What's wrong with some of you people here? Do you really expect Apple to just hand over Mobileme for free? If they do we will be graced with iAds. If they do ever make it free with iAds I would still pay if they had a version without ads.

I'm happy with the new MobileMe. I'm surprised more people don't like the application switcher. I definitely agree that it should be made more obvious what it is (there are various ways to do this), but I think it's nice that they're trying to harmonize the experience between MobileMe and OS X. I very much appreciate when they do this sort of thing between OS X, MobileMe, and/or iOS to make things a little more seamless; and the app switcher is appealing visually. I suppose they could offer an arrow with a pull-down-esque menu (like that of the account name on the right) as an option for those who don't like the app switcher.

I like the new Mail app; I haven't tested it out at length yet, but my initial impressions are positive. I hope they use this layout as a basis for the desktop Mail app in 10.7 (assuming there will be a 10.7...).

But I'll join the chorus of people who say MobileMe should be cheaper. I mostly keep it just because of the @mac.com/@me.com address, which is my primary personal email. [EDIT: Almost forgot about syncing, another major feature for me with MobileMe.] I don't agree that free would be good for MobileMe, since I think that would imply ads (as HLdan said) and/or data mining. But even considering this, $99 a year seems a bit steep for what you get. People who find it on eBay, etc. are getting a better deal at least.

I think Apple should offer a Find My Phone-only plan for very cheap or included with iPhone purchase at an Apple Store (physical or online), and the rest of MobileMe should either have its specs bumped up and performance improved, or else it should come down in price. The former seems more the Apple way, although the latter would be appreciated, too.

You've always been able to use any internet connected computer to use 'Find my iPhone', not just a Mac, you just log in to MobileMe and click on the link.

This new app is an EXTRA feature for iPhone users. I know it doesn't apply to most readers of MacRumors, but lots of people have "friends".
If you lose your iPhone, borrow your "friends" one, punch in your MobileMe details and Bob's your aunties live-in-lover, you can immediately see the location of your phone. You don't have to get to a computer to do it.

This could help you save a lot of valuable time in those first few minutes after your phone is stolen/lost and you can also remote wipe using the app.

Exactly. I'm not sure why people are having such difficulty grasping these facts.

MobileMe Sucks!

This service is a disgrace for Apple.

Dropbox, gmail, googledocs, etc are all free and work 1000 times better than MobileMe.

If Apple hired some decent engineers who knew how to design a cloud based service then they could lead the way. Instead Apple throws out a poor performing, poorly designed piece of c#*p and charges for it.

The mobile computing world is crying out for a great cloud based service to store digital data such as, music, movies, word docs, pdfs, powerpoint files, applications, photos, and various app docs. That way you could always have your media and data backed up, yet easily accessible.

I can't even used idisk for files larger than 50MB. It is so S---L-----O-----------W and never finishes. I can use Dropbox on files up to 2GB for free and it works amazingly fast and seamlessly.

The Itunes desktop application is now bloated, slow, clumsy, and has turned into a jack-of-all-trades application that doesn't do anything great anymore.

If Apple made a great cloud based site, then itunes could be eliminated and all purchases could be stored online and streamed or downloaded directly to your chosen Apple mobile device, ipod, ipad, iphone, or laptop.

Please Apple, stand up and deliver. MobileMe is a FRIGIN JOKE!

I'll stick with google sync for free.

Yes you will... right up until Google deletes your mail account with no explanation. Google what I'm talking about and read the horror stories. With a paid service, there is some accountability by the provider of said service.

Free? Well, you get what you pay for and you damn sure won't get ANY support from Google when they screw up.:D

Sounds like you were bit too when a spammer caught your GMAIL address.

This is why bought MobileMe. At least this way it's a paid service with a phone number to ask why. Besides it works great with my Macs and I just wish they would have upgraded the iDisk space, especially after the iDisk apps for iPhone/iPad.

I had another go at Apple's 60 day trial and I just cancelled it today, with a few days left.

No PHP? No MySQL? What is Apple's idea of a 'Contact Us' page or a website?!

MobileMe located my iPhone in an almost 10 mile radius here, in Hampshire? Good job, it's lucky that I haven't lost the thing.

