An SSD to host only the OS and apps; genius!

I did this with my imac 27" late 2009 by replacing the optical drive with an SSD 128GB. On the SSD i've installed OSX and all my apps and it runs like a charm. But 8/16 GB would be far too small for all my apps...

i really need to tear myself away from this website! i'm too focused on this right now lol:eek:

enjoying the anticipation :p

Finally some believable rumors, none of this liquidmetal or lightpeak crap that is getting thrown around.

The real advantage of this is, If your system becomes corrupted, you can wipe the boot drive and keep your data in place. In OS X, is there any reason why applications need to be installed in the applications folder? Could you put the overflow apps on the second drive?

Software Update will not recognize applications outside of the Applications folders on the partition with the OS and therefore not find updates. I tried making my second partition the Applications folder and this was the problem I ran into.

Unless there's something that comes as a software update to overcome having Applications on a separate partition and being able to update them and any other problems with having two drives/partitions, I can't imagine this being real. SSD's are too small and/or expensive to replace HD's right now and having separate drives/partitions are too confusing and too hectic for the consumer in OS X's current form. (example: I don't think iTunes has a way of getting a music library off an external drive without tweaking some settings and such. Same story with iPhoto for another example.) If they are able to combine the drives behind the scenes without the user having to deal with it directly, this could work, but I don't think there's anything in the OS to do that yet.

Makes perfect sense to me! I hope they will use this "hybrid" feature. Having a fast boot time would be amazing.. and a true instant on from sleep!

Tell me why are people excited about this? I expect 128GB SSDs even in the base 13". I have 16GB in my iPhone, and even that feels like too little.

This has to be kidding. Bigger trackpad would be disaster as it would constantly be in the way when you type. mbp does not need bigger trackpad period.

Fast boot up drive is also stupid as that's not where people spend most time.

perhaps it will have the same height, but be wider.

While I feel the bigger tracpad isn't very useful, I do like that the built in SSD could be very handy but as I said in another post, only is used right. As another said the speed of it might be a big factor.

If this is only for the OS, it's not ideal. I want space to put my applications so they launch quickly! 8 GB is too little, and 16 GB might be too little as well. Suppose it's better than a HDD only though!

Bigger touchpads? 8-16GB SSDs? What?!?

I hope this is not true...

If this is true, it's probably similar to the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Drive with a 4GB SSD for cache, only better:

That might work for many (probably most) users to speed things up.

Unfortunately that won't help with big iPhoto libraries. On my MacBook iPhoto was unusable (>100GB library), everything was crawling slow ... once I upgraded to a SSD things got snappy and fast when doing stuff in iPhoto. I assume the main reason is that all the data and database are now on the SSD. At least for me, the hybrid solution would not be the perfect one ... but it seems that I will have the option to go full SSD (I just have to wait until the 500GB SSD drives have a more reasonable price).

Why no TRIM?

More lameness from Apple. Instead of a tiny dedicated SSD for OS X, why don't they just program a TRIM function into OS X and offer SSD's for those who want them?

No optical drive is certainly the future of notebooks, but as someone that still buys physical CDs and DVDs, it's not practical for my needs. Though I suppose Apple could always sell me an overpriced external drive.

That's what I've been saying. People are speculating new design, look & feel, light peak, dropping usb ports.. NO PEOPLE, it will be simple update there is no media event. Just speed bumps at most.

In early 2009 Apple introduced a complete redesign of the iPod Shuffle and then in the fall of 2009 Apple introduced a redesign of the iMac, White MacBook and introduced the Magic Mouse all in a Press Release (and the front page of Apple.com), and most recently, the Magic TrackPad.

Apple doesn't need to hold a large press event every time they introduce a new (or update) of a current product. The iPhone and iPad are still new devices and need to have a large media event to generation large hype in advance of the release, but the Mac line is selling at rapid pace (and faster than the market) and so a media event doesn't seem as necessary.

I really want to see a 13in with a dedicated GPU, no optical drive, 1/2lb lighter, Core i5 and still a "10 hour battery" if not more. And of course an option for matte or at least glossy without the glass but I know neither will ever happen... How about instead an IPS panel?

Not that I really need a new MBP, probably will wait one more year as I don't expect this to be a massive redesign anyway.

All those upgrades would warrant a media event. Either they don't launch till mar1(tue). Or we don't get the hybrid hdd. let's see if invitations go out tomorrow or wed.

Give us the 13" higher res screen off the MBA please!

I hope they don't drop the SD card slot. The latest models support the higher capacity and higher speed rated drives up to capacities not yet available. Having bootable SD cards with OSX for running utilities and also bootcamp partitions is pretty nice.

Trust me... the SD card slot is here to stay... for a while at least.
