So my $2300 laptop will lose 25% of its value because its used, and in 6 months it will lose another 25% because the updated models are out, but because the newer models are actually cheaper than the model I bought by $300-$400 that means I will lose another 25% of my investment...

Making my $2300 '15 Macbook just about worth $700 in second hand market in 6 months...

nice...
I'm sorry, are you new to computers? Apple?

Shocking, a new form factor goes for a premium during the first run and receives a price drop down the road....like every mac in the past. Shocked I say! Shocked!

I payed the new product premium from Apple when I bought rMBP in 2012 at release...will not do that again.

Now we get price cuts, now we get 32GB of RAM? What the hell is going on at Apple?

About a week ago Schiller said they don't build the MacBook for price they build it for experience. Has he changed his mind ... is he now building for price and an even a worse experience?

Basically, Apple have seen the backlash, know this chap gets inside information and is respected for that and is using him to try and calm the waters lol

What are you doing that absolutely requires the newest laptop on your desk? My Haswell rMBP is great, I can work well with it, and it will be great for another 2-3 years.

Some people just like having the newest thing whether they need it or not. Realistically, just about any computer made in the last 5 or 6 years that wasn't garbage to begin with can probably serve most users just fine. This is why PC/Mac sales are sliding. Other than enthusiasts who will buy new computers just because they are new, most people are content to use their current one until it stops functioning. It's not like 15+ years ago when hardware was advancing so rapidly that after a couple of years a PC would already be unable to run the latest software.

My laptop is about a year and a half old and it doesn't lag behind anything of a comparable price currently on the market, but what's more amazing is that it only recently occurred to me that my desktop is approaching 6 years old at this point, and I have no plans to replace it in the foreseeable future. If I swapped out the HDD for an SSD I could probably keep using it for another 5 years, because the processor and RAM are still quite sufficient.

Cool....

Great timing to do this next year after all of your customers left and bought other laptops

Apple is being really stupid this year

I share your frustration, but Apple is at the mercy of Intel as far as the current crop of available hi performance chips go. Kabylake quad core is not ready and certainly not tested with the new MacPro hardware and to the best of my knowledge, still doesn't support 32Gb of ram. I was hoping against hope for Kabylake and 32GB of ram in the 15" MacBook Pro I will be buying, but it's just not an available option due to Intel being behind AGAIN on it's release schedule.

Also, this is still speculation, but it is an inevitable path for Apple to take. We'll see what Intel can deliver on next year. Any of Apples plans will hinge on the chips available, lead time to prototype/troubleshoot, and when Apple chooses go update their lineup again.

I feel like people love bashing apple when they make major changes to their hardware in a direction that might not be the current expectation. When has Apple not gone out on a limb to challenge current standards? When it comes to owning a computer, I expect that at purchase it will last me 4-6 years. Is a little in convenience for the first maybe 6 months to a year worth it? Yes, because then the rest of its life everyone else is doing the same exact things. Changing to USB-C external accessories is the same exact process when Apple switched from 30pin to lightning. Everyone said Apple is the dumbest company for making people re buy all new accessories or buy converters. How can you expect any technology company to move forward with that type of attitude? Are we suppose to stay in our boxes because we don't want to be inconvenienced when in a years time we're not going to think anything of it. Was everyone inconvenienced when people bought DVD players at $1000 a piece to try and convert massive libraries to disc? People have had 4K televisions for years when there simply has not been any content til recently. Price people pay for being early adopters.

- I'd prefer 32GB ram with shorter battery life.

Too much power according to WHO, right? Maybe Apple should ask their PRO customers what THEY want and how much battery life a PRO user really needs!!!

But everyone is a "pro" in their own minds. Which explains why so many photoshop enthusiasts insist they're crippled at 16GB of ram....as if they haven't had a functional computer all these years without 32GB.....

Maybe you should have bought gold instead if you were looking for an investment to profit from.

I can not stand all the bitching I've been hearing from all you guys since the new macs were announced. Do you guys not remember the price hikes of the rMBP vs the non-rMBP. It took about a year and a half for apple to bring the prices down to where they are today. In terms of why apple isn't shipping macs with 32gb of ram read grubbers explanation. He's right...http://daringfireball.net/linked/2016/10/31/intel-mbp-ram

I'm confused...he says:

"The true reason behind the lack of 32 GB or DDR4 is Intel. Skylake does not support LPDDR4 (LP for low power) RAM."

Yet the Dell XPS 15 (which uses a powerful SKYLAKE i7-6700HQ Quad Core mobile CPU) does support 32GB of LPDDR4!

Apple can't use a POWERFUL QUAD CORE SKYLAKE CPU that supports 32GB DDR4 memory?

I don't care for the 32GB, but id sure like to see a price cut. But im not sure i want to wait another year. What would be really nice is if they added 2x USB 3.0 ports in addition to the thunderbolt to make it easier for owners to transition, seeing as how USB C is non existent right now.

Hilarious if the rumour is correct.

Reminds me of the backlit keyboard not in the first unibody mbp, then there it was in the second, ouch.

/strokes late ‘13 15" rMBP which will do me for years

I'm looking forward to when Apple just says "enough!" and switches to supercharged ARM chips for mainstream macs.

Yes, because ARM chips won't suffer the same performance/thermal barriers that other chips do from Intel and AMD as they are magical

This is an almost surefire prediction - we've seen how it was always better to wait for the 2nd generation/iteration after a new model is launched. It was the same story for the 2nd gen Macbook Air (released 2010, 2011 brought price drops/etc) and the original rMBP (released 2011, 2012 brought price drops/etc). First round buyers will always be paying for the bulk of the R&D costs.

I made the bold move this year, under recommendation from other students, to get a surface pro 4. While I agree being able to write notes with their pen is far more useful considering the amount of drawing I have to do, the device is very unreliable. I need restart far more often than my MacBook Pro ever did, and the surface keyboard and pen frequently become unresponsive. I had almost convinced myself to get a new MacBook Pro and and iPad Pro for next semester, but I just can't deal with a device falling and breaking. Despite the issues with the surface at least it has a magnetic charger that breaks away. This isn't a trivial matter as I get no less than two people tripping over my cord every day. It's not their fault as the university has squeezed 151 people taking 22 credit hours in the same room built for 140.
