I returned my lg mbp, I believe all mbp have yellowish tint at the bottom. Even the lg's have slight slight yellow on the bottom that's barely tinted that its very hard to see but the samsungs are just a bit stronger in yellow. I did try calibrating using multiple different profiles I found on the net at least 5 different kinds. The colors did look good but I remember I liked the adobe 1998 the best being darker colors and vivid too but on this lg seems to be overly bright where the colors are just washed out from the brightness.. Also I remember when I had the samsung mbp the screen on it was so good that it made my 23" acd look like crap because the samsung panel being so vivid but now my 23" acd looks much much better and cleaner which didnt make anysense either..

You should calibrate using SuperCal. No profiles from the net looked any good on mine. All were very washed out. I calibrated and there is a lot of contrast and vibrant colors now.

Well some of the profiles I found on the net were calibrated by supercal, spyder 2 to name a couple. No matter how or which program you use to calibrate, the colors look washed out even when I calibrated it myself. Its just that no matter which colors you choose or calibrate its always going to be over saturated by the backlight. Also just the panel from lg looks weird using any of the 5 profiles it all had the same look to it, like the colors werent real or it looked fake pastel colored looking like really cheap.

I went to the apple store yesterday and checked out the displays they had on the floor and those 2 glossy and matte were 9c68 and they looked absolutely stunning. The glossy of course had alot of reflections but looks very very clean and sharp and the matte looked very smooth and I preferred the matte look. I checked the same background that I posted earlier both using the adobe 1998 and the colors looked darker and richer like it was suppose to look unlike the lg panel I had.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that since both apple stores were sold out of the mbp's 2.4 models 4 days ago, that I went to a compusa near the galleria and purchased a used mbp matte and it was too an lg. But the colors were washed out as well on it where the same problem, the brightness was too oversaturating, so I returned it and I thought the problem might have been the mbp being abused since it was an opened box display model that has been continuously on for 3 months since June.

I have to say that the lg model is very bad, some might like the overly brightness of it and the lighter colors it gives out but to me its like night and day difference and prefer the gorgeous samsung display. The pictures I posted earlier does no justice, in real life its so hard to focus on the colors or even black text, doesnt look sharp looks muddied and the colors look cheap and dull looking.

I talked to apple for about 6 hours on friday, and finally got somebody to put through a replacement order. well, i haven't gotten the email, so i called and now apparently that person was just lying to me. no replacement order was put through! i guess i am just going to wait as long as i can to replace it so my replacement comes with leopard.

edit: ok, so it seems i am CERTAINLY getting the email within 24 hours, and my account has some sort of flag on it so it has priority (but that's probably just made up). we'll see...

theman,
I had the exact same experience. The person I finally spoke with said that my replacement order had been entered, but not sent anywhere which is why I never received the e-mail. 30 minutes later I had the e-mail. I also am waiting because of the whole Chinese Golden Week delay in shipping and although a system with Leopard would be nice, I'm not holding my breath on it.

it may be possible that you get a discount on leopard if it comes out in 14 days... i think that is one of their typical policies isn't it? if you order within 14 days of a new release you get a very sizable discount? at least thats how it was for iLife 08...

I have received my replacement. Upon first bootup, I noticed
little bloches of yellow flashes here and there and no
obi-wan lightsaber 1/4" backlight bleed at bottom, so instinctively
knew I mas dealing with a samsung. Sure enough, I have
myself a week 39 matte samsung.

I have a very slight yellow bottom. It's not as bad as some
of the screens I've seen, but there none-the-less. There
is minimal backlight bleed compared to the LG I had, only
about 1mm band at top and bottom. I'd say the screen is
better evenly backlighted than the LG and much less washed
out looking, with better contrast and deeper blacks.
However, overall it still looks a little washed out to me.

So, I'd say everything about this display is better to my
eyes than the LG with the exception of the bottom
yellowing. Question is, can I live with it???

