The (original 2012) MacBook Pro Retina had compatibility issues with early USB 3.0 controllers too. I don't know if Apple fixed it in later updates, but lots of accessory makers had to add warnings of Mac incompatibility and then release new revisions with different chips.

Is Plugable even a respectable company? Could they just be using this as an excuse for delaying launch of their product?

Thank you for this. It seems like everyone is throwing a temper tantrum and forgetting that these types of things have happened before even by the "good" Apple and not just the current "bad" Apple.

This is not an issue with ALL TB3 devices as some in here seem to believe. I'm wondering if there's some issue or security flaw or something in the TI chips that has led Apple to making this decision. There has to be a good explanation. Also, I've never heard of this Plugable company, do a lot of people buy from them?

So now we need a Thunderbolt-3 to Thunderbolt-3 dongle.

Maybe they've just given up coming up with new names or adding up. What came after Thunderbird 3? Thunderbird 3! It's like the recently released OSX 10.12.2 beta 1, which was updated a few days later with 10.12.2 beta 1.

"Apple has chosen to prevent..."

Yeah. I'm sure that's precisely the situation

So would it be any better if the story was Apple didn't bother to test older TB3 devices when engineering? Either way Apple made a decision that led to this.

Either way it's not the case Apple found the MBP compatible w/ older TB3 devices during design but its chip supplier made a spec change without informing Apple. This incompatibility seems to be as Apple planned.

They are innovating and sponsoring change. Legacy USB was too old hat, it had to go. Well even older thunderbolt technology is now too old, it too has to go. C'mon people, they are leading the pack, we can't hold on to outdated technology.

Saw the comment well its only TI controllers. Bit like saying well we take every credit card except Visa. Kind of a big deal company to not support there. Blow off some DIY project made from parts bought a mom and pop electronics shop that works out of the Yongsan electronics market in Seoul...sure. TI? really?

Don't worry, I am sure there is some dongle combination that will bypass this. Should have a part number and listing from apple shortly. It will be nice and white and pretty and not cheap for what it does....

There are like, what, 4 TB 3 products right now? Since you know, you're writing an article like this maybe you could have done some digging to see which products, exactly, won't work. I don't know, it seems crazy, but maybe you could add some facts to your post. Nah, it's getting lots of hits every time you write another negative article about the new MacBook Pros, so keep up the great work.

2016 is turning out to be a horrible year. :( the new MacBook Pros suck, the presidential candidates suck, the iPhone 7 doesn't have a headphone jack, what else is Apple going to do to make this worse?? It's like every time there's a new Clinton email leak, there's another article posted here about the MacBook Pro not supporting something or needing another dongle.

Cue the haters....
This has nothing to do with dongles, so let's stop that discussion right now.

Thunderbolt 3 combines PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols into a single signal in addition to power. Its extremely versatile. Just like not all wireless headphones are up to 4.2 BT specs, I'm sure not all T3 peripherals are created equal as well.

Apple is being Apple, and that means outrageously priced stuff with hard to swallow limitations. I think folks forget that this is really been Apple's MO for decades. Either buy their stuff or don't, but stop complaining about something you have no control over.

Your post has absolutely nothing to do with the thread. Oh, and you've got some stuff on your nose there.
