So the new PRO's come with a build-in flash drive to boot up the OS. Remember 'Back to the Mac'? Sounds like the hw is being prepared for Lion. If iOS and OSX are to be more unified than having the OS in flash memory is a logical next step. Technically it is already pretty simple to boot OSX from a USB flashdrive and run all apps from a network share. And you don't even need a Mac to do that

Maybe I'm missing something... But... What the heck would u need a larger trackpad for? What new functions are gonna come up that u can't use the current trackpad with? It's just gonna be different gestures no?

Anyone?

Have you ever used a Magic Trackpad? It is larger than the current MacBook Pro trackpad, and I have to say it is the best trackpad I have ever used. The fact that is large means you do not have to lift your finger as much, and doing four & five finger gestures is actually more comfortable.

Yes, you can do four finger on the MacBook Pro and the trackpad is pretty large, but the larger they can make it the better.

I have a feeling that the larger trackpad will only be on the 15-inch and 17-inch models though. I suppose they could make it just slightly wider on the 13-inch but I don't expect the depth to increase due to size constraints with the keyboard.

If you currently own a MacBook/MacBook Pro without SSD, this upgrade will feel like a massive performance boost if Apple really does implement a small SSD for the OS installation. I guarantee you'll be reading rave performance reviews everywhere about the refresh if this happens. :D

Like the MBA reviews...I just hope they dont give it peanut SSD space (8-16GB) for the OS. Who cares if iTunes launches faster, if I cant put SC2 on the SS? :D

My dreams

I think it's funny how many people think they "know" what it will have. The truth is only a handful of people who work for apple know exactly what it will have and what it will look like. Everything else is speculation. Feel free to make predictions and express your desires, but stop claiming you are certain that that new MBP will have "x" feature. My hope is for SSD all the way, not some crappy 8-16Gb junk. I don't see why people are so content with a lesser item when apple could easily make the entire storage SSD (as seen on the MBA). I would love to see a refreshed look. If it happens, I'm sure it'll be good no matter what they put out. A larger trackpad seems like it would get in the way of typing, as pointed out by numerous people, so I don't think that would be a good idea. However, if it is larger, it'll probably be only a smidgen larger is my guess, as to avoid this, or there will be a major redesign of how things are laid out. I think the processor upgrade is a given. Blu-ray, would be awesome, but I'm extremely doubtful because 1) It would make pirating blu-rays way too easy for apple users and of course apple would rather you download their HD movies from iTunes 2) I think having a BR drive would be too expensive for them. I would love for my MBP to be lighter, so I'm definitely hoping for this. I need a portable machine with power, but I really hate that the thing hurts my back from lugging it around all day.

So much BUZZ over what...just nothing.
Why you guys upgrading beside the point that your MBP is bad and cant be fix or is to old...?

8-16gb ssd OS?? ewww my Applications folder is 18Gb now...

bigger trackpad ok = LION = does that mean cdrom is gone?

if the 8-16Gb is true im not buying one.. waiting for next update :)

I disagree about the Magic Trackpad. I bought the thing, used it for a week and returned it because I hated every minute of it. It's finger tracking ability was extremely poor, it felt really awkward to use, and it was very uncomfortable. I like the magic mouse much much more, although it is also a bit uncomfortable with how flat it is.

Depends on the gestures...
There is space to the sides in the 13.... Top and bottom would be harder though...

Mm. Also, if you are heavily paging out, you may fill the SSD and that is not good by any means. You need at least several GBs of empty space for the OS to function normally.....

32GB should be the minimum, preferably 64GB.

And yet the Seagate Momentus XT only has 4GB. And the power isn't substantially higher than a normal platter based HD. ( 8GB of MLC flash to spread the wear out more would be an option. )

If the Flash/SSD is treated as a cache you don't need large amounts. All the newer MBP needs to do is treat it exactly just like that. If you boot alot then boots gets faster. If you start 5 apps every day , then they get faster.
Any decent OS puts a buffer cache between the HDD and the apps anyway. flash NAND that is available to make that bigger would be transparent to the apps and the device.

Same deal with the "20GB" apps folder. Extremely few users are using all of that at any one time.

That would require the HD to enter sleep mode (i.e. stop spinning) every time you're not using it. Not a very practical option as it will then take several seconds for the HD to spin up.

Errrrr, it isn't like Mac OS X doesn't do this now. You can set the power saving settings to spin down drives when idle.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Source is also saying that in two weeks the MBP will be updated..I wish THAT isn't true

It says "in the next two weeks". That could mean they're coming tomorrow, it could mean their coming on 7th March.

Probably already been mentioned, but if there is a dedicated SSD just for Mac OS X, how would one do a reinstall? In Disk Utility, will they just able to select said SSD and reformat like usual?

...

underwhelming, I never reboot my mac as it is and the OS is already fast. What I would notice more is if the applications were fast. Maybe they are doing this to get a suspend to disk that has instant on rather than just suspend to ram

...

as for the larger touchpad, the only way to make it bigger on the 13" would be to make it wider...so increasing accidental presses by taking away the wrist press area. It doesn't really even need to be as large as it is right now the 11.6" air is smaller and no one complains

16GB SSD is too little space! Now i've a 64GB SSD (plus 1TB 5200rpm HDD) and on the SSD there's space for only MacOSX, Applications and one virtual machine. The /Users directory is on hard drive (with iPhoto Library and all user stuff), so in future i'd like a 128GB+1TB, to put in even /Users, Downloads etc... I hope if there's such a small system disk, they will not remove ODD, so i can replace it with a SSD drive!

What are they really going to do about 13 inch MBP?

They really have room for all of these?

1. Dedicated graphics
2. Bigger battery
3. Bigger trackpad
4. All of those ports including SD
5. Bigger HDD
6. Optical Drive.

Yet, BGR says it will be .5 pounds lighter. Please show me how.

...

whats more interesting is the half pound lighter...either new case material, smaller battery (hell no) or no optical drive

'Bout time to upgrade from my late 2008 aluminum MB, on which the boot time has slowed considerably (even the time until the apple appears seems agonizingly slow, and I reboot once a day on average so it means something to me). I will only upgrade if the 13" MBP is brought up to a current generation CPU though.

Why do you think the trackpad needs to be any bigger than it is now?? Its already pretty much the biggest laptop trackpad that ever existed.

Agreed.
