You can shuffle playlists, but I can't figure out how to shuffle artists either if there are more than 2 albums for the artist. There is an option to turn off Apple Music in Settings > Music. Maybe you could try that to see if it restore some of the options you use--or possibly just removes the UI elements that irritate you.

I think the music app has been lacking since Forestall was sacked. It may have been too organic back then but it worked and was simple. A modern revision of that with this new junk would work fine!

Why do software developers feel they need to fix things that aren't broken, especially Apple. I hate the new player in IOS 8.4. Gone is the ability to shuffle an artist and playlist. I own all the music I want to play. I have no desire to subscribe to any music service, therefore I have no need for the features that drive that type of listening. Instead of adding this for the streaming listeners, they removed all the features that I loved about the Apple music player. I have taken out of my dock and replaced it with ecoute for now. If there is a better player, I am open to suggestions, but Apple's player sucks!

So you hate the new app because you think it can't do things that it actually can?

Shuffle playlist = There is a button at the top of the track list inside the playlist. (See first image)

Shuffle artist = While in Artist view (list of all artists) tap the icon to the left of the artist you want to play, once playing bring up the player control screen (the one that shows large album art and controls) tap the shuffle button on the bottom. (See 2nd + 3rd images)

(If you already have the shuffle activated in the player, for playlists you can just tap the icon for that playlist and it will shuffle without having to go into the playlist.)

The app will keep shuffle activated until you actually turn if off (it remembers if you turned it on and keeps it on till you decide to turn shuffle off) So if you like to always shuffle, you'll only need to just tap the art icons to shuffle whatever you want from any screen once turned on.

(3) Access to Now Playing is a skinny little ribbon at the bottom of the screen, not so easy to tap accurately under some circumstances.

I'm not sure that this is what you are looking for. But, try tapping that little ribbon. It expands into a "mini-player".

I used it to download my iTunes Match music to my phone & then tossed it into my "Totally Useless" folder where most of the other Apple apps reside--that folder gets bigger with every iOS update, but I never thought Music would end up in it.

That's funny it came OUT of my "Apple Crap" folder today. I stream music. It was useless to me until today.

One thing I really like so far about Apple Music is the emphasis on playlists. My "For You" tab has been pretty good so far and I've built a few of my own playlists. As I "heart" songs, albums, and playlists, my "For You" tab improves with better playlists, and I'm able to share those playlists with family and friends.

I've got a Five Finger Death Punch playlist for the gym and shared it to my little brother who is a couple of states away from me. He seemed thrilled by the playlist and was able to save it to his phone.

Since the music app is natively built into the iPhone, it's not like I have to convince people to download an extra app.

I'm impressed so far but I do believe it could be more fluid and less cluttered.

Side note: If you opened the music app for the first time and saw all your music gone, like my wife did, chances are its because the Show Available Music Offline is default to On. Once she turned that off, she saw all of her music again.

What were the steps for her to turn that off?

If people can't figure out this app, something is wrong. It is simple and not complex at all. Maybe people should use it for a few days before posting.
for instance the play button is super small and right next to the for you button. it's a terrible UI.

you aren't supposed to figure out apple apps, that's what made apple so special.

I know what it does, my gripe is how small it is to bring up Now Playing (maybe that's what you mean by "mini player"). More than once I've accidentally hit "Radio" right beneath it.

I find the For You tab useless, other than that, things are fine.
It becomes useful when you start "loving" a bunch of songs. It starts to have suggestions you might actually like ... or cool playlists you can add to your collection.

I agree. The usability of the new app is atrocious. I don't have any interest in apple music subscription, not even the free trial. I just want a stock MP3 player. Where did the genre/album/song tabs go? Where is the shuffle button? Where are the play controls? All I see is a pause/play button but no skip, back etc. What happend to the customization options for the tabs?

Any recommendations for a simple 3rd party MP3 player?

There is a shuffle button. The options won't slap you in the face, but they're there if you look for them.

Ok, thank you! That's one of the things I was looking for.

I believe the trick here is to pull the mini player up rather than tapping on it.

Guys I have a few questions. Even after 2 days I can't figure out how this Music App is supposed to work.
I mainly stream music but would like to make it available for offline listening because I travel a lot and sometimes not signal is available.

All I want to do is create some playlist and add songs to it. This playlist I mark as available offline BUT:
- if a add a new song to it it does not download it for offline listening
- it does not show up in the playlist. I have to first add it to "My Music" and from there add it to the playlist.

This is f***ed up! In Spotify it's so simple to do what I want but Apple makes it almost impossible.

Any help? Thanks

I just tried this and it works just fine. Try turning off "show music available offline first"

Since now Apple wants you to purchase streaming music subscription, the UI of the player will slowly become less friendly to us who are used to transferring music the iTunes way. Every inch of Apple will reek of monetisation. If a particular UI or iOS action prevents potential revenue generation in any way, it will be altered or even culled.

Every company will do this. Soon we would have to jailbreak just to play our own music on our own iPhone. This seems like an exaggeration but that day is not far.

It is turned off...

That is so strange.
I have deleted all playlists and still it's not working.

1. Create playlist
2. search for a song
3. add it to playlist

It does not show up. Only after I first add it to my music and from there I add it to the playlist.

4. mark the playlist to play as offline. The songs already in the playlist get downloaded. Any other song added to that playlist is not available for offline play. Only if I go on the song and mark it for offline play it will...

WTF is this? Do I do something wrong?

What a totally stupid, unthought place to put the play/pause button.

It's impossible to use one handed and 50% of the time I press the awful "for you" page.

Is you search hard on the uploaded screenshot you just might see it!

i cant see anyone in my family understanding the interface to be honest lol even i dont understand it really. i dont even see a way to add songs from apple music directly to a playlist. do i really have to add them to my music first and again from there onto a playlist? and OMG the "New" tab is a mess and has almost nothing to do with new. yes lets just throw everything that fits nowhere else in there.

back to Spotify soon i guess
The 3 dots on the bottom give you a list of options to apply to the song Including add it to a playlist. What annoys me is that you can't create a new playlist from that menu.

If you add it to a playlist is should show but will only download if you tap to make it available offline.
