I joined just now to take part in this discussion. Based on reading SEVERAL forums in a myriad of languages (thank you Google translator,) I've compiled what I believe to be a decent estimate on the MBPs.
Certainties
- 2.5-2.6ghz Penryn (obvious) and at the same 3 tier price points.
-Multi-Touch Pad
Probabilities
-Most likely "spaced" or "macbook air" style keys, redesigned to streamline with the pro look.
-Shipping with OS X 10.5.2
-New GPU (Nvidia 8800 of sorts or the ATI HD)
-February 12th announcement
-Magnetic latch
Unlikely but hopeful...
-Higher resolution available on 15 inch models
Completely unlikely suggestions
-SSD drive option on at least the 15" models
-Major case redesign
Okay, now for my opinions... I feel the MBPs will NOT cut into MBA sales for several reasons. The power difference is too huge, they are designed for two totallly seperate markets, and any consumer who is unsure of their decision between the two would surely choose a regular macbook. Also, we're all ticked about the iPhones/iTouches, no need explaining. However, of all the dates, February 12th seems the most logical for several reasons. Any longer than that and it would cut into the decent gap between a Penryn and Montevina (more major) update. I am partial to getting one soon, but not soon enough to get a current MBP. Those who can't stand waiting, if it doesn't come out on the 12th and you NEED it, go for a current one from eBay or a discounted reseller. to clear any confusion for people who don;t want to read 18 pages...Montevina is a major release as the size of the mobile architecture will allow for a case redesign, while the Penryn uses the same logic board as the current processors. the performance difference between the current models will range from a 5-10% increase, though programs coded for the new upgraded penryns (SSE4 format) will see more than a 200% boost. This boost mostly applies to video editing software.
