On a serious note, why the crying about the design? As mentioned, most of the changes from here out will be hardware/software. Look at Android phones - they haven't changed much since the first ones, either. It just seems like it because there are 100 variants of them.

I like the design of the 4s. I like these images of the next iPhone, too. There are only so many exterior changes you can make to a rectangle with rounded corners. And it seems many of the same people who complained about the 3.5" screen are now crying about the 4" screen.

Frankly, I'd like to see hardware updates, more iOS updates, as they're doing (Maps, Passbook, etc) over a damn external change any day.

So what happened to the "underpaid Chinese workers who couldn't take a high res photo because they are frisked and have to sneak a small crap camera and take sneaky fotos"?

Looks like the dude had all the time in the world, and a quiet room, to make a video. What about the big circular black reflection? Is that a SLR camera lens??

Unless Apple introduce some seriously interesting hardware or new features, I just cannot see myself upgrading this year.

I don't want or need a larger screen and aside from the size, it's hardly a significant change in design such as from the 3GS to the 4. The extra row of apps or a larger screen for movies/games isn't the kind of breakthrough I was hoping for after last year's incremental update.

Yeah, one thing people need to get in their heads (god only knows how they will), is that eventually, there will be very little to absolutely no design changes in the phones. There is only SO small, thin, and light these phones can become.

I don't get why this is considered a dumb thing to point out. My post was straight up deleted so apparently that's taboo to mention here, but you'd think a site supposedly about "mac rumors" would know better...

Calling it "the next iPhone" or "the new iPhone" would just be too hard, I guess? It's asinine.

Not like any of the other comments here are any more insightful anyway.

I can't speak for the moderation team and their efforts, but I can say that there has been a decent amount of flaming and trolling that has occurred around the topic. I'm sure they are attempting to be proactive.

As any topic goes, I don't think it is a silly debate to have, but I do think that there is a certain logic to continuing a numbering system that people are familiar with. To a typical end user, the generation of a device is not something they care about or even understand at a technical level. All they really know is that there was a 3 variant, a 4, a 4 variant, and now ___? I'm not sure "6" makes sense there.

Either way, you could be exactly right that they will go with "the new iPhone" moniker as they did with iPad to eliminate any numbering system. We shall see...

If all you care about is looks, fine. Most of us actually judge a phone by how it works, not just superficially on its outer dimensions and color.

That's my point, son. Give me functionality any day of the week. I'll be waiting, but doubt there's any reason to dump a 4S for the new model.

Wrong. There was never a 3.

I wonder if they will offer the split keyboard option in landscape mode. I just discovered that on my iPad and it makes a WORLD of difference.

It looks the same to me. Doesn't look like the width of either the screen or the bezel has changed.

Sorry - I meant the top and bottom. Looking at the purported new iPhone next to the 4S, the top and bottom areas of the bezel on the 4S appear more 'substantial' than normal.

If this really is the new iPhone, I'm looking forward to upgrading in a few weeks time.

RTP.

Why longer?

I guess I don't really understand the advantage of making the phone longer.

How does this help users? The extra screen real estate will be incredibly minimal, and we'll have to deal with a longer phone.

Any predictions on what the new screen resolution will be?

Current is 640x960 (1.5:1), so it's not really 4:3/16:9/16:10 at all.

A perfect 16:9 aspect ratio phone means the new resolution would be 640x1137.77... not sure if this really makes any sense.

16:10 would be 640x1024 - maybe they are headed in that direction? Either way we are only talking about around a 5%-10% increase in screen surface area.

It *is* out of proportion. The aspect ratios are clearly different. It would be noticeably wider if the proportions were the same.

And I agree with the "ugly" camp. It's too tall.

16:9 is not some made up proportion. It's only out of proportion from previous iphones. There are no wrong or right screen dimensions.

Wow, it does look freakishly tall. Not liking the design at all.. yet.

I would have prefered it if the height was the same but had a wider screen.

not bad

The flood of part leaks claimed to be for the next-generation iPhone continues with a new report from Nowhereelse.fr [Google translation] pointing to a fresh set of high-quality photos and a video of an assembled front panel similar to the one that appeared earlier this week. The new photos and video come from Chinese parts distributor SINOCET.

While the part isn't a new leak, the photos are of good quality and one shot in particular shows a front-on view of the assembled front panel next to the same part from an iPhone 4S, making clear how Apple has been able to minimize the overall increase in device height by shrinking the top and bottom margins somewhat to compensate for the impact of the taller screen. The height comparisons have been seen in previous leaks, but this new photo seems to shows the most straightforward comparison yet.

The video in the report also focuses on comparing the next-generation iPhone front panel assembly to the corresponding part from the iPhone 4S.

its not that big you wont be able to tell after one week of use

Something doesn't add up here.....

There's a conflict here.....

Is the "new iPhone" allegedly WIDER or NARROWER than the 4/4S?

The pictures from this article make it look narrower. (http://www.sinocet.com/The-new-iPhone-5-front-panel-part)

The picture from earlier this week (https://www.macrumors.com/2012/08/28/scosche-already-designing-new-dock-connector-accessories/) shows it WIDER.

...and I don't think the difference is due to the bezel/unibody.. it seems too great.

So, ONE of these is definitely wrong!!!
