if this is real *salt*
i would of like to see a blu-ray drive put into the macs,
i think apple should go to the next stage with their drives.

only a few more days to wait

You look at this in theory; One foot, two foot - that's theory; the fact is that when I use the MBP especially on the 13 MBP the text is blurry, most notably while using Safari and on the OS X menus. This is a fact, not theory. This can and will be fixed on Retina displays. You shouldn't think about this things with a meter in your hand - just use your eyes - for me there is plenty of room for improvement with the entrance of Retina displays.

What? Apple's initial talk about the Retina displayed talked about the distance from the eye to the screen. If anything, yours is a theory because you aren't using any thing standard ("oh I FEEL like this looks better"). I'm not saying that a Retina display wouldn't make things better (it would), but there is absolutely no reason to double the display if it has little notable difference from a display that is just simply upgraded.

I don't mean to be rude/naive, but surely *any* new model will be a 'major update' to a 7 year old G4?

Honestly don't mean that to be offensive, just don't quite get where you are coming from unless you're not being serious?

DAMN! You have had that computer almost as long as most marriages last... Congrats!

But anyway, ANY current MBP model WILL be a major update (in your case) :p

Not so much. I was not too impressed in 2006 when they introduced the Macbook Pro. I was not so impressed either in 2008 when they introduced the unibody. Why? Because my Aluminum Powerbook is very similar to the current 15" Macbook Pro in terms of form factor, weight, and size. The unibody update was really the only update that changed the look...a little. I still get comments about how good my computer looks. In many ways, it looks even better and newer than the Macbook Pro with its aluminum keys, aluminum bezel, and matte screen.

I need a REAL update in order to make the jump.

I'm not convinced you even know what i was arguing - There is no OPTICAL output socket on the MBP (at least mine). I didn't say it cannot output digital audio ... -.-

Wow. Just wow. The audio ouput port on the 2012 MBP will be exactly the same as before and be capable of the exact same things as before. This isn't a tricky thing to understand.

Well for one, you're talking aesthetics.... those are just complete opinions.

Going into the facts... Yeah you're still running powerpc... I mean i noticed a lot of gains switching from 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo to a 2.4GHz Core i5. I really don't think you would be disappointed upgrading to the current line-up.

And you want to be different? Get decals for your MacBook, get a cover/shell, or get the cover laser-etched with a cool design (I had a friend who did that and it looked amazing). Its all up to you though...

How can you possibly know that? ALL i was initially pointing out is that it specifically mentions OPTiCAL - that's a new one...

Retina Could Be An Option

The current 15" MBP has the option for a higher res screen. Perhaps the retina screen could be an option at a higher price point since previous articles mentioned about a $100 cost increase for Apple for retina screens on a MBP.

The inclusion of the superdrive seems surprising though, since I would have totally expected them to get rid of it, if this is indeed real.

I think that it should be combined - better display quality AND bumping up to Retina, but my guess is that by upgrading to Retina, they will use a better quality displays.

as i see it:

1)the MBP line will remain as today, just spec bumped. those are the powerful and versatile machines.
2)a new 15" mba will come, completing the range of thin, light, ODD-less laptops.

everyone's happy.
my job is done here.

edit. anyway expect high def (so called retina) display to come with a price, just as a bto.

I also agree with this. Steve said the Macbook Air is the future. Its only a matter of time before you get the power of the Pro in the form factor of the Air.

Are the current MacBook Pro's are not exactly 'thick'. How much thinner can they get without sacrificing performance? In the future the Air form factor will be the only Macbook form factor.

Look at it this way, the current Macbook Pro's almost qualify for Intel's Ultrabook spec. If it was 3mm thinner it would qualify for a ultrabook with the 15 inch model.

That is only 3mm! The form factor is good as it is. Nothing wrong with it. Improve the screen and you're good to go.

As long as they keep ethernet, all the rest is just bonus. We use MacBook Pros at work and dropping ethernet means they are not an option for business anymore.

Well, the same source just claimed to have posted the 15" specs, but listed Sandybridge configurations.

I think that can add a bit of ******** to the mix for his first 13" leak.
