But they won't. Point is if you need a powerful laptop it's likely for work and spending this kind of money on a work tool is firstly not a lot of money and tax deductible over 3 years in most countries.

The other thing of course is resale. Macs all have great, fantastically great resale value. I've just sold a 2 year old macbook for 70% of what I paid for it. This is partly down to the fact you can actually get part fro a Mac 6 years down the line... most PCs are obsolesced after 3 years and you have to rely on eBay which is hard as they make so many models.

And of course why on earth would someone who has used a macbook ever go back to a Windsows Dell.

It is not a powerful laptop. A fully spec'd dell 7710 or Lenovo p70 is a powerful laptop.

The parts part is totally false. Very easy to find parts unless the model is obscure.

Have you tried Dell precision ? A 5510 or 7710 is way better value. And can be bought much lower than msrp.
Value wise, performance wise - no comparison. And build quality is better on Dell. There is no obsession for thinness. Thus better cooling less throttling.

I have been a Mac user... have been. That's the last straw for me! I sold my Macbook (Air/Pro), Apple TV, iMac, etc. I still have my iPhone and it will be my last one. Even if they change prices now, the damage is already done. It is just unacceptable how they just tried to increase the prices and see when we push back. It was unacceptable before, but now it was just insulting. I have a main station running a Linux OS and I use my laptop for simple tasks. My next laptop will most probably be a chromebook or a real Linux OS-based one. Bye Apple. I won't spend more then 1500€ for a real portable workstation and more than 1000€ for a notebook that is only used for the web any more. Phones for 800€ is also absolutely insane.

welcome to the club: i'm loving elementary OS Linux, recently got a Nexus 5X instead of iPhone for less than 300e, sold my apple TV too ... instead i'm now just plugging my laptop via HDMI.

however, maxx'd out cMBP 2012 15" is such a great machine, still loving it. runs linux pretty well. atm i am dual booting osx and linux depending what i'm doing.

Ironically, I felt exactly like you after watching the outrageously pathetic presentation of the new MacBook Pros. In the end, I gritted my teeth and ordered one. Still, after watching the new Microsoft commercial the day before, showing the Surface Studio I had second thoughts. That darn thing is so gorgeous that I was tempted to switch camps right then and there. Oh, and the new computer looked great too! If Microsoft would build a laptop based on the same perceived quality as the Surface Studio, they could easily jump ahead of Apple, especially now.

You're right about resale and the value of Macs.

Issue is Macs reign on top today isn't what it once was a decade ago.

With may competing companies offering higher quality products the playing field is more equal in today's climate.

Microsoft for example have been making some pretty big steps with their branded hardware, the surface studio last week is a great example of their innovation and momentum.

I wish Apple could have done the same with regards to their reputation for quality, however the only reputation they seem to be maintaining is that of a overpriced product.

I'm really just bummed about this release, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. The touch bar is stupid and slows down productivity for my needs, and the price is insane.

So yes, switching to windows is no problem when Apple keeps trending on their decline.

Jesus Christ, I'm surprised Jony Ive hasn't made a sleek and light weight unibody aluminum bullet to snipe this Ming-Chi Kuo Wanted-style from the other side of the planet. How is this one guy year after year taking the surprise out of Apple's launches? I refuse to believe that Apple are feeding this particular person leaks.
<SNIP>

I was on the fence but this pushed me over the edge. I can "survive" a little longer on my maxed 2012 retina macbook pro ;)

It's gotten to the point where what Ming-Chi Kuo says can almost be taken as gospel. He's got so much more insight into the Apple chain than most other analysts or rumor leakers.

So they've "doubled down" on security numerous times - and yet never noticed this guy ? If they are not leaking info to him deliberately they are at least tolerating the leaks. I interpret this as them having noticed that people are not happy

Apple must be very annoyed that many things concerning their computer lines are essentially dictated by Intel. They have Apple by the.. Apples. Bandwidth/PCIe lane/RAM/battery etc, problems with all of these stem from the CPU. One thing we know for sure, Apple is frantically exploring ways to make them not dependent on Intel while at the same time not making their machines incompatible with anything. The A10 Fusion Chip was a warning shot to Intel, telling them to stop missing deadlines for process/architecture releases.
The switch is not a question of whether but when. https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...p-and-where-this-is-all-headed.1928362/page-3

Who's cancelling their pre order? lol

If it were spring, I probably would. By then I might not have to drop $200 on dongles too.

If the benchmarks for the other machines are as meh as the ones so far, I will.

We waited four years for this?

Now we get price cuts, now we get 32GB of RAM? What the hell is going on at Apple?

