For the love of God dude there’s gotta be at least one person on their design team who thinks this looks absolutely horrific. Their design team is terrible. How somebody at Apple or even multiple people allowed the notch to make it over to the Mac so unnecessarily needs to be fired immediately. I just can’t comprehend why they decided to do this.

I'm legit surprised how ugly this is. The notch looks weird (and for some reason there's no FaceID) and the lower half of the laptop is... frumpy? It's shaped like the pre-Retina Pros, and I'm not liking the all-black keyboard either.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still probably end up buying one, but I'm amazed how downright un-slick it looks.

What a bunch of moaners. You get more screen real estate, people! And the notch disappears when apps are in fullscreen mode anyway. I don’t see the problem with this.

And for those with a weird, OCD style aversion to this, I absolutely guarantee that someone will engineer a way to remove it entirely and switch off those pixels altogether. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if there was an option built into the OS itself to alter the resolution to ignore it.

This! Agree I wouldn’t notice the notch, but no FaceID and a notch?

I hope the next iPad Pro doesn’t have a notch…
You will keep noticing it because we use the menu bar. On iOS we wont use a menu bar.

Solutions. Black wallpaper and hope no apps have too many menu bar items.

I suspect this is going in the same direction as the iPhone 5, then the 5s. iPhone 5 used the traditional passcode for authentication, then the 5s added Touch ID, while it was merely a "s" upgrade from the 5. I would be surprised if the next MBP does not have Face ID. The iPhone 5 was a big upgrade - new lightening port, size, and enclosure... not dissimilar to the new MBPs.

I also suspect this will be seen in the next generation Airs - it'll be the "5c" (Touch ID only), but eventually, even the "c" versions will get Face ID.
Waiting another year for the upgrade then. The 2013 MBP is still kicking, so not a huge deal.

The size of this notch seems like it is a foretelling of future FaceID on the MBP’s, because there is no way they need that much room for the camera sensor as is. And for all those people complaining about how the notch will destroy the menu bar on some app, I’m pretty sure app developers will update menu bar coding to take the notch into account.

The thing that throws me off on these new MBP’s isn’t the notch, it’s the overall design that looks far less modern in my opinion than products like the iPad Pro (which I love and use as my daily work driver). I guess it makes sense given how the iPhone 12 and 13 are inspired from iPhone designs from the past (4 & 5). Apple really seems to be going back to right a bunch of wrongs from the Jony Ive days of the thinner the better.

There is one benefit.

Maybe this is why Apple did it.

People will stop putting webcam covers and blue tape on their notch that makes them crack their screen LOL

The notch makes me so mad. There's clearly enough room to not have that impinge on the screen, just use a little bigger top margin. No one cares the margin size, except people in apple obsessed with "edge to edge everything"
I guarantee you there will be an app that puts a black bar there - and you can use it.

This. The screen borders are so close to all the iPads who got FaceID and are notchless.
iPad sales will once again rise, smart play. :|
The iPad case has flat sides so the camera can be closer to the edge. The MacBook lids have rounded edges which means the camera has to be inset more from the edge.

so I guess your not supposed to watch anything fullscreen. damn that was a bad design choice for a laptop. on a phone due to bezel restrictions I can understand... but a notch on a laptop? come on, you are better than this apple
If you were watching fullscreen on previous models, you already had black bars at the top and bottom for 16:9 content. If you expanded the video to crop the sides, you got 16:10, which is the ratio of the screen area below the notch now.

Based on their presentation, default fullscreen excludes the menu/notch area, probably with the ability for developers to use the additional space if they want to by designing around the notch).

So, basically, this won't change anything.

Next thing you know they’ll be putting a notch in the goddamn Apple logo! (Oh wait…)

The horror! The Menubar is 7 millimeters higher and has a notch in it while the screen size is increased. Toolbars are still uninterrupted. The display is remarkable. The machines are virtually silent and fast as hell. Get over it people.

We don’t know yet if all the menu items are uninterrupted. If you use lower resolution scaled settings many apps will have menu items that cover the whole bar or almost.

The new design is slightly odd in that it's neither curvy nor a square design. Looks like a first draft rather than the final product. The feet also don't seem to match the new design.