So now I've owned both an LG and a Samsung. Here's my
overall feeling of the two displays:

LG:
Pros:
No Yellow Bottom
Better Whites overall
Cons:
Really bad backlight bleed - 1/4" band of white at bottom
Really washed out colors

Samsung:
Pros:
Better Contrast (deeper blacks)
Minimal backlight bleed (only 1mm top and bottom).
Less Washed Out
Cons:
Very slight Yellow bottom

I'm going to use this for a couple of days and see how I feel.
So far I can tell I like it better than the LG since I don't
constantly see that 1/4" bright band at the bottom of the screen.
But, if I start getting those little flashes of yellow while
working on it, I know that's going to bug me and I'll want
to return it. If I return it, I don't plan on trying for
another as I feel I've gotten typical samples
of the two displays and there would be no point in trying
for another one.

people are still having problems with yellow screens? i picked up my matte screen MBP in the middle of september and luckily don't have yellow problems.

Yes, they are still churning out yellow screens, or if you consider
yourself lucky, overly washed out white screens with severe backlight bleed.

I have just just received my MBP 15'' matte screen, bought through Apple store.
My screen is a 9C66 week 39, at this point don't really know if it's a Samsung or LG, i ran LCDtest and there are neither dead pixels nor backlight bleed, but when i open the two images i can tell that there is a difference between the lower white square and the upper one, with the former clearly less bright than the latter, but not yellow that's for sure.
A colleague of mine has a MPB, don't know the week but her screen was a 9C68 and i could tell that the difference between the 2 white squares was more pronounced on her screen, maybe the lower was slightly yellow (but she never noticed that on normal daily use.
In general i have the feeling that the lower part of the screen (in particular the right corner) is less bright than the upper part, maybe tomorrow i'll try to take some pictures, but i don't know if this is normal or not since this is my first LCD.
A friend of mine has a MBP, next days i'll try to make some comparisons hoping his screen is a 9C67.
How do you guys calibrate the screen?

Wow, that's a 4th panel now, 9c67,9c68,9c6d, and now 9c66...
Wonder who makes the last two?

How do you guys calibrate the screen?

You can try Supercal: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8142

I don't know what other people are using.

I just calibrated my screen with Supercal and WOW, what
a difference! Colors just pop now, not at all washed out.
And gradients improved as well.
I did a real quick adjustment with no gamma correction,
so I bet it will only get better with a more in depth adjustment.
Yellow bottom is more subtle now too, looks more
'dirty' instead of 'yellow'. Probably because my whites
are slightly less white after calibration.

So I've had longer with the Samsung, and I would say
that the backlight is not even afterall. I get
some darkness about 1/4 of the way up (viewing
angle dependent).

One thing I've noticed about the Samsung over the LG is
I don't think the viewing angles are nearly as forgiving
(ie LG has better viewing angles). I think this may be
part of the problem - At a slight angle, I don't notice
as much of a yellow gradient if any, but don't have to go far
at all to notice a big difference. I'm talking about up down
angles now, not left right. I know everything will go
yellow at an off angle.

Anyhow, I will spend a few more days and see how it goes...

hey mandoman--- quick question when did you request a replacement?
I havent had an LG screen for comparison, but the Samsung I did have had the nastiest piss yellow screen, so I sent it back...
I think most screens if color configured right will be okay unless, its severe yellowing or severe backlighting issues which cant be resolved with color calibrations....

EEPS! I wish Apple would help with calibrations and try to explain the reasoning behind the screens...

I've seen LG notebooks- their screens are FLAWLESS, no backlight bleeding or excessive whiteness, they're like Sony screens (which I personally happen to like).

*sigh*

hey mandoman--- quick question when did you request a replacement?

I requested replacement on Sept 24 and received it Oct 3 for a 2.4 Matte
7200rpm CTO (week 39 Sammy).

I've seen 6 15"ers at Apples stores, 2 were super piss yellow you could
really notice Samsungs, 2 were barely noticeable yellow Samsungs,
and 2 were no yellow LGs. None of those 6 had the really bad backlight
bleed like I had on the LG I returned.

Are the glossy screens different to the matte ones?

