I tried clicking on the Mac part of the ad. I'm sure they're not tracking where the user clicks on the ad, and of course I was taken to a Windows landing page regardless. So I typed "I clicked on the Mac, why wasn't I taken to a Mac page?" into their internal site search. I sure no one will read it, but who knows...I thought it was funny.

Fine, give her $3000.00, require her to buy a 17" laptop and she what she buys.

If someone gave me $1000.00 and required me to purchase a 17" laptop in order to keep it, i'd go to Best Buy and get what I could for that 1k. I'd also smile say i'm a PC and give the thumbs up.

The point is, If i'm obligated to spend no more than $1000.00 and purchase a 17" laptop, I can't buy my first choice which is an Apple. Since it's free, i'll go get something else. Seems like the sucker is Microsoft for thinking this was a good add, and she got a free computer. If she doesn't open the box, it'll be worth more on eBay... Especially when she says "i'm the chick from the Microsoft commercial, buy the computer they gave me!) :D

BUT one thing people want is value for their money. It may be cheaper to buy a PC, but it's definitely not more cost effective than a mac. As stated in other comments, fixing hard drives, screens, failing fans, broken ports and taking off malware, cleaning the drives, etc. take time and money.
Wait what?

Combine that with the fact that the PC will be useless within 2-3 years, and she's just going to shell out another $1000 to get the new version of what she just bought, when she could have just saved herself the money and hassle AND had a much better experience with a better OS and better hardware by INVESTING in a mac. Any smart consumer sees a purchase as an investment rather than an expense. It's just plain 'ol consumerism and good ol' fashion business.
You don't invest in computer hardware.

You're much better off spending less on hardware than more every few years.

Well, there is also the fact that one runs Windows and the other runs Leopard. How about the trackpads? Do the PC laptops support multi finger zooming and such?

Multi finger support varies from notebook to notebook so I'm not sure if this one supports it. If my $200 WinXP netbook has that feature then maybe this one does too.

That's like giving people $10,000 to buy a car and then saying that since they got a Kia, it must mean that Audis and BMWs are overpriced

Great point.
And by the way that was the dumbest commercial I've seen in my life!

It's not just about reliability. BMWs are great performers and a sort of status symbol, even if they are a bit overpriced. I think the same goes for macs.

Exactly, let me also say that they are a bit overpriced but what they do offer (overpriced or not) nobody else pretty much does. Same with macs, i would ask anyone to get me AT ANY PRICE a great looking pc with unibody or a better os than os x? Can you? No. So the fact that apple charges a tad more for something no one else even sells is really irrelevant.

OR, and i know this confuses some people, they could KEEP DOING WHAT THEY ARE.

Apples marketshare has been growing year after year. Why do people keep saying what they NEED to do, when they are already doing what they need to do?

Dell did what they needed to do to fix their unknown computer brand in 1996, 3 years later they reached #1. How many years has it been taking for Apple to get out of the single digits in marketshare?

Until they actually start selling a decent amount of computers compared to PC's then they arent doing what they need to be doing with their computer department.

Apple should point out the ridicilious price for Office comared to iWork. If Microsoft wants to talk about price, why don't they lead by example and lower the price of Office, bloody hypocrites.
Office is whole $20 more expensive and can be used in a professional environment unlike iWork (the student teacher version, which has the same features as iWork). How is that ridiculous?

Combine that with the fact that the PC will be useless within 2-3 years, and she's just going to shell out another $1000 to get the new version of what she just bought, when she could have just saved herself the money and hassle AND had a much better experience with a better OS and better hardware by INVESTING in a mac. Even macs dont gain value as they get older, investing in a computer is like investing in Enron stock. PC's are not useless after 2-3 years anyways, my mom is still using an HP that came with Windows ME (its now on XP obviously) and hasnt been formatted in around 6 years.

Maybe your not cool enough

Lauren says it all when she states "I'm not cool enough to be a Mac owner"
:apple::apple::apple:

Putting a disk in and answering a few questions is tinkering? Me thinks you haven't used Linux lately. It takes far less effort to get a completely functional, secure Linux desktop than it does Windows.

I haven't used Linux since a SuSE distribution I tried setting up for fun a few years back. It probably has gotten better since then. Has the driver support improved a lot since then? The Vista installation process seemed pretty straightforward to me.

