I was waiting for macbook pro but this is just too ugly, it is so thick as we would go back 15 years in past. And that notch, what the heck went wrong with Apple designers? It is not only ugly but it is much less ergonomic than its predecessor.

I have M1, I was thinking to switch to macbook pro, but with this case it will never happen. I hope they will make thinner Air in 2022. Maybe then, but if they keep notch in Air I'll also skip it and stay with M1 for couple of years until they fix their design.

its impossible not to have blooming in the night with 1000nits display brightness turned on
Nobody is using that way a display...your eyes will get some pain after hours
Is that a fact? Interesting…. I guess I’ve been doing it wrong all these years. Who knew!? Thanks for the sage advice!

If it was an OLED display, you could absolutely have that high contrast & brightness with no blooming. Have you actually seen all those square ’dimming zone’ blooming regions on the iPad Pro? They’re really terrible and for certain media tasks, need to be disabled entirely.

Cannot figure out for the life of me if it lets you go up to 1,000 nits when you’re not viewing HDR content, or if it’s limited to 600 like the iPad Pro is. That would be a really big deal to me if you can go up to 1,000 nits all the time.

They also say 1,000,000,000 colors so then it has to be a true 10-bit color display, right? But they don’t advertise 10-bit color anywhere.

Ugh I wish they were more forthcoming

As much as I hate the STUPID notch, I have to give it to Apple for having the BALLS to do this.

It makes their laptop ultra-recognizable.

So now we have the iPhone notch, the MacBook Pro notch, and the iMac chin.

Problem is, it makes them recognizable to laugh at in derision.

THANK GOD they didn't go that route with the iPads (yet).

Promotion is a potential game-changer when it comes to emulation. Being able to run retro-arcade games at their original frame-rate (without an old school CRT-display) would be just wow.

If only the Mac emulation scene was as strong as on x86 PC.

Dell could do it, surely Apple can too.

Perhaps not with the webcam quality they were after. The Dell XPS's webcams are quite crappy, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

There may be also a secondary motivation to eventually bring Face ID to the Mac once they think they can cram it in a thiner display and reduce the cost enough to generalise it throughout the lineup (I'm expecting that design to be carried over to the current 13" MBP lineup in 1-2 years with some cost cutting such as fewer ports / "plain" M2 chip, etc., as seems to be the case with Apple's modus operandi since they split the 13" MBP lineup in two).

Given that it's a bonus over the usual 16:10 aspect ratio, I'm mostly fine with it personally as long as apps start to take it into account and avoid crowding the menu bar.

On the iPhone the excuse for the notch is Face ID, on the macbook?

Apple has an obsession with notches.

... The only thing I wished was a baby XDR display at reasonable price. Bummer.

Me too. Please Apple. We want this "baby XDR"-Display so badly.
Any new Apple display really. You could even just repackage the 24-inch iMac one, and sell it to us for $999...

(I ordered the 14-inch, M1 Pro, 1TB, 32GB)

I will never understand the huge reaction to using all of the screen real estate by filling the area on either side of the camera with screen... notch. that area up top will be mostly menus. Why would anyone prefer either less screen real estate or a taller lid due to more bezel?

Fair. But I still think they could have done more to avoid it. They still have a chin, so they could have matched that to give the camera a little more room at the top. It's also weird that they have squared bottom corners but rounded top corners. There's just a lot going on with this display.

seems like apple will hide the notch in full screen apps. its a beautiful machine but still prefer the old design of 16inch macbook. in marketing images the notch is really painful to look at. btw the image is from apple macbook pro website

I agree. In dimmed or high contrast images, the blooming is just awful and makes balancing images, etc. difficult.
I wonder if it is possible to disable local variation of the mini-LEDs, essentially running as a uniform backlight. This would reduced the contrast ratio spec, but it might be useful for people doing critical image editing. Could be a system setting, an app-level setting (if Apple provided an API for it). Or maybe a third-party hack.

This display was the biggest reason I wanted to upgrade to a iPad Pro with M1 but with the display in this beast. I will be getting this beast now.

I'm ok with the notch if and when it get's Face ID. But it does mean the now have a unified apple device trademark (except on watches) - YES! It Comes with a Apple Notch - Buy now! :D

The product page for the new MBP shows macOS Monterey in the list of features. Does that mean that these will ship with Monterey installed? I don't recall any mention of that in the event video. And I don't recall any mention of a release date for Monterey (maybe I missed it).
