Just ordered my very first mac. It is exciting to play with a new laptop and operating system. I decided to get an apple for a few reasons, I have ADC pricing, I am in IT and realized i have no experiencing with OSX, the new macbook pro's are sexy, apple has one of the best customer support in my view, and it can dual boot with windows.

I love windows and always will, so it will be interesting what I think about OSX.

Welcome to the bright side! :)

I´m curious on your opinion once you get a little familiar with OS X. Most (if not to say: all) people i know loved Windows (coz, as it was the only system they knew they could hardly compare it to something else/possibly more convenient).

After switching, it took only a few weeks until they hated the MS - System, all being a little angry with themselves for not switching earlier.

However, Good Luck!

Damn, delivery date just changed to 2 march instead of 27 february :(

I can not see my self hating Microsoft. There is many reasons why Windows is great, although sometimes Windows does drive me nuts sometimes to the point that I have hit my laptop keyboard. I have a very unbiased opinion about OSX and Windows. I am sure there will be some things I wont like about OSX but nothing is perfect. I think people hating Windows is blown out of proportion. Vista did suck at first I admit but after SP1 its very stable. Although at least now I will feel more secure when using the internet because somehow my website and a few other accounts get cracked into, most likely from a trojan on my computer because of certain sites ;) .

Anyways Ill post a topic of my experience when I get it. Until then ill be staring at apple order status every hour (I am impatient with new toys...).

March 2nd? Where do you read that?

Mine didn´t arrive today, either. Seems it´s a whole container, coz my delivery tracking reads exactly the same.

Appears crazy: it arrived in Cologne, Germany yesterday and is now transported via Warsaw, Poland to Nuremberg, Germany.

However, i have no EAT. It´s ridiculous, the package needs no day from China, Asia to Europe; but it seems to need 3 or 4 days to be shipped from Cologne to Nuremberg (what isn´t that far away)...

I can not see my self hating Microsoft....

Well, people i know do not hate Microsoft; they only hate to use Windows, as it´s pretty much counter-intuitive. As long as people expect things to be as they are in Windows (given it´s the only system most people know) some just don´t recognise its sometimes really strange or complicated behaviour.

As for myself, i am just happy if i do not have to deal with XP/Vista (unfortunately, as developer sometimes i have to), as both systems just suck compared to far more convenient OSs (Linux/FreeBSD + KDE4.2 or Mac OS).
Mac OS is much more elegantly designed, so using Windows isn´t too much pleasure.

It´s like dealing with cars; once you gave your uncle´s Porsche GT2 a test ride, you hardly like your plain old beetle any more ;)

Of course, like always that depends on personal preferences, i guess.

Sorry for O/T + sorry for falling back to the old, well know discussion!

I would just like to point out its easier to hack OS X than Windows, so technically Windows is more secure :p

My delivery says Rescheduled Delivery: 02/03/2009

Bur reading through this forum seeing other people in Europe having the same experience, I still hope UPS will deliver tomorrow

Sorry, i cannot agree there; i know, there are a lot of discussions on that matter out there.
So far, however, if i compare actual real world threats it seems clear to me what system is preferable in terms of security.

Apple is obviously servicing the customers that bought direct first, once they get caught up with the preorders and orders they will ship to resellers.....hopefully.

Thank you for summarising.

Hopefully?.. what other options are there... Maybe Apple will just keep delaying all orders from resellers long enough for us (they waiting consumers) th cancel our orders and go direct to Apple's site... Cunning! (with a 'T' somewhere in the middle)

That's what I thought they might be doing. If nothing else then there own stock and direct customer base is more important than any resellers. EVERYONE STOP ORDERING FROM APPLE DIRECT SO I CAN GET MY F#$%ING LAPTOP!!!!

Shangai hours

I ordered my 2.66, 7200 rpm glossy 17" very early on the 21st from the online US store, showing March 5-12 delivery.

I've been obsessively reloading and rechecking my online order status... but should I even bother (well, of course not, once a day would really be enough!)? Do they assemble the computers from 9-5 in Shangai, or does the factory run in 24h shifts?

Just curious.

At least one 3 Los Angeles Apple stores has them in stock, but only 5400 rpm glossy. I'm tempted to go grab one instead of waiting.

with the net margin (profit) apple makes per machine after all incurred design and production expenses, they are pumping these out 24x7. Which is why you saw a slight dip in wait time for shipment, for some users (but not all; outside of the US remains a wait). I would venture to say that the 17 inch mbp is one of apples most profitable parts.

I've hedged my short on AAPL earlier this week on the anecdotal evidence that the niche market sales of the 17 may offset a bit of weakness on other CPU lines. They make serious $$$ on this machine. It's in their best interest, to save their Q1 numbers, to pump this thing out.

It shipped over night to germany, UPS changed the delivery date to today, so I'm happy now :)

Like you, yesterday I had a 2 March delivery date but now this morning it has changed to today, not sure where your MBP is, mine touched down in Stansted this morning at 03:41 hopefully it should be on it's way to my office!!!!!

It's getting closer to my office, I've got the status of "07:19 - Out for delivery" --- getting closer and closer! Just 6 miles to go.........!!!!

Something is definitely wrong with tracking data:

Mine travelled (data as by UPS) from Cologne to Warsaw and thereafter back to Cologne again (Warsaw --> Cologne in a few hours: NO WAY) and is now "being shipped".

So, the good news is: delivery to be expected today!

Woooohoooooooooo it's arrived at work! 08:24 and I've not even left home yet! I'm just going in now.....

Great news! Mine is still in transit, hope it will be delivered soon :) Have fun with your new toy!

Mine arrived yesterday. They tried to deliver it around noon, but my parent's were out at the time (I was very busy, so I had it shipped there because I'm never home). I called UPS to have them hold it, and went down to their centre even though the voice recording said that I'd have to wait for the next business day. The nice lady working there actually got me the time when the driver would be back, but I had to pick my son up from day care, so I got my dad to get it.

Long story short, UPS made me happy, and I have it working perfectly now. I was on it straight from 8:30 this morning until 13:30 and it worked the whole time. Using about 40% LCD brightness and the 9400 I installed Ubuntu in VMWare, ran some Windows Updates in VMWare, installed Visual Studio, and built a good number of MacPorts. And it survived 6 hours. If I was doing web surfing and e-mail I believe that it would have made the 8 hours.