It's like the killer comment someone here made, they said they are putting bangbuss mentality in their marketing...it's really pathetic and sad...

and btw don't you guys find the whole mentality of the ad that you find a desperate person and throw them a couple of bucks their way provided that they buy a pc machine (cause ms wouldn't put an ad out had she chose a mac) crass, vulgar and degrading...only from classless people such as Microsoft would you expect that...so degrading...hey I had to get that free ride cause I couldn't afford it and ms made a beggar fool out of me in an add...horrible stuff...when we thought they couldn't stoop any lower

Learn from my mistake!

Three years ago, I purchased a 17'' Toshiba Satellite for $2000 thinking it was a better deal than a Macbook Pro. Now, Its a POS laptop that is worthless. Defects:
-Can't lay on flat surfaces or it turns off after five minutes (fans at bottom)
-Can't charge (battery out of juice)
-Slow, can't upgrade to Vista because of low specs.
-Many BSOD's (one caused by trying to uninstall beta IE6)
-Wasted much time and lost many irreplaceable files
-Crappy OS.
-Crappy fake silver paint on plastic
-Crappy plastic enclosure that is falling apart

Now, that Toshiba is a useless piece of junk that is the size of a bulky scanner and as noisy as a vacuum. Now, I have a alu 20'' iMac that has such a solid design and OS. I'm also saving up for a MacBook, because I learned my lesson, which is that laptops are meant to be portable and they should complement a desktop. It's obvious that the MacBook Pro, is not meant for your average consumer, it is meant for pros.

So, my advise to everyone looking for a computer is: If you want something portable for a competitive price and a better quality, go for the MacBook, or if you need a bigger screen, get an iMac. I assure you, you wont regret it. ;)

Nobody chose a Mac because it would not be free, a sub $1000 laptop with 17" screen can't be a Mac so nobody chose a Mac.

I wonder what people would buy if the criteria was a $2000 laptop or a sub $1000 silent mini-PC. Does a $1200 modern all-in-one PC even exist?

Back to Dell.com, a quick glance at their laptops gets me this for $2,100 (just $100 more than Apple's entry level MacBook Pro):

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.5GHz
8GB RAM
500GB HD
Blu-Ray Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Apple gets me:

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
250GB HD
DVD Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Close, but slightly more on the Dell.

When I bought my first Apple computer, before there were "Macs", Apple was a pretty big player in the PC game. I remember what it was like to have PC makers really compete against Apple (Microsoft laid low back then).

Apple got hosed.

I think this was the best commercial against Apple in 25 years. It hits on something that is true to life.

Think about the purpose of the ad: it is designed to make those who decide to buy the cheaper computer, because they can not afford a Mac, satisfied with their purchase. It also helps with parents who have to buy their kids a computer: 'see son, you get more when you buy a PC instead of a Mac'.

It is good marketing, plain and simple.

The "truth" has nothing to do with it. It's advertising after all.

Thats assuming that Apple wants to be Dell....which it clearly doesn't want to be.

I don't know maybe its me, id rather pay $1500 for a mac than a piece of crap dell for $500, itll just take me more time to save up (which is exactly what I', doing right now, waiting to ditch this POS toshiba)

Define "need to be doing".

They. Couldn't. Care. Less.

How is it, exactly, that iWork can't be used in a professional environment?

Not really, ubuntu is best there, but you are still going to have issues. That said it has improved much over say 3 years ago.

I have to be honest. I think Apple computers are overpriced. They really could use a system of two more under $1000.

Not even comparable to a few years back. Ubuntu (IMO) is the easiest to install OS out there right now, Mac included. Driver support is incredible, given the enormous level of hardware variables out there.

Easiest thing to do before buying a laptop for Linux is to check the HCL to make sure it's all on there (it most likely will be) then burn a disk, pop it in, answer a couple questions, and that's it.

Software is all just a download away.

the question is then do you want the best OS ever made or the piece of crap OS ever made known as Vista.;)

Ok... PCs are cheaper but... you get to run Windows...

Yeah, but Apple is sure leveraging a LOT on that OS of theirs.

I sure do wonder, how long can they can keep offering us faulty computers (screen lines, cracking plastic, faulty video cards) with limited options (only a glassy screen, no firewire on UMB), at their legendary high prices.

It's seems like they're testing us, how much abuse will we take before we abandon the OS that we love?!?! Maybe one day, they'll push us too far.

i love the apple kool aide effect in this thread
Duke, why do you insist on just coming into these types of threads and not making a point? Is it fun for you to just make inflammatory comments?

Guess what, some people don't mind paying more for a mac because they believe its justified, does that bother you for some reason?

She better declare that $699 gift from Microsoft to the IRS. I wanna see a video of that or a video of her not doing it and getting audited with a stiff penalty.