This service is ridiculously overpriced and under-performing. For the same price, I can have all my websites hosted by a professional hosting company with a bunch of freebies thrown in.

Apple is subcontracting the service and I can imagine that they employ a 150% margin at least. But even at cost, this service would be overpriced for what it is.

I'll stick with Google. Too many free services out there are doing what MM can, but much better.

For $99 I'd expect Apple to be paying more attention to the service's bugs.

Problems I have with the new webmail, that I reported during the beta period and which are still present:

Does not remember view settings (Widescreen/Compact/Classic) nor interface position (where I've dragged the divider).

Does not allow accelerated scrolling (whereby scrolling faster scrolls proportionally more), and neither do the Page Up/Down nor Home/End keys work in any view.

This is with Safari 5.

Apple can release this 'Find My iPhone' app for both iPhone and iPad platforms but can't do the same for the 'Apple Store' app? Ugh... Is it so wrong to want the iPad to be treated as an equal to the iPhone?

I'm going to assume the reasoning is there is no need for an Apple Store app for the iPad since you can just use the regular site since the screen is so much larger. There is no Apple Store app for the Mac either.

Overall I'd say it's OK for an update, but the Gallery "app" seems to be funky. There are no scroll bars most of the time, (double) clicking on a group is intermittent, and most of the time the right hand column of images flows off the page... And this is with their new Safari 5.

Upon further testing, I see when first entering the gallery, if the group is showing the "poster image" then it will not accept a click. Only when you roll over the group and it is flipping through the images contained in the group. And not all groups seem to be loading up the images to make them up, so you're left to arrow-key around.

Yeah. It still needs some work.

Nitpick: why is the iCal icon the only one that doesn't have the reflection overlay? I guess they might say because it's depicting a physical object that wouldn't be reflective, but it still seems odd next to the others.

Has anyone else had problems logging into the new MobileMe?

I have tried my user name, username@mac.com, username@me.com and even resetting my password and I still get an error stating "incorrect userid or password".

UPDATE: Per CheapDude on page 5, you have to reset your password without special characters!!

i'm having MAJOR issues with my mobileme. i can't login or even browse the web anymore after this switch. i'm getting pretty sick of Apple when they just jump into stuff without testing at all! Plus now that they're releasing this new iphone i GUARANTEE (that is NOT a rumor, guess i should post this on macfacts.com LOL) that they wont even have time to support this issue and fix it like they should. Thoughts??

What's with the ridiculous application switcher? Now you have to click, move mouse to middle of screen, and then select one of the apps? What's the point of this "enhancement"?

Yeah, I don't get that either!
More clicks???
That's STUPID!:(

Dunno, I only have numbers in my password, along with letters, but no special characters, and I can't log in either.

Another awesome and smooth Mobile Me rollout.

I agree. The application switcher is ridiculous.

Worst of all, unless you are reading macrumors or another Apple blog, its completely undiscoverable.

Apple has a LONG way to go catching up with others in the internet applications arena.

all these brand new features for only $99.- per year! Isn't amazing?! :D

Mobilme Sucks ballz compared to other free services now.
I think they should just refund everyone's money ASAP who paid for it and then make the thing free.

Either that or maybe they can start charging for their web browser, etc.

RE: Cheap people

Just get the family version from Amazon for $100 and split it with your friends. Good for 5 people.

$20 per person/year is not bad. I like having the push on my phone which is the biggest reason I bought mobileme.

Another good feature is that it backs up contacts for you online.

I use the iDisk feature a lot for sharing files...sometimes it works better than email for large files.

But I agree for what we pay the service is a joke...

My mom has had two cases where they have been able to restore some email for her with just a phone call. We had paid hosting thru yahoo for years and couldn't get that done.

I love my .Mac email addy.... I'm not giving it up and wish i had another! LOL! I'm a mac not a me people :D

I still miss the bookmarks feature from the dot mac days. I don't like the layout of delicious.

And +1 for get rid of the application switcher.

App Switching is Good!

For those who dislike the new app switching: try taking your hands off the mouse and using the keyboard shortcuts. Shift + Esc pulls up toggle bar. From there, you can move between apps with the left and right arrow keys. Hit enter when the app you want is highlighted.

Overall, it's much peppier, and the app-switching saves me precious time. I'm not much of a mouse person anyway, though.
