No Blu-ray ever then for Apple?
I guess Apple does not like Blu-ray that much.
Tallest Skil, I really like reading your replies.
I agree that I don't think we'll see Blu-Ray in the MacBook Pros, but I don't think it's a policy decision from Apple. I think they do support Blu-Ray.
- Member of the BDA (means something. They could have staid neutral)
- Disney supports Blu-Ray, so Steve has some interest in promoting it
- HD Movie purchases from the PC store aren't offered in iTunes (movies are largely used for transfers to iPod/Phone, which doesn't compete with BD)
- Blu-Ray movies are beginning to come with digital copies
- Apple doesn't make much money from the iTunes store. Most of the purchase price goes to content providers.
Given all of that, I don't see much reason Apple should have a policy against Blu-Ray.
- Mac OS X doesn't support HDCP
- DVD Player.app doesn't support Blu-Ray
- Mac OS X doesn't come with all the required codecs (e.g. VC-1) for Blu-Ray discs
- Blu-Ray discs haven't gained significant market traction, and are especially fringe in portable scenarios
- Blu-Ray would add to the cost of the device
- Blu-Ray would probably add to the minimum size of the device
Given all of that, I don't see a reason for Apple to be particularly supportive of Blu-Ray for the MacBook Pros. With both sets of arguments, I'd imagine the idea of BD in the MBP is sort of negative - it doesn't bring anything exciting to the table, is unlikely to be used much, and would add to the size of the device. It's not a policy decision, because as I concluded above, they have nothing against Blu-Ray as a platform. It just doesn't fit for the MBP right now.
Whilst they write new x64 drivers for Snow Leopard, HDCP support will probably be added to OSX, and we may see an option announced for the Mac Pro. Once drives slim down, and if Blu-Ray gets enough market support, an option may be added to the MacBook Pro in about a year. But then, you could probably retrofit a drive in your current model. It doesn't make sense yet, because the software isn't there.
