come with Retina and won't be thinner thus leaving room for the ODD. Also, 500GB HDD makes a lot of sense since it's much cheaper than SSD + HDD combination. Folks, keep in mind - the 13 Inch is the best-seller of the macbook-pro line of Apple, they need to keep selling them the masses and they want a good profit margin, thus keeping most of the features which have been so far.
There might be an option for a retina display with a premium, however I doubt about that.

The 15 Inch, on the other hand, has a lot more room for changes - Apple understands that it would be nice to make it thinner by losing the ODD, and giving us Retina display - don't forget, this machine comes with a price tag of probably 1800$ which makes a lot of sense to make the hard-core big changes like the Retina & lighter machice - in this premium machine, by its definition.

So to sum up: for all of you that wanted 13 Inch thinner and with a better display, it might be a disappointment if this turns out to be true. For those of us who want the 15 Inch to be thinner and with a retina display can keep their hopes up.

Nothing new about that. Apple offered a free upgrade to lion for all macs purchased after a certain date before it came out.

The interesting thing is that lion already had hi-res icons and so forth last year. The plans for higher resolution are definitely there.

If this is true, I will be doubly disappointed. It is likely that the new MacBook models will have retina, according to a bunch of other news/rumors.

That's a bummer, was really hoping for retina display:(

If the 15" has retina, I'll probably end up upgrading

Even if the 13" MacBook Pro will be a transitionary product while the 15" gets the thinner design and Retina display, it still irks me they stuck with 1280x800... again. It was ridiculous the last time they updated it. The 13" MacBook Air already had 1440x900 at the time. To do that again is just pathetic.

You do realise if you buy a custom order mac that sticker changes to whatever specs you have ordered so if somebody ordered 8GB of RAM from Apple it could very well say 512MB on shared with the video card.

They aren't bothered if you add in RAM after, the specs on the sticker are for the specs it originally came with.

I just played with effects in Photoshop in hope of proving this was shopped. Unfortunately, it looks very real and some details like the fact that the label SKU (bottom right) and weight (2.06kg instead of 2.04kg) are slightly different make it look real :(.

I'd like to be proved this is an elaborate fake, but it's not looking good. Perhaps Apple would release only a redesigned 15" and keep the current 13" for a generation until the 13" MBA finally replaces it, kind of like the white MacBook that they kept alongside the Aluminium MacBook introduced in 2008.

It wouldn’t take much to make a document and copy a barcode and statement from the current MBP from Apples documents. Reprint it and take a photo with your phone.So it could be faked.

Recalling when the 17" and 13" PBs were announced, Apple did not refresh the 15" with the new AL case. So it's at least possible that the 15" would get a new slimmer optical drive-less case first, and the 13" would follow with a late fall refresh. The 13" is the best selling Mac so arguably updating it is less urgent.

I hope these specs are true and they have not eliminated the optical drive and ethernet port. In a "Pro" model they should actually add a blu-ray burner instead of taking out the DVD. Having to carry (and buy) dongles and external drives is not fun.
The 13" Macbook Pro is the perfect size IMHO, if I wanted a thinner model I'd buy an Air...
I was actually thinking of going back to Windows if they went that route... Now I'll change my (still functional) Late 2006 Macbook for this :)

The 13" always gets screwed. The 15" will be drastically better though. May I remind everyone of all the rumors from more reliable sources:

More Reports of NVIDIA Graphics Chips in Next-Generation MacBook Pro
ABC News specifically claims that Apple will be using NVIDIA graphics chips in the new MacBook Pro reportedly set for introduction at next month's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple to Release Thinner MacBook Pro at WWDC
Bloomberg confirms a report from earlier today that Apple is preparing to release thinner MacBook Pro models with Retina displays.

It wouldn’t take much to make a document and copy a barcode and statement from the current MBP from Apples documents. Reprint it and take a photo with your phone.So it could be faked.

But why make a fake of something so disappointing? Wouldn't it be more exciting to make a fake of something utterly fantastic?

Makes every sense that retina isnt there. We dont need it on laptops because the distance from screen is much bigger than ipad or iphone.

And also with integrate graphics it is very possible retina is exclusive to mbps with dedicated GPU

IMO 13mbp shouldnt be called a pro at all. No quadcore, no dedicated gpu.
