Yeah, but Apple is sure leveraging a LOT on that OS of theirs.

I sure do wonder, how long can they can keep offering us faulty computers (screen lines, cracking plastic, faulty video cards) with limited options (only a glassy screen, no firewire on UMB), at their legendary high prices.

As long as they keep selling them, I think.

and after Microsoft runs these ads on price, what exactly will their next ads feature? Perhaps they should re-hire Jerry Seinfeld again to tell us?

Back to Dell.com, a quick glance at their laptops gets me this for $2,100 (just $100 more than Apple's entry level MacBook Pro):

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.5GHz
8GB RAM
500GB HD
Blu-Ray Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Apple gets me:

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
250GB HD
DVD Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Close, but slightly more on the Dell.

The casing is part of the hardware, if you falsely choose to ignore software as if it did not matter - while it's what really makes all the difference, at least add unibody to which not only dell, even sony or toshi can hold a candle to.

Duke, why do you insist on just coming into these types of threads and not making a point? Is it fun for you to just make inflammatory comments?

Guess what, some people don't mind paying more for a mac because they believe its justified, does that bother you for some reason?

wow, i cant comment on the fact that the ad is 100% dead on?

people trying to justify apple hardware is amusing as apple has a pathetic lineup.....

they will never see another mac purchase from me. they have simply priced themselves into the stratosphere

does it bother you i dont agree with the "pro apple" mentality at all costs that is way too prevalent in this thread?

Mac people are so arrogant they don't even recognize a dig against them. "I'm not cool enough" was obviously a sarcastic insult. And I love all the comparisons between BMW and Mac -- it's so shiny and pretty! Yeah, well Gucci shoes and BMWs are pretty, but I'll just step into my New Balances and hop in my Subaru and get a LOT more done for a LOT less money. You can sit and look pretty. I'm going snowboarding.

When I bought my first Apple computer, before there were "Macs", Apple was a pretty big player in the PC game. I remember what it was like to have PC makers really compete against Apple (Microsoft laid low back then).

Apple got hosed.

I think this was the best commercial against Apple in 25 years. It hits on something that is true to life.

Think about the purpose of the ad: it is designed to make those who decide to buy the cheaper computer, because they can not afford a Mac, satisfied with their purchase. It also helps with parents who have to buy their kids a computer: 'see son, you get more when you buy a PC instead of a Mac'.

It is good marketing, plain and simple.

The "truth" has nothing to do with it. It's advertising after all.

Apple got "hosed"? Where? Macs have never been so successful...and please don't compare it with the Apple // years, when serious competition was simply in its infancy...and I know what I am talking about, since my first computer was an Apple //e.

But you make a great point. This commercial is perfect to confirm what 99% of the world already knows: you are always able to buy CRAP with 1000 dollars.

Hey, I'm totally in agreement, I would pay a 100% premium for Mac OS X alone even on the exact same piece of hardware, I'm just saying that in the very broad view the ad takes, everything it says is correct.

It's one of the better ads I've seen Microsoft release, and I can easily see it working on at least a few budget conscious consumers.

I agree it will sway some consumers but I still think it's seemingly correct but ultimately misleading.

I completely agree!! Say one bad thing about apple and you get slammed on these forums.

iMac uses mobile computer parts it is not a desktop!! There I said it.

See above. That's not a Mac centric site. Some people make money from their computer and a more efficient computer makes more money.

Not saying lowered prices are bad, but
if you want lower prices, go for refurb!

In North America. Apple were nobodies in the rest of the world. Amstrad, Acorn and the like beat them.

granted they are over price but with my luck and geting cheap pcs have been the following

1 hp computer back when they first started the recovery hd thing got a nasty virus and couldnt even boot to that.
2. got a etower since the first pc i ever had was great well i had the emachine for not even 5 months and the mother board fries costs almost 200 to repair
3. got a very cheap compaq to hold me off till my refund came back and i had the hd they put in crap out on me right before i was able to get the mac

inbetween i had 2 macs one emac laster almost 2 years and my second mac is a second rev intel imac 2gh 17" model had that since and no problems since then.

and by the way i would never touch pcs as long as vista is the defualt opertating system on them.:D

It's seems like they're testing us, how much abuse will we take before we abandon the OS that we love?!?! Maybe one day, they'll push us too far.

