All this just makes it that much more important I put SSD RAID in my Mac Pro. I can't have my laptop more powerful than my desktop--it just wouldn't be right. I need to find some new work to pay for all this stuff.

I just checked. My MBP cleared customs in Anchorage. It should leave in a few hours for Newark. Yeah!

Yes your logic for upgrading the Mac Pro makes much sense;). Here's hoping you MBP shows up soon!

the screen went black and 2 puffs of smoke came billowing out of the back..... I thought dang it, there goes my MBP, but I remembered that it was still covered under Apple care, so I made an appointment at the Apple store for Sunday.

, "because of the numerous issues in the past with this MBP, we are going to replace this with one of the new 17" MBP for your troubles" I was a little stunned, but thought, thats Awesome!

You just scored a touchdown in the Superbowl. Enjoy it--that was a nice score! It is nice to hear you had such wonderful luck. Keep it rolling...

Battleship MTRON

Read this article: Battleship MTRON which tested SSD's in a RAID configuration. Then consider the state of the art with Samsung 256GB SSD's. The limitation is the RAID controller. With the Samsung's speed, even two of these would be so ridiculously fast--two would be such an improvement, you would not need to step up to more.

I looked into the Apple RAID controller. It tops out at 320MB/s. It would choke on two Samsung's. Other brands seem to top out around 800MB/s.

Can you imagine four Samsung's in a Raid with that kind of performance for Read. Add one more, which would fit in a Mac Pro, and with five you could have that speed on write as well.

Have you been able to confirm the SSD is the new Samsung?

SSD Orders

My MBP just left Alaska seconds ago for the Newark! Hur-ray!

Touch down at Newark Airport at 2:08 am EST!

So the question is: Will they need a day to get it to Connecticut and another day to get it to me? Or will they be able to make the 94 minute drive to the local delivery center in one day? They would have four hours to get it to Connecticut to make the morning deliveries. I think they will do it.

If they don't, I think I have a decent shot at picking it up tomorrow. I'll try if it doesn't get delivered tomorrow morning.

It might be time to get out my spare power cord and Ethernet cable, all ready to plug and connect to my new laptop! I might have some SSD benchmarks for you guys by 11 AM tomorrow.

Here is my checklist.

1. Start Video Camera
2. Time the Boot up.
3. Snap a system profile image
4. Run XBench
5. Gasp
6. Time Shut down
7. Open up the back and take pictures of the SSD drive!
8. Post the pictures & video.

If Only....

We had some way of tracking all of the 17" MBP shipments like we did with the iPhone 3G this past summer (Direct-Fufillment's Going by store of course)

I always liked looking at the big long list of people in front of and behind me!

I think that would be a kick for this process!!! Any other takers!?

SSD Orders

I heard that it was Toshiba.
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Unibody/618/1#c185

Anyway, I was thinking to order that one too, but instead I opted for the Intel 160GB. I am glad I did so too.

I just installed that Intel SSD to my new 17" unibody and the xbench results are sick:
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=346756

No kidding that is sick. How fast is that Intel? Does it boot up before you press the "on" button? <grin>

Please post some videos of it booting up and loading applications.

In any case, if the Apple SSD is a Toshiba, it has the same specs as the Samsung. I won't complain a bit.

Reading speed Maximum speed 240MBps (sequential mode)
Writing speed Maximum speed at 200MBps (sequential mode)

And more good news about the 512 GB SSD coming out soon. Wow!

Unibody RMA :(

I received my 17" unibody MBP this morning while I was at work. It took everything I had not to open it at the job. I got home a few minutes ago extremely excited only to see that the top lid near the front opening piece had a large scratch. The severity depends on the angle from which it's viewed, but I don't think I can live with this on something I paid so much money for. I just set up an RMA. I'm hoping to have a new Macbook Pro by the weekend, but between my configuration and the demand in general I may be out of luck. In the grand scheme of life this is trivial, but this is an :apple: forum so I'm entitled to vent a bit :)

Looks like that ifixit link about the SSD also has a bunch of pics of the anti glare screen too. That's the first I've seen of it in detail. Looks pretty nice to me, still like to see more pics...

Smart move. For the price you pay, you should not have to accept a scratched up machine. I am thinking about getting a neoprene case for mine. I have heard too many stories about these things getting scratched up, although my niece has had hers for months now, and it still looks perfect.

SSD Orders

I just read there is a 1TB SSD currently being made with similar specs to the Samsung and Toshiba. The drive is fast--sustained read speeds of 240MB/sec & sustained writes of 215MB/sec on a SATA II interface. Made by Pure Silicone, the Nitro 1TB is notebook size. 100.2mm x 69.85mm x 9.5mm. It was described as being too big for notebooks, but these dimensions would fit in any notebook. 4TB would fit in a 3.5" drive case at these densities.

Memory dies sizes have recently quadrupled--I think this means we will see Moore's Law a 4x factor in the next 18 months for SSD's.

Hard Drives are getting bigger, true, Seagate just announced their 7200rpm 2TB drive, but I think the sizes of SSD's will surpass magnetic media next year and compete on price the year after with 4TB or larger offerings.

JUST SHIPPED!!!!

Should i ask UPS to delivery on Thursday or ask my neighbor to sign it for me?

here is a dude who have recived his MBP 17 Antiglare with 256 SSD

and I feel about crying when I se this ..

Compare the pictures of the MBP 17 Inch screen brightness and the MB Air

http://web.me.com/goulwen.pele/Macbook_Pro_Unibody_17"_antiglare_SSD_256/MBP_17_antiglare.html#36

Also the SSD seems to be Toshiba 256 GB SSD and the performance is 2.5 SLOWER then the intel ...

Haha the screen looks about as bright as a cloudy day! Unluck to people who got matte screens.

how can that be . screen brightnes = LED backlight right ? Tought the brightness seems to match up the ACD 30 inch brightness . But why the diff in brightness between the Air and MBP. makes no sense
