alphaod,

"while WE update the store"

You work at Apple? Forgive me if this is common knowledge.

Do any of you think this is going to be worth it? Because the only reason why I'm holding off on buying a MBP now is because I think I'm waiting for an upgraded GPU. Am I stupid for thinking that? Sorry, I don't know much about this stuff.

Previous update experiences point to a GPU update this time around.

When the update is going to happen is still subject to question.

Well apparently, according to Steve Jobs, and everyone I've spoken to at Apple, the GPU is just fine. They say there's nothing wrong w/ it and they'd never sell a computer w/ a component they know to be faulty.

So considering that, they'd only upgrade the GPU if they thought it was out of date & there's something better out there thats cost effective. If not, expect the Nvidia to be back in full force across the board.

If they switch to another GPU all of a sudden & its NOT an upgrade that would look to be an admission they had knowledge of the chips being faulty....ie opening themselves up to all kinds of legal issues if this thing does get out of hand. At this point its still not clear cut.

What Apple's PR machine says and what they believe are different things.

There is obviously something very wrong with the GPU.

is the 8600m gt the BEST gpu the MBP can have without having to increase the size of the case? and if i go out and buy a mbp now, what are the chances of me experiencing this defect (i.e what's the percentage of defective mbp's?)

i don't necessarily need a laptop now, but with my dell being broken and this macbook the only computer in this household, not to mention i need this for school, i'm really itching for a mbp right now. but at the same time i don't think i'd have a clear conscious

If you listen to the concensus on rumour boards you'll never buy one. Based on what the vibe I'm getting is there are LOADS of MBPs out there that are functioning just fine w/ no indications of problems whatsoever.

Some people say its "just a matter of time" but c'mon really, how can anyone know. The GPU failure rate is not 100%, so far its just speculation from alarmists and doomsayers. Anything is possible but I'm not convinced yet otherwise I wouldn't have ordered mine. I'm taking my chances w/ the GPU because everytime there's a new revision there's new problems & glitches so at least I know what to look out for & have covered my bases. If there's a major overhaul then you never know what you're getting then. At the same time I didn't want to play the waiting game any longer.....June....July...August...Sept....Oct....JAN!!! whatever.

If the one you get is defective then Apple will either fix it or replace your entire laptop. I'd get AppleCare just to cover your bases beyond the 1 yr period.
