I'm not sure I like this.. I have a Sandforce based drive, I don't want any sub par ssd that was made in some Korea sweatshop

My Computer boots in 13 sec.. I don't want that to change

and it should be 40 Gigs.. to add "breathing room" for the SSD and apps

All SSDs are made in factories with long hours and low worker compensation. You going to stop using it now?

The real advantage of this is, If your system becomes corrupted, you can wipe the boot drive and keep your data in place. In OS X, is there any reason why applications need to be installed in the applications folder? Could you put the overflow apps on the second drive?

Nice idea in theory but it's not enough space. I do something very similar on my desktop - a 256GB SSD for OS X, apps and Windows with my user folder on a different drive. My OSX partition with nothing bar the system and applications is 92 GB. Realistically a 8-16GB drive would only be enough storage for the system + a couple of apps. Applications + App libraries take up a lot of space. If it were just the system then the only real benefit would be fast boot up since applications would load just as fast as they do now. The cost of an SSD is simply not worth it just for a fast boot time imo.

This makes me think they arent ditching the optical drive. Unless they are putting another battery in there and advertising 4 trillion hour sleep battery time. I'm broken hearted I desperately want a 128 GB SSD for me to put Adobe CS5 and final cut studio and logic studio on, plus all my games, then give us a 500 GB HDD in the optibay.

Gotta have an optical drive, preferably Blu-Ray. I wanna watch my Blu-Ray Netflix movies on the go. Then again Apple probably doesn't care for NFLX...

Yeah the basis of this reported move would be only the system files to allow forquick boot times and fast finder and other OSX apps

I can't imagine any major changes except sandy bridge if they are not having a media event.

That's what I've been saying. People are speculating new design, look & feel, light peak, dropping usb ports.. NO PEOPLE, it will be simple update there is no media event. Just speed bumps at most.

This has to be kidding. Bigger trackpad would be disaster as it would constantly be in the way when you type. mbp does not need bigger trackpad period.

Fast boot up drive is also stupid as that's not where people spend most time.

I'm going to pick up a 13 inch at least.

Now to see if there is enough to tempt me to a 15 or a second 17 inch.

1/2 pound lighter=carbon fiber or no optical drive.

I would have to say Carbon Fiber, but there won't be any design changes from what's currently in the market.

I'd hate to have a lighter 17" MBP that doesn't come with the power other 17" models.

I know it doesn't do that already, but let's not get carried away.

Or let's take the 17" and put it in a new class that actually gives mobile power users some power, and some space to dissipate that heat.

I'd love to see a 64GB SSD + Hard Drive and no optical drive.

Another problem with flash is a small SSD 8-16GB is not nearly as fast as a larger one 64-256GB. The more flash memory the more room for parallelization of data flow (kind of like RAID).

Most SSD controllers have 8 memory channels, assuming they use 4GB flash chips you need to have 32GB SSD to maximize throughput. If they use larger 8GB or 16GB chips the situation gets even worse where you have to get a 128GB or 256GB SSD to maximize throughput.

Just throwing 16GB of flash on the motherboard is not going to give you that much better performance then a current generation hard drive. Though it may give other benefits like better battery life etc.

Actually, Apple does care for Netflix. They incorporated it in the Apple TV. And I completely agree with you... a bluray drive is something the Macbook Pro really needs.

I've just sold my mid 2010 MBP 15" to a friend of mine. So I hope all of these features or some, come true. This was my first Mac and I'm so happy with this apple technology.

PS: I think apple tech research team is looking at forums like this permanently :p 'cause every rumor is a great idea to improve their stuff...
