Why is everyone so surprised about this? Apple has been doing this for years...expensive first gen product followed by price cut options a year after.

it was exactly like that when they released the first retina MacBook Pro...super expensive when it was first released

It was exactly the same with the MacBook Air. People have seriously short term memories. The amount of angst in here is amusing. This isn't that surprising, at all. The MacBook Air was $1,799 when it came out and everyone basically said it was an expensive, but nice, computer. Eight years later it's $999 and the entry level MacBook.

I would expect the MacBook Air to be discontinued next year. They'll be a general upgrade and $100 - $200 price cut across the board. The MacBook becomes $1,099 and $1,399 with CPU upgrade and nothing else to replace the MacBook Air. Then, they'll do one of two things with the MacBook Pro:

1. They'll get rid of the legacy MacBook Pros and reduce prices by $200 across the board.
2. They'll keep the same prices but double the RAM across the board.

Breaking News: EARLY ADOPTERS WILL PAY A LOT FOR THE LATEST AND GREATEST!

So according to Kgi Apple IS price gouging, ripping its customers off, just to make profit and no other reason.

I don't believe for a second the price will drop, not for a second. And as for offering 32GB RAM options, we will have to see considering Apple don't seem to bother updating their computers for several years at a time these days....
Still, Apple will lose customers in the meantime as they deserve to with this price gouging.

Has Apple ever cut the price on something? Especially Macs?

They go up and down to some degree. Sometimes they introduce a cheaper configuration. Other times it's a straight cut. I don't think they're planning on pricing their cheapest 15" at $2400 in the US and more elsewhere. They maintained the old one for now. I imagine you'll see something similar within a generation, probably touchbar with integrated gpu only for $2000-2200.

I have an early 2015 macbook Air...best computer ever!

I was thinking the same thing, that's Apple's pattern with new designs. The first Macbook Airs were very expensive, now they are their low end. They once had a Macbook and a Macbook Pro line and they consolidated them into one (keeping the plastic version for education). It's just a matter of time until these new machines get the ROI they need to make the mainstream.

Do you cry that BMWs are marked up? Apple is not a bulk discounter like Dell. They sell premium designer product ---with OSX --- that stuff ain't free.

Just to add one more thing...apple products have great resell value. What other computer brand maintains it's resell value several years down the road? For extreme example, check out the going prices for Rev A iPods on ebay!

Just the way it goes for refreshed generations. We should see $400-$600 cuts across the board in the form of new entry-level MacBook Pro with touch bar models next year.

I wonder what the chances are of them eventually dropping the touch bar or de-emphasizing it once they get data back showing that people aren't using it much. Even the non-touch bar Macbook Pro is priced at a $500 premium over the Air it's supposed to replace. A lighter body and retina screen aren't an enticement for me to replace my maxed out 2013 Air, especially when they eliminated all of those ports. Being forced to use a dongle for years to come just seems really backwards to me. If I can get an i7 Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM (I don't care about the touch bar) for ~$1500 I'll reconsider.

I can not stand all the bitching I've been hearing from all you guys since the new macs were announced. Do you guys not remember the price hikes of the rMBP vs the non-rMBP. It took about a year and a half for apple to bring the prices down to where they are today. In terms of why apple isn't shipping macs with 32gb of ram read grubbers explanation. He's right...http://daringfireball.net/linked/2016/10/31/intel-mbp-ram

I cannot stand people like you. Go away.

This article isn't fact or an Apple announcement, just someone speculating what might happen if Intel stops missing their CPU timetables next year.
It's also part of MacRumors concerted effort to put a negative spin on almost every front page story about the MacBook Pro. They're whipping the proles into a frenzy.

hahahaha... and probably we are going to see a 15" model without touchbar.
i saw yesterday the windows surface studio... and i cannot stop asking me why is that beautiful machine not a mac?

Now we get price cuts, now we get 32GB of RAM? What the hell is going on at Apple?

About a week ago Schiller said they don't build the MacBook for price they build it for experience. Has he changed his mind ... is he now building for price and an even a worse experience?

you really do not grasp the idea of supply. This forum is filled with misplaced anger. Not defending Apple on many things, but when it comes to Intel's ability to yield their chips, apple has no say in.

I really hope there is a base 15" without touch bar and without gpu. I really have zero use for the touch bar, especially in Bootcamp Win10.

A MBA retina refresh would look very much like the new entry-level MBP. Same processor, same amount of battery, same weight, same battery life. Or are you suggesting to make it heavier by putting a larger battery in or make it lighter by putting a smaller battery in?
The new base MBP is in no way a replacement for the Air.
It has 2 hrs less battery, different keyboard, ports, screen, much higher price. Only weight is the same.

I'm saying, keep MBA 13" shape, ports and all, but with a spec bump at the same price point, not +$500.
Hey, they kept the 2012 cMBP around for 4 years. The MBA 13" is only 18 months old, unless you count the base 8GB RAM in 2016 an upgrade.

I'm well aware it's probably not gonna happen, but who knows what Apple is thinking these days.

riiiiiiight.

Who cares anyway? Apple seems to have lost their way with their notebook lines. Immediately after the new MacBook Pro introduction I rushed to the Apple site and ordered a top-spec 2015 13" model (3.1GHz, 16GB, 1TB), so that should hold me for a while.

The latest versions of Apple notebooks will be obsolete before USB-C is ready for widespread adoption.

I saw the writing on the wall and did the same, bought a base 15" It has 16GB of ram and still beats the performance of the mid 13" touch bar model of the same money. And has USB, SD, bigger screen, real buttons, and keyboard.

I don't understand how people think that the people at Apple that released the new MacBook Pro will be the same people that are going to make a great Apple computer.

Who's cancelling their pre order? lol
Yeah, I am postponing purchases of either Mac or Dell until 2017, for unrelated reasons but this is good news and I might just wait a bit in case MBP upgrades its processor and drops in price. On the other hand, to be honest, screw Apple I've had enough of 'em.

It's a mini iPad built-in, hence the price of an iPad Mini "built-in". QHD touch display price premiums are way less, but Apple gives you thin slim sliver of one.
I'm no DJ, but wasn't that Demo a joke ? I can see them scrubbing on an iPad, but on that tiny strip?

What I really need instead of these cumbersome decks is a tiny strip of smooth plastic that just about accommodates a single finger said no DJ ever.