And yet, go to any issue of consumer reports and you will find that Apple consistently rates as one of the highest is customer satisfaction, service, support and quality of manufacture.

Your statement could even more easily be used against any manufacturer in the PC world. And it's laughable that you mention the lack of firewire when that's a feature? that exists not at all on most PC laptops except as an option.

Ha Ha Ha :D That is so hilarious ! It makes me want to keep away from Windows and ugly PCs. As well, listen very well to her script, most of it is rubbish, but funny :p

Microsoft doesn't make the hardware

This is a major selling point for me with Macs: Apple makes the computers and the operating system. You know it's going to work. Microsoft is trying to compare its product on somebody else's hardware. How about comparing speed and stability if Vista's running under Boot Camp or Parallels? That's the comparison you'll never see MS do, but maybe Apple should make the case themselves. "Buy a Mac, run Vista faster than on a Dell, HP, Gateway or other major brand PC."

Also, you buy a Leopard upgrade with no confusion like the many flavors of Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate. Some programs will not run if you get the wrong version of Vista. Especially games, the main reason most people say they stick with Windows.

And, Mac OS X runs great in 2Gb RAM, even on a laptop. Vista can frequently run slowly on a laptop with 4Gb RAM.

Talk about comparing Apples and... squash?

An opportunity for Apple...

Factor in "user experience." Get a bunch of Lauren's in a room and tell them that, after using both computers for one hour each, they can have either the $999 Macbook or the $700 HP. I'm guessing a lot of Lauren's would walk out with the Macbook.

- The great thing about a Macintosh is you get more than what you wanted. You get everything you would ever need as a standard consumer.

Whatever, Lauren have fun with your Piece-of-Crap

+1 i thought exact same thing at the end, with a PC you get what you want but with a mac you get everything you want and the ability to use it functionally without crashing!
Also why is a software company using Hardware companies to brag that its better! they are saying that because its cheaper and you get the same specs (ish) its better, over looking the fact that you still have the annoyance that is windows!

It doesnt bother me that you dont agree, it bothers me that you basically call anyone who doesnt agree with you a sucker because their priorities are different from yours.

Buy a PC if you wish, but we are not fools simply because we prefer the Apple experience and can justify the higher price to ourselves.

You werent "merely commenting" you were merely insulting people.

Exactly, as per usual great post consultant. This was originally what drew me to apple silence for my environment at home and not some monster fan trying to cool a cpu while sounding like a helicopter.

Once again I find myself asking what the Apple ads were. This advert is quite hostile (although I do agree with it), but personally I see it as more effective than the Apple ads, which just seemed like immature attacks. This advert actually focuses on the crazy pricing of Macs at the moment - an issue many have frowned upon recently on these very forums.

The irony of this is Microsoft is attacking Apple for the price of its computers. Microsoft doesn't make computers. I can see Apple retaliating with commercials that point out how the cheapest Vista version is the same price as the only version of Leopard. iWork is cheaper than any single Office application. iLife is FREE on every Mac and blows the water out of the crappy knockoffs that Microsoft put in Vista.

Plus, that HP computer probably didn't come with any security software. Those bundles run you about $60-100 for virus and spyware protection, not to mention $20 or so a year.

Customer service surveys almost always have Apple at the top. The extra money put into R&D is apparently worth it. If you want a bag of hurt HP for less money, go ahead and do it.

I have to be honest. I think Apple computers are overpriced. They really could use a system of two more under $1000.

Why?

Until quarterly reports come out demonstrating that Apple is taking a major hit to the well-being of the company that is attributed to the cost of ownership, I see no need.

Why would a company want to attract customers who are most vulnerable to swings in the economy in terms of disposable income if they don't have to?

This is a poor analogy, but I am sure that if airlines could dump economy class and only operate economy plus, business, and first class cabins they would.

At this point, there is no need Apple to voluntarily add a class of product that competes on very slim margins.
