Sounds like you haven't read the article yourself, just the headline. The new MBP supports all the different types of USB C peripherals.

Sounds like you are making assumptions.
Have YOU read the article?

The MPB may well support all of the standards but the cables and peripherals are not all the same and the outcome of using the wrong cable vary from just not working to working in a crippled manner.
I am not criticising the MBP. Calm down.

I'm calm. I swear haha...truth be told I don't plug much into my laptop as is, so the new MBP's lack of existing ports won't be an issue. I'll buy a one for all adapter for the times I do need to plug stuff in like USB A or HDMI and after this article I'll pay attention to the specs of the adapter before I buy.

I feel like you're wanting to argue with me for some reason, and I don't really want to do that. But I'll say that having multiple 5k displays doesn't mean anything when you're not at your desk with your multiple 5k displays. And I'd be perfectly happy with a 15" if I wasn't forced to use dongles and hubs while I'm traveling between film sets.

That's what this person does. Just ignore them.

Red Rocket in a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure, up to 4 drives at a time (5k digital footage is ungodly large), Wacom tablet, etc. I will use every single port I am given. Apple used to make machines that catered to this kind of need, but they don't anymore. I'm not saying that's a bad thing for the average user. I'm just saying that they won't work for my purposes (or people like me) anymore. By all means, buy a new MBP if you want one.

i don't get it.. to me, it seems you're being entirely over dramatic about dongles.. the real inconvenience is that youre carrying around a bunch of other hardware..

like, traveling with a 4drive enclosure and a tablet isn't an inconvenience, but, carrying the adapters for the plugs are ?!?

say what?

if the adapter is such an extra hassle for you, why not get a dedicated plug that doesn't require an additional 6" adapter at the end?

----
idk, what you're outlying is a great example of why there should be only one style port/wire.. it's pretty dumb to need a usb cable for this component and a thunderbolt plug for that component and a dvi cable for this and a miniphone for that etcetc..

if you have all this different crap that constantly needs plugged in and reconfigured and traveled with, i think you'd be much better off if you only need one style cable that works with everything.. actually, i know you would.

With all the bad news has come out as of late, how can one not be disappointed?

All the bad news? Does the display not work? Is the keyboard non-functional?

This is really the only bad news about the Laptop since it's announcement. Everything is just people complaining Apple stripped the SD card reader out, or they have to buy a dongle to use their older devices. Shocking. They also removed the DVD drive. And the FW800 ports. Apple moves forward faster than the 3rd party peripherals. Always has. Always will. After a few months, you'll be able to buy drives and devices with USB-C and TB3 connections.

Yeah its ridiculous that you need a usb-c to thunderbolt 2 adapter then a thunderbolt 2 to gigabit ethernet to properly be able to use ethernet on this laptop!
When you configure it online in their e-commerce store, Apple suggests this:
Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

The keyboard is crap, but yeah the display is gorgeous.

I think the issue is that people waited so long for a major update, that we only got the typical updates (new chipset, thinner notebook) and one significant update, the touch bar. I think many people were hoping for more.

I wonder how many of the commenters in these recent threads are shills for Apple?

I mean, the responses are becoming so predictable. If there is a defect in the design or manufacture of an Apple product, it's either:

1. The customer's fault
2. The customer is wrong because they are too tight to buy an expensive fix
3. The vendors making products to spec are "windows centric" or some other derogatory reference
4. Apple is ahead of its time and doesn't need to think about any other company's products

Don't get me wrong. Apple have made great stuff, some of it the greatest, but really? Pathetic excuses for poor engineering just don't wash.

It really is extraordinary seeing the number of posts that look to blame the customer for expressing an unmet need. That's how markets are supposed to work!

Or just sell your old thunderbolt adapter and buy this USB-C to gig-e?

This incompatibility is a bit puzzling, I'm wondering what is causing it? It seems that any chip built to the standard should work.

What more can you actually do with a laptop? Its already a mature market and yeah there's the touch screen option but they've been available on laptops for nearly a decade (badly at first but they're now decent) if not more but Apple is adamant they're not going to make a mac with touchscreen. Have laptops reach their peak in terms of what can be added to them apart from faster chips, graphics and more memory and better displays. They can't get much thinner as far as I can see. Touch Bar is new but I don't know what it is like yet and whether it'll be here for the long haul.

i agree, but I think people see what's available on the other side of the fence (windows) and they see convertible laptops, touch screens, laptops with HDMI, and SD ports, laptops with more then 16GB, many of which are available for significantly less then what Apple charges. I think this caused expectations to be very high, unattainably high and the results are now fairly high backlash

this is only a prequel of what is to come. They have said it themselves. Wireless is the future. Next MacBook... No ports. How else will they keep making thinner lighter. They have lost their mind. Soon everything will be in cloud, bye bye hard drive or ssd.
And the generation after that the MacBook will cost $2000 for the base model, and the box will come with only stickers.

"We made it so thin and light that it weighs 0 pounds and takes up 0 volume! Besides, you should be using your iPad and iPhone for everything anyways".

As has been stated earlier, Apple is only partially to blame.

The devices talked about use the outdated TI controller which was never meant for TB3 devices. Only the new controller by TI is actually designed for TB3 usage.

Windows builds in support for this Frankenstein TB3 outdated mish mash, MacOS doesn't.

It's not entirely Apple'a fault.

I don't think people dropping 1 1/2 grand really give a **** about whose fault it is.

If Thunderbolt is such a mess, maybe Apple shouldn't have insisted on releasing devices that only have Thinderbolt ports.

This entire generation of Macs has been so anti user by Apple it's insane. I've owned Macs for a decade (and been using them longer) and the primary reason I'd spend extra on them was because I trusted Apple to make good decisions for me. And for the most part it paid off in the 2000s. But in the last 3-5 years this has not been the case at all in software, and in the last 2-3 years, the hardware has been a disaster from this perspective.

Thanks! I appreciate that! I didn't realize how many prickly people were on here just wanting to argue. This is literally the first MacRumors thread I've ever posted in, and I just wanted to give my perspective as a video professional. I know that Apple doesn't make very much money catering to people like me anymore, but I definitely miss the days when they cared about us. Remember Final Cut Studio? Those days will always have a special place in my heart.

Don't worry stevedry, you're not the only film industry artist that gets an earful on this forum from Apple apologists just for expressing how this latest MBP line-up is a major let-down for folks in our line of business. The assumption that our needs should just match theirs (and if not, we should just switch to another platform) is arrogant, ignorant and tragically disdainful.
Voicing our disappointment, concerns and expectations shouldn't be shouted down and drowned out by the uninitiated.
I still believe (perhaps in vain) that given enough negative feedback, Apple will respond and act. With the amount of negative press this release has received I'm hoping the 2017 models will be a little more tailored towards the likes of you and me.

Yeah they're getting it bad right now but people are complaining like it's the only choice they have. There's so many alternatives out there and if macOS is what you want/need people are just going to have to suck it up and adapt (no pun intended).

So Apple is spanking lazy hardware developers. Can't say that's a bad thing. If that new chipset has been out for a while, it's on the hardware folks to step it up!

Although I've been burned by the chipset update wars. It sucks, but it was an old device that wasn't compatible...
