"Apple has chosen to prevent..."

Yeah. I'm sure that's precisely the situation
That was exactly my reaction. One chipset isn't compatible, so they assume Apple intentionally blocked it? More likely the TI chip jumped the gun on the specification and got ahead of the market or there's just a bug in the stack supporting a new technology. As *cough* simple as it is to support USB, Thunderbolt, PCI Express, DisplayPort, power transfer, and whatever else through a single connector...

I see no benefit to Apple in being intentionally incompatible with a single chipset unless allowing a TI device on the bus causes other problems with connected peripherals. If it isn't a fundamental compatibility problem, it'll probably be fixed in an update.

Cue the haters....
This has nothing to do with dongles, so let's stop that discussion right now.

Thunderbolt 3 combines PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols into a single signal in addition to power. Its extremely versatile. Just like not all wireless headphones are up to 4.2 BT specs, I'm sure not all T3 peripherals are created equal as well.

Apple is being Apple, and that means outrageously priced stuff with hard to swallow limitations. I think folks forget that this is really been Apple's MO for decades. Either buy their stuff or don't, but stop complaining about something you have no control over.

Well at least it's not an exploding Note 7 amirite? Ha! I mean that Samsu... wait... are we still doing the Note 7 catches fire meme or is the MBP meme the new Note 7? Seriously, no one has to be a hater to realize the MBP hasn't had an auspicious introduction. It will pass soon. At least it's not like Samsung's Note 7. That thing.. whew... that thing blew up airliners and stil... Hey lemme know if it's still a thing so I can move everyone's attention back to the thing.:D:p

I am going to move away from MacBook Pros. I have been a die hard user and proponent for years. Now they do not meet my needs, and I hate the cutting for thinness (power, battery life, graphic ability, ports...) Below are some of the Power Books/MacBook Pros I still own. Pics do not include my 15" 2010 MBP, Mid 15" 2012 MBP with drive, and currently I use a late 15" 2013 MBP Retina. Sorry Apple, it is time to move on. I am sad.

Er, this isn't North Korea.

So the TB3 "The one port to rule them all" will not work with all. It's a nice i/o but there are so many approaches/implementations that it can be a headache.

On a related note, I think its kinda funny that Refurb 15" MacBook Pros are nearly sold out...... there were many different ones available when I last checked a couple weeks ago.....

I ordered a 2015 13" MBP with the 2.7 GHz chipset and 256 GB storage. Called an hour later to upgrade to the 2.9 GHz and 512 GB. The Apple rep told me they had more than 2000 units left of the the 2.9GHz so I had time to try out the 2.7 GHz before deciding if I wanted the 2.9. The next day I check out the refurb store - 2.9 option was sold out. :(

The reason why we chose to stick with Mac in the first place was because of compatibility issues with PC in the olden days. Whatever devices we plugged into the Macs would just work as long as they are of the same standard. But now? Sigh...

Plug and Play, Apple. Not Plug and Pray.

Ha, I just had the complete screen assembly and logic board replaced under warranty on my early 2013 rMBP, and so I reckon I can go a few cycles. I don't feel I'm really missing anything.
Well, except for the much better screen, 40gb/s tb3, 10gb/s usb and 3.1 gb/s hard drive.
Still, i suppose you can insert a SD card directly into the chassis. Woooo.
