With the 10.12.2 update my problem is also solved! I hope there will be a better solution for those who still have the problem.

So what are you backing up your machine to?

So I'll follow up and give my 2 cents for what it's worth.;

I'm having a similar issue to everyone else here it sounds like.

Machine crashes several times a day. Using Apple branded USB-C A/V adapters (2 of them)
Only been happening when I walk away from the computer or right after it's rebooted (after it crashes it'll crash again). But when I'm working, no issues.

Doesn't seem to happen at all though when I'm not at my desk / on the go.

Really starting to become an issue...

Hi everyone,

I'm already on my 2nd MBP. Picked up last Wednesday and swapped it for another model 2 days later after experiencing crashing while my laptop backs up via Time Machine to an external HD. Computer freezes up during data transfer and refuses to acknowledge my inputs. Then crashes and restarts itself.

This is now my 2nd laptop and I'm experiencing the exact same issue. Weird thing is, I was able to do my initial Time Machine backup with no problems.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, totally having the same issue with my replacement MBP touchbar!
What is the fix?

Just got an email reply from Craig Federighi confirming it has indeed been fixed in the new beta! Phew...

'Hi David,
Sorry for the inconvenience!
We we have indeed fixed this issue in the latest Sierra public beta (10.12.2, available at beta.apple.com).
Thanks,
- craig'
I'm running 10.12.2 GM and still having the issue.

Experiencing this issue transferring files with LaCie external drives. Brand new 13" MBP. Spent hours on chat & phone. Conversation / call-back continues tomorrow...

I'm running 10.12.2 GM and still having the issue.

Running 10.12.2 & issue continues to exist!
[macOS Sierra 10.12.2, MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports), 500 GB Flash Storage, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB]

Just bought a new MBP 15 with touchbar and having a similar issue when I connect my iPhone 5s via thunderbolt 3 cable. I was thinking it had something to do with my phone. Should I bother with asking for a different computer? It seems like it's a real problem and not just luck of the draw.

The MacBook Pros are still shipping with 10.12.1, upgrade via the App Store to 10.12.2. I did and everything works.

*Update/Solved* Although OS was up to date, the solution for me turned out to be the re-installation of the OS. After this, my 13" MBP could take anything I threw at it & it would not crash...

I am on beta 10.12.3 and am still experiencing this issue. New 2015 MacBook Pro (retina), backing up to a Time Capsule. The initial backup seems to work, showing a progress bar. But after that the Time Machine just reports "preparing backup" and nothing else. When this occurs I've noticed another symptom: the Mac will hang upon attempted restart or shutdown (black screen with keyboard & Apple lit) and requires a hard shutdown. Entering Time Machine will show a handful of backups; however, attempting to view any of them simply shows the "Waiting" message and they never come up. I've deleted the old backup, reset the Time Capsule, zapped the PRAM, run repair disk...nothing has worked.

*edit*

I should also add that if I cancel the perpetual "preparing backup" the preferences show Oldest and Latest Backup as "none," even though there is a sizable file on the Time Capsule drive associated wit this Mac.

Fixed the issue with a MacOS reinstall. It no longer crashes/ has strange issues with the Apple USB C to USB A Adapter.

I had this crash problem, too. A re-install of the OS to 10.12.3 resolved it for me. No more crashes! Thanks to all on this forum for sharing your details and for posting resolutions. Note: I installed with external monitor and a USB-C thumb drive attached to the machine. I don't know if that made a difference, but that was the configuration that consistently reproduced the crash. External monitor is a Dell U2412M. Machine is a 15" 2.9/touch/460/1TB/16GB. Whoohoo!!

I am on 10.12.3 and still get these computer shutdowns/restarts.
Quite annoying since it is the most expensive computer ever, maxed out MBP13 w touchbar. Not impressed.
I have had 2 MB Airs for 5 years and never did they shut down.

I do not use external drives, but have experienced it in combination with external screens, or just with the computer by itself. The external screen is a 4K screen. Some ppl in this thread claims it could be related to too much data over the USB-C port. Sounds reasonable to me. Maybe in combination with the computer going into/out from sleep mode.
I wish I could give more exact info.
The MB Air was really good at "waking up from sleep", and that is a very useful feature actually. This MBP is in my experience more awkward about it. That is unfortunate.

Hoping for a SW fix :/
These shutdowns + nonimpressive battery + gfx errors on the touch bar are too many errors in general, and esp for that price.