Im going to be getting a Glossy one, but am I right its just a different coating and they are still the same screen behind?

:)

LOL, mac owners aren't the only one having the LG vs Samsung debate...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=135519

I went through two MBP's with yellow screens before I returned it. I then bought a 15" T61P (which came with an LG screen) and the thing was piss poor at color reproduction. A color spectrum looked like absolute crap. So I returned that and I'm going to be buying a MBP again. If it was a toss up between the mbp yellow samsung or the thinkpad lg, I would take the samsung in a heartbeat.

Well I am having the same issue with my Glossy Samsung week 38 MBP. I brought it in last week and they replaced the screen, but the new one is the same. So I have an appointment in 2 hours at the Apple Store. I don't know what I am going to do because the replacements have the same problem. It is so frustrating.

I am very tempted to return it and get a Thinkpad, but I like OS X enough to not do that.

Any opinions on how to get a good screen?

Please let us know what the Apple genius says.

Just received a week 33 refurb from Apple a few days ago, and it has the LG screen (9C67), looks very nice, brand new as far as I can tell. I was nervous ordering a refurb thinking that Apple might be sending the Samsung screens (that were being returned), back out as refurbs :)

I think it really depends on which Apple Store you go to and how accomodating the manager/Genius manager is. In the middle of the 14-day return policy, I brought my unit in to show them the yellowing, and she immediately declared it DOA, and offered to replace it right then and there, but they ran out of stock that day. Even though I'm way past the 14-day return policy now (I'm at school, and I've gone home twice to get this machine replaced and they still keep running out), the manager there is allowing me to return my MBP with the bottom 1/3 yellowing issue for a new MBP no questions asked the next time I come back home (which, amazingly coincidentally, will be on the weekend of the 27th). The only condition is that I have to take it back to the same store where I bought it from for them to honor it.

I really hope by then, most of the problems will have been flushed out, though I'm still disturbed by all I'm here here recently. And I might have to deal with another problem then: Leopard :D

Well, I just got back from the apple store, and the Genius claimed that he couldn't see the yellowing. So he said that they could send it to the depot where they would test it out if I wanted, and that would take 7-10 days. I said no because I think they would find that it was within specs, and nothing would be accomplished.

I looked at one of the display models on the way out, and the screen looked great. So I looked and it was LG model...

What really pisses me off is that they are making me feel like I am being unreasonable for wanting my display on this $2000 notebook to be uniform in color. I am now having to consider just living with it, or see if I can return it and get different laptop. I can't use a Macbook because I do 3d modeling, or I would get one of those........

Update:

I called Apple support and talked to a very nice gentleman who didn't seem to know much about...much. He claimed they were not aware of this issue. After catching him up on the issue, I asked if it was possible to get mine replaced with an LG screen. He said they can't do that, but if I sent it in for repair, he would "watch it all the way along" to ensure that it gets fixed right.

So I am not optimistic about getting it fixed, but I don't know what else to do. He said it would be 5-10 business days turnaround.

I am very tempted to return it and get a Thinkpad, but I like OS X enough to not do that.

If you really care about the quality of the display, you would not buy the Thinkpad.

BTW, I am not trying to be an Apple bigot here. I am currently writing this from my much-loved Thinkpad T60. However, most thinkpadders know that the Macbook/Pro screens are much better than the Thinkpad screens, especially in terms of colour gamut (my personal experience concurs with this). I don't know why this is -- they are both 18-bit screens, so not true colour (24-bit) anyway -- but it is. The manufacturers are even the same -- LG/Philips and Samsung make the LCDs for both Macbooks and Thinkpads.

Now there was a time when IBM/Lenovo did offer the magnificent IPS 15.0" UXGA 1600x1200 panel on the top-end T60p (and some Z60s I think), but sadly those days are gone (in the last year or so).

So if you actually care enough about colour reproduction to complain about the bottom part of your screen being a little yellowish, then I would recommend you don't switch to a Thinkpad as you will find probably find the WHOLE screen disappointing. Lastly, I think this probably goes for most Wintel laptop manufacturers.
