The brightness is different from the perception of our eyes. as the gloss generate a lot of glare. So it seems brighter. The matte emits a diffused light, so it seems darker.

thats god news ... :) now I´m happy again ..

that is exactly what have been a lot of talk about .

The Glossy gives an illusion that gamers want and designers dont want ..

I´m one of thouse who is a designer and cant stand glossy .. If the MBP Antiglare is close to my ACD 30 inch in brightness and color I will be more then happy ...

And that would be wrong. You see, Matte doesn't make light hitting it magically disappear. Its the same amound of obstructive light, just spread over the entire surface instead of focus on certain spots.

Both screens looks bad in bright light, its their brightness that allows you to power through the obstructive light. low brightness=invisible screen, matte or glossy.

ok. I get your point. But today I work with BIG windows behind me on a ACD 30 inch ... I tried with a Glossy MB on my desk and the Windows behind me where reflecting on the screen like HELL ... but not on the ACD 30 inch . And its because of my working enviroment I went for matte ....

ofcourse matte has its "dim reflections" in sun light .. but compared in my working envoriment the glossy where the dealbreaker ... it simply was impossible to work with the glossy ...

and I also work with lots of dark images. mostly 80 % of all images I work with have more dark then white and that turned the glossy into a mirror ..

and maybe its just me but I dont want to look at myself all day ... especielly when I have a bad hairday :D

CRT isnt glossy, there was no "glossy vs matte" in CRT, you just had CRT. And CRT screens arnt bad for your eyes at all, its just electrons fired at a glass surface, its no more dangerous than going outside.

CRT screens are far more accurate for graphic design than any flat screen you can purchase, with much higher colour accuracy and better precisness.

sorry m8.

Do we really need every thread to descend into a "glossy/matte" bickering match? This is supposed to be about delivery dates. Please stay on topic, people.

Mine's "Out for Delivery" with TNT! :D

im guessing your in the UK like me. When was yours shipped if you don't mind me asking :p. Mine still says "In transit to final destination - carrier details to be updated shortly."

I´m starting to get rather pissed of now ..

Order Jan 8
5 Feb - The machine is "under custruction" according to our Local Apple Retail store ... they "prommise" is should be shipping within a few days . possibly as late as week 9

24 Feb - The machine is STILL under cunstruction. tought the Apple Retail Store is going to call Apple HQ and ask "what the *€ is going on" ...

Do you really use your computer at that angle? I tend to sit facing mine. In fact, how do you even use the keyboard with it almost at right angles to you?!

I got a WALL of Glass Windows behind me ... working on a ACD 30 inch (matte ofcourse) and a MBP 17 (old matte version)

I understand, I was being a little sarcastic to point out that taking a photo of a glossy display at that angle is ALWAYS going to make it look really bad, but when you're sitting normally looking at the screen it's nowhere near that bad.

I do understand that you might have large windows behind you etc which casts light onto the screen, and you may find that the reflections bother you. On the other hand, if you're able to move the laptop to a different angle where the windows don't cause a big reflection problem you can solve the problem and benefit from the advantages the glossy display offers.

As with anything, there are upsides and downsides to any technology. Matte displays don't have much of an issue with reflections, however they can appear less defined, less contrasty and less vivid than glossy displays. Glossy displays obviously benefit from being sharper, more contrasty and vivid but can suffer from reflections/glare.

You make your decision based on what you want from the display and buy accordingly. Some have chosen the glossy, some have chosen the matte. Neither is 'better' than the other, they're simply catering to different needs.

Hi,
Hope this helps, my MBP was shipped on 17th & in transit until yesterday evening when the message changed to 'UK Distribution Centre', then 3hrs later to TNT with a tracking number. I called TNT who said it would be delivered today-at last! Latest is (from TNT) out for delivery from their Wellingborough depot at 7.00am-so not long now.
(Ordered 13 Jan, 2.93, 7200 & Applecare, that seems to slow things up)

It seems to me that Apple isn't shipping a massive amount of these 17" MBPs at the moment, you'd expect that if they were in full production now that they'd be spitting out hundreds if not thousands per day, enough to satisfy the pre-orders at least, but seemingly there are a lot of people still waiting who ordered after the announcement. I would love to know what's holding them up as it's nearly 2 months after the original announcement and seemingly only a handful of people actually have had theirs shipped!

Ahhhh that does help! thanks. I did order a bit later than you (25th jan no applecare) but mine was shipped on the 19th. So hopefull its only a couple days more to wait! I thought i had a long wait but yours was even longer :( hope you enjoy it when you get it!

Received mine but it is malfunctioning.

I received my 17" MBP Friday. I was so exited! Finally! It is a beautiful machine. It turns out, though, that the 9600M GT video card is bad and the laptop has to be replaced.

So here I am, back on the delivery dates thread waiting to see when a laptop ordered probably today, 24FEB2009, will be delivered.

This 17" Uni was a replacement for a late-2008 17" MBP...

Ugh. I have to start waiting AGAIN.

Do you think if I ask Apple for an upgrade, like the 2.93GHz proccessor, they would give it to me for all of this inconvenience?

Couldn't hurt to try? if you don't ask you don't get right...

regarding the glossy/matte . you are 100% right ... its like I´ve said a 1000 times . its all about personal taste / needs and working enviroment

I ordered 8 Jan and thats like pre pre order ....

and the Anti-Glare 2.96Ghz 256 GB SSD have shipped for some - > http://web.me.com/goulwen.pele/Macbook_Pro_Unibody_17"_antiglare_SSD_256/MBP_17_antiglare.html#22

but like you said not for everyone not even for every pre orders .. seems veryy veryy random because people who have order after me have got there shipped and some even recived it ...

like my order have been for the last 3 weeks "under custruction" acording to the Apple Retail store ... so all I have to say now is ??????????????
