Intel isn't expecting Light Peak to be ready till later this year.

Why would Apple release a laptop that supports LP when there are no LP devices?

So even if they DID include LP what would you use it on? USB 3.0 has been out for about a year and there are still very few USB 3.0 devices.

Because Light Peak is the egg.:D

I've got a MBP 13" Mid 2010 right now. I'm wondering if I should sell my current MBP and get a new 13" one. Do you guys think that the lower entry level 13" MBP's will have Sandy Bridge CPU's?

It might depend on what your using your MBP for. Me for instance, will be using the MBP for audio. I have read that C2D's beat the pants of of i3's for audio work. So if the low end 13" new MBP has an i3, I personally would be better off with a C2D. I'll save myself some cash too. I hope the low enders at least have an i5. That's not too much to ask... is it?

Hmm... don't understand. Perhaps you can explain in layman's term?

BTW, paying for a flawed part that comes with a product seems err... Well unless they publicly state that they are using it and are giving discounts for this.

The old Cougar Point chipset has two SATA 3 ports, which are perfectly fine, and four SATA 2 ports, of which ~15% are predicted to fail over the next 3 years, under a heavy workload. Therefore, any manufacturer that wasn't planning on using the SATA 2 ports is completely unaffected.

If Apple only uses two out of HDD, SSD & ODD as they are doing at the moment, the flawed boards will not pose a problem. If Apple uses more than 2, they will upgrade the boards, or implement an extended warranty at the very least.

Basically, Intel have said: "If you've already bought one and you want the SATA 2 ports, you can replace it free of charge. If it doesn't bother you, you can still buy them. If it does bother you, fixed ones will be available soon." So whatever Apple decides to do, they have plenty of good options.

If they remove it I may have to reconsider my purchase. I need to be able to burn discs wherever I may be and carrying a external around kind of defeats the purpose of having a pro-level portable.

Maybe it's time you reconsider your workflow instead.

As a photographer, many of my clients originally requested a hard copy of their photos at the end of the gig so I naturally had to burn a disk for them on site. Since I started considering getting a MacBookAir to improve the portability of my setup, I had to begin phasing out disks.

I now offer my clients to download the photos from my site or if they insist on getting a hard copy, I have a bunch of cheap 2GB usb sticks in my photo bag.

Unless you're burning video DVDs on site for a client, I don't see a disk being the only solution... and these days, most TVs/DVD players have USB ports anyway.

So if the new MacBookPro is comparatively portable to the Air because they're removing the optical drive, I might just get a new MBP instead of the Macbook Air.

WOHOOOOOO

Just what i wanted. A made in china laptop with same specs ( in some cases, worst specs) as a DELL, SONY or HP model and all this for 300 $$ more.

Thanks APPLE !!!!

They're designed in the USA by people that know what they're doing.

Who cares where it's made? I sure as hell don't.

This is my concern. Say I get the new one that comes out on Thursday with these flawed chips...My MBP won't get messed up or break down or anything right? I've saved up for a little over a year waiting to switch to a MBP and don't want to buy something that could mess up.

Intel have already said they will be pouring around a billion dollars into turning this issue into a non-issue.

ie, don't worry about it.

My computer came with the flawed 8600M GT graphics chip, which NVIDIA screwed around with, trying to dodge the blame. It was still a simple task for me to go into an Apple store, hand it in, and pick it up a week later with a new motherboard, free of charge. If there are problems with the new MBPs, I expect the process to be even simpler.

But there won't be problems, as any MBP that could be affected by the SATA 2 fault will have a fixed board in it.

If Apple only uses two out of HDD, SSD & ODD as they are doing at the moment, the flawed boards will not pose a problem. If Apple uses more than 2, they will upgrade the boards, or implement an extended warranty at the very least.

So basically all the MBP's use 2 ports and won't be affected?

Actually, many companies already do. Take into account that I am switching from PC to Mac with this Macbook Pro release. But you just cant argue that PC's (both portable and desktop) dont offer more power for the price. With apple you are getting different things for the money. (superior build quality, OSX, great set of included software, etc)

For example:

ASUS G Series G53JW-XN1
Intel i7 740QM (Quad Core)
4GB 1333 DDR3
500GB 7200rpm HD
Nvidia 1.5GB GTX 460M
15.6" LED 1920x1080 display
USB 3.0
USB 2.0
Backlit Keyboard
1 year accidental damage warraty

$1,199.99

I don't see this being more power for the price. That thing is almost twice the size and weight of the MBP. The hardware inside the laptop is not so expensive, the form factor is. Its not easy and not cheap to build a thin, light laptop with decent performance. So far, Apple's offerings provide the best tradeoff between power and portability. PC laptops may have more raw power for lower price, but they are not as mobile. And having to carry my laptop around all the time, I am happy about every gram of reduced weight.

Don't raise your expectation too high... seriously.