About a week ago Schiller said they don't build the MacBook for price they build it for experience. Has he changed his mind ... is he now building for price and an even a worse experience?
They are full of **** as always. If next year it's going to be cheaper and suddenly there will be o concerns regarding battery life and 32 GB of RAM. Apple is trolling their customers.

Apple's clearly in a bit of a transition, from 3.5mm to cordless, from USB3/TB2 to USB-C and from Skylake to Kaby Lake/Cannon Lake. The smart move would be to wait this out if one can. Timing matters. Like the huge performance gain we see from Ivy Bridge to Haswell, we'll likely see a "significant" improvement in overall performance (graphics, power consumption & speed) with Cannon Lake. This is not to mention MBP 2017 will be equipped with Bluetooth v5, which is a must for the wireless future that Apple is preaching, and very likely faster AMD graphics card.

How it should have been all along. The pricing is ridiculous. The spec is poor for the money. For around the £2000 mark you should expect 512GB-1TB SSD, Nvidia 10 series, 4k, 32GB Ram. Apple are seriously testing my loyalty. Think i'm waiting another 6 months for them to fail to deliver again?!

Why is everyone so surprised about this? Apple has been doing this for years...expensive first gen product followed by price cut options a year after.

it was exactly like that when they released the first retina MacBook Pro...super expensive when it was first released
And first generation is usually rife with problems, like image retention with the first MBPR. Best time to go in is late 2017 with MBP or early 2018 if you can wait.

Well whatever the reason being, I'm sure Apple has their reasons for it. Maybe preorders aren't as high as expected, more people than not are buying the "old" versions but what's really ironic is that the rMB is getting 32 GB support while the MBP doesn't, it should be vise versa.

There is no way that a machine equiped with an Intel M processor needs so much ram.

lenove P70 = $4000 - you can always find more powerful kit. So what?

Not true for motherboards.. when they are discontinued you will have trouble finding them - daughter boards are even worse.

I've had 4 Dells ... 2 Desktops 2 laptops - all failed in less than 4 years. Laptops resale was zero so ebayed for parts. When I had issues within warranty - off they went to repair not to return for weeks. Never again.

Build quality is better on Dell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow. Righto. Off to the loony bin with you.

Still hoping for a massive drop in SSD upgrade in the Macs...

I'd like 2Tb to be a lot more affordable than it is right now.

Until such time, I'll be hitting the Black Friday sales for some new 2.5" SSDs for my existing 2012 cMBP 15".

Anyone had experience with RAID 0 SSDs in the cMBP?
I've recently put the 2TB Samsung Evo SSD in my 2012 i7 MacBook Pro (16GB memory) and it flies! I agree battery life could be better but the machine is still more than performing well after 4 years. You doubt you could say that about your average (even hi-end) Windoze machine!

Where does Ming-Chi get her scoops from?

Manufacturers and R&D people who work there. Apple sometimes asks component manufacturers to build prototypes for them. You get a sense of where Apple wants to go next that way. Building a laptop takes a lot of planning in advance. This piece of rumour just goes to prove that MBP 2016 is a transition product in every sense of the word - something to hold people over till Kaby Lake / Cannon Lake and till Apple works out how to achieve touchscreen-like functionality without actually having a touchscreen.

Agree - Love the surface Studio... but it does have laptop class hardware and a great screen. but a wacom cintiq screen alone is $2800

Not sure what you mean about quality? Not had an issue with apple quality in 15 years.

See I am the opposite the touch bar could be very useful for me - editing and animation etc. It's up to the developers to make it useful. I suppose if you touch type and need F Keys a lot it's an issue?

As someone forced to use windows at the moment... I cannot wait to leave it's a buggy mess.

Price is reflective of our terrible worldwide economy.

MCK just guessing.

Not even Apple knows by now how prices will be next year. That depends on how good or bad the new MBPs will sell in the coming months. And the question is not will there be price cuts, but how significant the price cuts will be?

It'll be easier and easier to switch now that so many things are on the Cloud. Apple just gave Microsoft about a year window to do serious damage on the laptop and desktop front. CPU aside, Microsoft just does a better job in putting together an attractive desktop. I'm not looking forward to switching but if Apple keeps lagging behind in industrial design, mapping, wireless streaming (AirPlay) and AI, people won't stick around just for macOS.

(3) the new MacBook to be launched in 2H17 may support 32GB DRAM... [if] Intel ships Cannonlake CPU on time in 2017
Does one single person here on the forums actually believe that Intel wll launch their processors on schedule?

Given Intel's track record, 1H19 is just as likely as 2H17.
