For those who dislike the new app switching: try taking your hands off the mouse and using the keyboard shortcuts. Shift + Esc pulls up toggle bar. From there, you can move between apps with the left and right arrow keys. Hit enter when the app you want is highlighted.

Overall, it's much peppier, and the app-switching saves me precious time. I'm not much of a mouse person anyway, though.

Finally someone defending the App Switcher. I like it to, the Shift+ESC then Left and Right Arrows make it good.

Mobile Me with 4.0

I tried to use the new app from my ipad to find my iphone that is running 4.0 (developers version i downloaded from the net). Doesnt work. It says my device is not registered. I have used it before with 3.0. I would of thought it would work but not totally surprised. Just interesting. My subscription is about run out in a few days and I am not planning on renewing. This didnt influence me, I just didnt use the service.

i'm having MAJOR issues with my mobileme. i can't login or even browse the web anymore after this switch. i'm getting pretty sick of Apple when they just jump into stuff without testing at all! Plus now that they're releasing this new iphone i GUARANTEE (that is NOT a rumor, guess i should post this on macfacts.com LOL) that they wont even have time to support this issue and fix it like they should. Thoughts??

Like most companies, those are two completely different divisions. There will be a set of engineers that are dedicated to the iPhone and it's satellite cloud of periphery support, and a totally separate set of engineers, probably in a different set of buildings, reporting to different management, that work on MobileMe. One of those sets of engineers can be slammed schedule-wise without impacting the other set.

In fact, most of the large companies I've worked for have distinct enough division of labor that different divisions are very often not acutely aware of what the other divisions are 'up to'. In a general sense, yes, but details, no.

So, I reject your guarantee. :)

No reason they can't have multiple icons, so mouse people like me don't have to do multiple clicks, and also have keyboard shortcuts for people like you.

It works for me. Did you install MM (mail account) on your phone and turn on "find my phone"?

New App Just a Gimmick

There needs to be a feature that would allow customers with a Family Pack to track each other. Naturally it would need to be optional and fully transparent, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be offered.

Without that feature, I just can't find any utility in this app. Obviously it's useless on my iPhone, and Find My iPhone is available on the iPad by using Safari.

So, what's the point? On the RARE occasion that one needs to locate one of their devices, why isn't Safari sufficient? Basically, this app is just feels like a shiny toy. Give us the ability to track others (with their permission) and we would have something useful.

That said, I of course installed it on my iPhone.

"Support for external email addresses (new since the beta). Reading all your email in one place is easy with MobileMe Mail. You can receive email from another service by having the email forwarded to your me.com address.* And when you reply to a message using webmail, you can choose to send it from the address it was sent to, or from your MobileMe account."

I got quite excited when I saw this, until I read the small print "*Check with your mail service provider to see if forwarding is supported."

I thought Apple where finally going to allow you to send emails with addresses other than your MobileMe addresses but I guess this isn't going to work with domain forwarded emails :(
You set it up with identities like other web based email. I tested it with mine and it worked great. Maybe I am missing your point.

No reason they can't have multiple icons, so mouse people like me don't have to do multiple clicks, and also have keyboard shortcuts for people like you.

Agreed. It's not perfect. (The idisk is a serious shortcoming.)
I use me.com all day long on my windows machine at work, so the faster interface is welcome. To me, anyone who wants to use his/her iphone for more than show needs the syncing that mobileme provides. It's a sunk cost for everyone commenting here anyway, and we'll all renew so that we don't have to sync basic data on our phones/pads with a cord for the next year... Apple can charge for it, so they do. I'm just happy that there's some investment. It's been a while.

Seriously, though, most mouse people can be liberated. Give it a shot.

Where's the OTA sync support for the iPad? All my macs & iPhones stay in perfect sync with notes from shopping list to much more important info, and my ipads are just left out of the mix (the only time I sync is when I need to transfer new movies or music.) It's such an oversight in my opinion does anyone else feel the pain?

the new app switcher is stupid!