Redesign + spec bump + lightpeak + odd drop

...not going to happen all in once.

agreed. People ALWAYS do this - they get their expectations unrealistically high and then are mad/disappointed when it's a modest update.

Yeah and since features like magsafe, thin aluminium unibody falls from the sky I don't know why DELL, SONY AND HP hasn't photocopied it into their laptops for free yet, the mind boggles.

I feel as if this years hype is not as wild as last years waiting for Arrandale threads. Which ended up with tons of scorned people because nothing but the processor changed. I'm still debating on selling mine , if it's a huge difference I want the new ones and I should probably sell last years now or else I'll lose money selling it after release.

Wow people. It won't be anything more than a spec jump to sandy bridge. No massive redesign, no light peak.

Light peak is coming, but Apple will announce it when it can simultaneously announce peripherals for it. BTW - it won't be called light peak, because initially it won't be optical. But it will still be plenty fast enough.

I won't switch unless and until it can support FW target disk mode style of operation. Man is that useful. Myself, I'm a huge fan of FW, and would love to see the adoption of FW1600 or 3200, but since THAT is not going to happen, I'll just hang on as long as I can...

:D

It's funny to see USB3 more or less DOA. Even the PC junkies I know no longer have it on their radar...

I'm ready to upgrade when they're released. I just hope the 13" Macbook Pro FINALLY has the matte option, too. I have no interest in staring at a mirror while trying to work. Even my iPhone has a nonglare slip on it.

It is without question more power for the price. Other than that I already agreed with you.

I stated already that there are obvious trade-offs for more power @ a cheaper price, which are the same ones you just listed. Bulky/Ugly, poor battery life, Heavy, etc.

Unless if apple drops the DVD drive in the 13inch. For room for a gpu. Then Leaves the DVD drive in the 15-17inch. For idiots who still think they need it.

As in, idiots = people who use a DVD drive?

Really?

Am I an idiot for using my drive to burn data discs every week? Am I an idiot for using my laptop to watch my DVD movies, since I don't own a TV? Am I an idiot for using it to burn mix CDs, or to review submitted student work?

Step out of your bubble.

New Macbook Pros... new cpus, sandy bridge + ssd + extra usb port

nothing else being updated...

LION update will have light peak + black new aluminum. :apple:

Agreed

I hope the pricing changes a bit.

My biggest gripe right now is that for those of us that are very budget-minded, the base-line 13" is the only real option.

Coming from a PC, these are the things that piss me off apple:

1. We need a 14" or 15" model in an affordable price range. $1800 for a base 15" MBP vs $600 for a PC version makes this very tough to swallow. I'm willing to pay some premium for an apple tax, but this is just painful.

2. The upgraded 13" is too expensive. I'm going to be really pissed if the options are:

$1200 - 13", i3, w/ no SSD
$1500 - 13", i5, w/ SSD

I'd almost wager that this is exactly what we'll end up getting.

Basically, I've pretty much decided that the only way I make the switch at this refresh is if I see a machine with the following specs:

MBP 13-14"
i5 sandybridge
128gb SSD
4gb ram
a reasonable video card that can power dual monitors
$1200

Give me that, apple, and I'll convert.

I agree! I've been a Mac user for over 20 years and I have owned a dozen Macs. When I wanted a 15" laptop, I bought a Compaq laptop. Why? It is cheaper and I'm just fine with Windows 7.

It's Apple's loss to have their Apple tax at such a rate as they do.

Keep an eye out for refurbs!

By the way, the build quality of a cheap PC is cheap. Even the $800 PC laptops are pretty awful, in my opinion. I say this as I use a $350 PC laptop. Those "cheap" PC ain't that great and for that money I'd get a MacBook.

Well unless you do a lot of transferring data from a camera or from an external RAID There isn't a whole lot to gain from faster than FW800/USB2 ports at the moment.

I love how people are screaming for lack of 3.0 ports, and LP, but really what will they use it for? Most people are just transferring data to and from a phone via USB, or from a point and shoot camera, or just plugging in a flash drive or keyboard/mouse. Only high end professionals that shoot in HD, or use a lot of external storage in a performance RAID will see any real difference. That's not a whole lot of people, and in many cases those people will be using desktops, not laptops.

I honestly have no need for LP, but I would like the current USB port transfered to 3.0 ports, the FW port updated to 1600/3200, and an eSATA port added. Technically the eSATA can double as a powered USB 3.0 port so that will actually save a little space if you provide one USB3.0 port and one eSATA/USB port. That way I get a nice port upgrade and the setup on the side of the macbook will change very little.

Unless they enable LP to be able to be utilized by many devices at once I dont see what the point of it will really be. Unless I can hook my external display, and my external storage and input devices on it at one time. What good is it? and even if I could.. What would that cable that allows all those connections look like? it would take up just as much space as whats on the side of your MacBook now.
