Only 15.5mm - 16.8mm "thin", apparently.

Not worried about the thickness, just feel like I have been marketed by the way they expressed it.

I'm still stunned on the notch. I really am. But I think I'm ok with it. Yikes.
I'm fine with it. I say that having not used a machine with one on a daily basis so my opinion may change. But, I think it was an unnecessary design compromise they made in order to keep even-less-than-necessary design compromises.

I think it's best to stop thinking of it as having a notch and think of it as having two menu eyebrows.

Gosh dang that is ugly. They're about 8-10 years behind everyone else.

This is a Pro machine with amazing performance. Try to find a thinner and better looking machine with that kind of power.

They finally made a non-compromise Pro machine deserving of the name.

Consumers will likely be happier with the next Air.

Why would anyone have an issue with the notch when it is so clearly integrated as part of the menubar system? Looks like good use of otherwise dead space? Unless these people out there have engineered ways to get around the fundamental engineering and physics issues no-one else can?

Now, the fact that the prices keep creeping up – and as a user in Australia I still pay the "far-far away" tax – is a bummer. But no different than ever really. In fact, the M1s have already spoiled us all in reality. Now I have to think about deluding myself that I need a Pro-level machine for my work; the same as 90% of the people that will buy these!

Nice job Apple. Killed the PC industry a little more and then kicked the PC laptop corpse. :)
The iPhone 12 notch is less than 2mm taller than the newly-thin bezels on the MacBooks, and It takes 1080p video as well and has even more sensors. I totally understand the argument for increased screen real estate, but isn't there a point of diminishing returns? At just 1.8mm, I really have to wonder why they didn't just make the top boarder uniform. It's just a handful of pixels...

No but a bigger more usable screen does. You can still watch 16:9 content without it interfering. You only loose a bit of a the menu bar. Curious how apps with lots of menus handle this.
Spoiler alert: poorly.
I don’t understand why everyone is praising this. This is ridiculous. I thought Jony Ive was bad but apparently we’ve gone from bad to worse.

Let the mental gymnastics begin.

Exactly. I was wondering, "what about fullscreen videos," then I remembered they're all 16:9 and this monitor is probably 16:10.

I haven't done macOS app dev in forever, but I think apps use an API that just specifies the ordering of the menu items, so the OS will know how to skip over the notch on its own. It's not like the app draw the menu items itself.

Don’t mind is as much but I’m wondering why it is that wide. Even true tone sensors, etc don’t take that much space.

Doesn't bother me but I am confused at why the display needs a notch and the iPad Pro, Air and mini do not and arguably have a better camera system.
This. The screen borders are so close to all the iPads who got FaceID and are notchless.
iPad sales will once again rise, smart play. :|
