1) put in the 320 7.2k, I know you said you needed it for the system drive, but I have seen some great improvement over the 5.4k version of that drive. And the Scorpios are the right price IMHO. Finding them for around $110 on the average so I know you could get one for a smoother $100.
A 320 7.2k? Really? That's sooo 2008. Newegg has the new Seagate 7200.4 in a 500 GB capacity. 500 GB @ 7200 rpm, Mmmmmmm.

But yeah, I would never bottleneck my MBP with a 5400 rpm drive. Laptop drives are so dirt cheap these days anyways, there's no point in buying anything but the very top models.

Nicely done, mate.

There was much discussion regarding thermal paste 3 years ago, when the coreduo models first came out. It's sad that Apple are still applying that stuff with a trowel.

I stripped my 2 GHz and rebuilt it using Akasa 5022 and it's run relatively cool ever since. It looks like I'll be tearing my Unibody 17" apart as soon as it arrives, just to be on the safe side. The Akasa compound can be quite tricky to use but that super thermal grease looks very easy to apply with its brush-applicator. Do you have a link to its thermal properties?

Yeah, I was there then. If you scroll to page two you'll see bits of my MBP15 on there along with Apple's terrible handy work - Looked like someone puked on it, or worst! My photos also graced the pages of engadget but they used it without permission (so freaking annoying).

Their story. My photo has since been removed after much ranting.. lol

Why bother buying a refurb through Apple if you are going to immediately void all support for it? Why not just get something off eBay?

and not send it back haha

What a awesome idea!
But seriously. I don't think I really need a eighth Mac!!

I'd send you mine but we are in two separete continets! :D

I don't mind, so long as you don't mind forking the postage, good to have a tracker too and lots of packing!!

I've sent my 30" TFT back from Japan, and for those who owns one will know how big the box is.. lol

The price I paid this for is way better than anything i could find on fleabay. Plus being an official refurb, it's gonna be trouble free (fingers crossed) with a full history. I'm not gonna be buying a chopped up machine from some lamer on fleabay, and it's not gonna have missing corners or scratches. I don't mind voiding the warranty cause I have mobile insurance bits. And in most stores, Apple's in store repairs are a Joke! Seriously!! By having insurance, I get a new replacement within 72hours, not matter if it's refurb to begin with.

What kind of insurance is that? Where do you buy it?

If you search google, you'll find numerous companies who'll sell you cover, some are domestic others are international, some are rapid replacement policies but you'll pay more! Just make sure you read the fine print as many will have odd clauses and no bonus claims.

I usually buy a single policy that'll cover all my mobile equipment, including video and photography equipment against Fire, Theft and most importantly Accidental damage. Every year I'll just renew it, adding on whatever new equipment I've acquired.

*snip*

No, I'm afraid not. It was over a year before that, although I do recall the problem recurring later.

Here's a MacRumors thread and here's one on Apple's support forums.

I'm afraid I can't find the original threads, specifically those by Jean-Cyril (the first MacBook Pro grease-monkey), but here's my take on the cause of the problem from way back in May 2006.

Mmmmmm..... Storage space and speed..

So here are some of the images I took regarding the cleanup of apple's horrible mess. Honestly... Not completely sure why they do such a sloppy job at putting the grease on. Anyway.. I hope folks will find them helpful.

First I cleaned the chips using various solvents, most of them available from the local corner store. I know some of you prefer to use more expensive cleaners but I find standard Liquid Petroleum aka Zippo Fuel does a great job! Just make sure you're ain't smoking, cause this stuff is really flammable!

I apply a few drops to a photographic grade cotton swobs, about 10 are required. I choose them cause they have a lovely pointy end good for gettin' in all the nooks and crannies, plus they have less dust! (annoys me) They're ideal cause the crappy paste Apple seems to use gets everywhere, it's nothing but an atrocious mess!

*waves fist at Apple*

If your worried about the possibilities of grease on the surface, use some iKear on the die with another fresh cotton swob.

Ultra High-definition macro photos of the most important chips in your MacBook... Cause I know some of you folks loves to see details. Please refrain from usng them in your blogs without asking for permisson.

▲Intel CPU, for those who don't know.▲

Below, the part of the Logic board most of you manage to spill liquids on and more often than not, you'll come to this forum for help and advice. I just thought I'd post this so you'll be more advised as to why the system seem to fry from a little water! This thing, known as the logic board lays bare right under the keyboard, there's really very little protect between the back of the top-case and it...

▲▲ This is the battery connector ▲▲
Remember, even when your system is off, there's live current on the logicboard!!

▲ I've applied liquied thermal paste to the dies, making sure there not so much it's dropping everywhere. There doesn't need to be much, just enough to create a solid bond between the processor die and the thermal pad on the heat-pipe.

▲Side by side view.
Now the machine is ready for reasembly... Yay!!

For those interested, all photos we're taken using a Canon EOS 40D with EF 100mm Macro f2.8 lens, mounted on a carbon fibre Gitzo tripod and Gitzo ball-head.

A refurb MBP 17" sure looks like it wasn't opened up and given the troubleshooting it deserves. So, beyond the thermal paste, did you notice anything out of the ordinary?

Yep...

Apple supplied and sold this machine as a 17HR, 2.5Ghz with 2Gb RAM, 200Gb 7200RPM HD
but it arrive with slightly different specs.. On booting up it's actually:

Bargain I say!!! Right?

Looking at the intel chip on the board it looks like you got a free proc upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6.

Question. If you've had your logic board replaced do the Geniuses reapply thermal paste or is it china factory applied? and if the former, do they still do a crappy job regardless?

FTR i also thought it was a Unibody thread

To be honest. I don't know. Never required a new logic board on any of my computers... Yet each of them have been butchered and thermal paste reapplied. Thinking about it, does reapplying the paste make the machine live for longer?

Don't forget to update to 10.5.6! :p

BTW great pics. You have me looking at new cameras! :D

hey there

where did you buy your Body Film. I glanced on the Power Support site, but didn't see such film. Thanks

I would guess so since internal components dont cook themselves under as much heat. I ask because i also bought a refurb stock 15" MBP which ended up being the same specs as yours and had to have my logic board replaced because my Nvidia chip was faulty (no trouble since then).

So i'm wondering if hey reapplied the thermal paste in my case...probably not and if they did its probably a rushed, crap job.

You should post your temps now, i currently hoover around 49-54C with Safari, Mail, iTunes, Quicktime & Adium running including dashboard

Ah thanks.

Speaking about cameras...
I'm waiting for Canon to release an update to their EOS 1DS mk III!
So many rumors flying about, It's becoming annoying.
I hope it's gonna be soon. Around June would be great!!
Though if it's gone SD (again), then I'll settle for a mkIII.