I have been using my 2016 15" MBP for a few weeks without any problems until updating to 10.12.4. After updating, I had a kernel panic while backing up to a network attached LaCie (Porsche designed) HDD (via a Moshi ethernet adapter):

*** MCA Error Report ***
CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6920HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz, CPUID: 0x506E3)
CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

This is actually my second (replacement) MBP. The first was returned because of frequent crashes and kernel panics. However, the error messages on the first MBP were completely different:

I had this problem when I first got my MBP, it was fixed with the software update, but now it is happening again, with the exact same file. Anyone is experiencing a recurrence of this problem?

Getting this error, first time for me. It's been crashing overnight on the regular, but this is happening while I'm actively using it.

I dont have external storage attached, but Im running a VM full time and I have a USB-C attached USB hub with ethernet.

Well, OS update that was just released fixed this. Hopefully a future release doesn't undo it again.

Just happened for the first time to me.

2016 MBP w/Touchbar 15"... 10.12.6 Beta (16G8c)

Was connected to a while bunch of stuff at work, disconnected and when I came home and turned on my laotop I saw the panic.

I can confirm that a similar issue was also present in my MacBook Pro 2016 15" Touch Bar (455), MacOS 10.12.5.
I have a USB-c AUKEY 4-USB 3.0 Ports + HDMI Adapter and when I was performing Time Machine Backup to a USB 3.0 1TB Seagate Portable External Hard Drive, the computer crashed and rebooted after backing up to a certain point. This happened three times, whenever I tried backing up to the hard drive.

I was frustrated and after reading the previous posts, my conlcusion is that 10.12.2 should've fixed this issue. I bought the laptop on May 2017, so it was already pre-installed with the latest MacOS. Also before I started the migration process from my old MacBook Air to this laptop, I was prompted to install 10.12.5, and so I did. I didn't know what to do... until I read a previous post in this thread that mentioned about performing combo updates.

Installing combo updates basically makes sure that Boot ROM and SMC versions are up to date. And so I did install the combo update for 10.12.5 (link below):

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1918?viewlocale=en_US

And I tried backing up again....and walla! No crashing for the first time! It took a while since it's my first time backing up to the external hard drive ever since I migrated, but it completed the backup!

My recommendation is give the combo updates a try and see if that fixes the problem for you.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mike-

Are you aware of any particular solution? I'm seeing drives disconnect while running CCC, as well as during Time Machine backups. Have had no problems with my 2016 MacBook Pro until I added a new LaCie 6Big Thunderbolt3 RAID drive, which is the only Thunderbolt3 device I have. If I daisy chain other devices from it, OSX crashes and restarts (CATERR). If I keep it on TB3 but don't daisy chain, I get driver errors and Finder crashes (other apps keep running, but I can't even **** down the computer normally). If I put the 6Big into its USB connection, all works fine. Only fails when on Thinderbolt.

Appreciate any lessons you've learned!

Thanks,
Greg

Hi folks,

CCC author here. I don't have a lot to add to this, except that we've also received a barrage of these reports from users with these new laptops. I'm hoping this is a USB driver issue, not a hardware issue, but that's a tossup at this point. It doesn't appear to be related to any specific file copier, though, so I'm not sure there's anything we can do to work around the matter while awaiting a fix from Apple.

It's imperative that everyone provide data to Apple that they can use to gauge impact of this issue – every engineering resource they spend is driven by impact. But before you open a support request with Apple, I'd recommend that you do the following:

1. Quit as many applications as possible
2. Reproduce the issue (i.e. run a backup task, copy files to the external disk, etc.)
3. When the system restarts, open the Activity Monitor application (/Applications/Utilities)
4. Choose "System Diagnostics" from the gear menu. This utility will take several minutes. When it's complete, the Finder will reveal an archive of the data that was collected.

The file that's generated is huge (173MB on my test system), so there are logistical issues getting it to Apple. Apple has ways to collect that file, but if you can toss it into Dropbox and present them with a URL, that might be easier and require less time on the phone with Apple.

Have the make and model of your attached storage device and any adapters handy as well, then open a support request with Apple (Twitter: DM to @AppleSupport, or https://support.apple.com/contact). Explain that you have a new MacBook Pro, that it crashes when copying files to an external device, and that you have a system diagnosis report that you can share.

And then let's hope that they have all of the information and impact they need to address the matter quickly.

Mike