Why "fix" some thing that wasn't broken!

two clicks to change for mail to calendars from one AND a ugly UI to go with it.

they could of added keyboard shortcuts with the main menu as it was!

new app switcher makes no sense at all. no matter how you look at it.

and come on, all the other apps look nothing like the mail, (rollovers, side menu etc.) what are they smoking. they took a nice complete product. and made it cheep!

i'm having MAJOR issues with my mobileme. i can't login or even browse the web anymore after this switch.

The login problem has been discussed already. Clicking on "forgot my password" and changing it to one without special characters like ç=/ solved the problem for me.

You can't browse the web? Now this does not seem to be related to the Mobile Me update.

The application switcher is absolutely ridiculous, if we have to have one button why not put all the icons in a hover menu over the button in the top left. We've gone from single click to any area, to click move the cursor half way across the screen and another click.

Same with flagging and marking functions, its changed from simply clicking in the flag column to selecting the email, moving the cursor across the entire window, click menu button then click the flag, mark or junk button. They've actually made the process to handle junk mail slower and more work, pathetic!

That is absolutely right, you are much slower with more clicks and moving your mouse to the selection.
For the ipad that is ok, but for a desktop with big monitor (not touch screen) you have to move your mouse.

I'd pay $99 for a family pack, but only if I could get rid of my domain hosting fees that I have to pay another provider. In other words, if apple got into the domain hosting business and truly let you use/administer your own private domain while enjoying all the features of mobileme (webmail, galleries, idisk, etc.). But since all you can do is set up a CNAME for your galleries and forward your mail, I still have to pay another hosting provider.

Plus the family pack is ludicrously limited to 4 or 5 members. Why have that limit? And with storage being cheap these days, why such paltry storage?

Seems to me apple can go one of two directions -

1) Make mobileme FREE and focused on making the apple devices you buy more usefel/connected. Kind of like another way to lock you in to the apple universe.

2) Keep the price where it is, but add full domain hosting, bump the storage up a lot, number of accounts/email aliases - so that it "competes" with real hosting providers, google apps, etc.

I know a bunch of people who'd pay $99/year for #2 b/c of Apple's superior webmail service, the nice galleries, and the other integration features (OTA syncing, etc.). But very few will pay $99/year just so they can get OTA syncing and nice looking webmail.

Still can't use "Find my i___". Can anyone else? I've tried from the new app, me.com on my Mac (Safari), and me.com on a Windows XP box (Firefox AND Safari). Truly stumped at this point! Feature is worthless if it doesn't work.

new interface is awesome :) shame I never really use the site.. hah.

and it's totally worth the annual fee, imo... great services.

Declare Independence from Mobile Me's $99 Annual Fee

Happy Independence day!

:apple: :apple: :apple:

I must admit that Apple's “Find My iPhone” is an awesome App. It has some great features that are double dipped in Apple’s sweet secret sauce of proprietary code that is not publicly available in their SDK. (with some good reason)

If you want the ability to wipe a phone from a distance you gotta pony up to Apple’s $99 annual fee for Mobile Me
…and depending on what pics you take with your camera, that money might be worth it. ;)

However, if all you want is the ability to find your phone, I suggest checking out some other really great third party alternatives.

We've built an app called “PleaseFind.it” $4.95 and gives you a lot of the same functionality. If you ever lose or misplace your iPhone all you need to do is log into PleaseFind.it (thats the URL) and the service will show you where it was last spotted.

It doesn’t have all the proprietary bells and whistles of “Find My iPhone” … but it elegantly handles the 'dude, where's my iPhone' usecase without eating up all your battery life. (we're a little bit clever about this)

…perhaps it's as good a day as any to declare your independence from MobileMe’s $99 annual fee to find your iphone

Full Disclosure: The $4.95 price is part of a 50% “yay we just launched promotion” + "Happy Independence from Mobile Me sale" that goes on for another week, after which time it will go back up to its regular price of $9.95.

I'm almost positive that this type of solicitation, although clever and funny, it's against MacRumors forum rules. Perhaps the mods can provide some clarification?
