new headphone location on phone

so if the headphone dock is at bottom of the phone now, how would you be able to have your earbuds in the phone while the phone is sitting in a dock charging?

Edited my post for truth, but it really doesn't alter the point of how people intuitively count in a linear fashion.

I don't think people typically count from "3G" to "4". However, they do count the number of iPhones... this will be iPhone 6.

If anyone had an iPod Touch (2nd generation) they understand that the size of it was good to hold in the hand. So why is it that the iphone 5 or whatver its called, could be made slighlty bigger to the dimensions of the ipod touch with increase screen size to 4inches with enough bezel to not bother the user.

I still think it looks out of proportion and weird that way. It looks more proportionate with those stick ipod nanos I dislike which I hate the feeling of in my pocket cause being narrow and tall I always feel if I bend my leg too much or sit down and they get position wrong, they'll snap. The iphone would be worse cause it's longer so it's definitely going to get pressure if I sit or even walk and it will stick into my leg. And I'm not going to wear baggy pants just for a phone, I like my jeans. They're not super tight but they aren't baggy either. That being said, my phone will mostly reside in my purse thankfully (and hopefully it will fit cause my purse is already packed tight. I agree with some one else, when you're talking about a device that people put in pockets or need it to be able to be easily carried, that's not a small increase).

I wish they'd stayed with the 3.5" screen. It's not enough to chase me away (especially if they put in a decent increase in performance like another rumor on here) but it's not something I'm honestly happy about.

Yeah, one thing people need to get in their heads (god only knows how they will), is that eventually, there will be very little to absolutely no design changes in the phones. There is only SO small, thin, and light these phones can become.

Exactly. iPhone design is becoming more like Apple's computer design –– smaller refinements over time. The MBP and iMac have essentially remained the same for the past 4/5 years. I think the iPhone will see only smaller refinements for a similar length of time. Radical redesigns will only happen when new technology becomes available (i.e unibody tech in 2008 MBPs.)

You won't be able to. The dock connector only has 9 pins, suggesting that the A/V is gone new docks will have to use the headphone jack for audio.

I use a cable to charge, so I'd have complete access to the headphone port, but I imagine, some new docks will have an audio out/passthrough and there was some kind of adapter prototype posted that had phono + dock connectors that would connect at the same time.

You guys have been looking at it wrong the whole time. That is the regular iPhone 4s next to the new iPhone mini. Green color will be limited edition.

The sixth generation iPhone is commonly referred to as the iPhone 5. Get over it people. The marketed name of the phone will likely be the new iPhone.

Where are the dudes who keep insisting these are "strategic leaks" and the real thing will look nothing like this?

Misinformation is one of the most effective way to keep something secret!
Intelligence Agencies have been doing it for years.
Apple has over 100 Billion Dollars on hand.
Do you really think they couldn't afford to keep this secret if they wanted too?

You can't. It seems people don't know how to carry the iPhone in a pocket so they had to move the headphone connector - and in the process making the bottom look like a giant mess.

Unless Apple introduce some seriously interesting hardware or new features, I just cannot see myself upgrading this year.

I don't want or need a larger screen and aside from the size, it's hardly a significant change in design such as from the 3GS to the 4. The extra row of apps or a larger screen for movies/games isn't the kind of breakthrough I was hoping for after last year's incremental update.

What breakthrough, especialy with hardware, were you hoping for that you're not seeing?

I like how everyone says it looks weird. You literally can only perceive it looking weird because it is sitting right beside something you have been used to seeing for so long. If it were just a picture of the new iPhone your head would not be telling you it looks weird.

i fail to see the advantage of a taller but not wider screen, and i know this has been argued to death

u wont even benefit much in regards of reading and omg i wont be able to use it with one hand booohooooo

I know when I think about devices, I always count in the back of my head how many there have been when identifying a unit.

It is a marketing term and nothing else. They will go with the simplest form possible that will be logical to people based on the information they have readily available, which may end up being "the new iPhone" rather than any number.

Apple had their chance to get on board with a sequential numbering system that matched the device generation with the 4s and they chose not to. I have no idea why you think they'd change their mind now.

Either way, I can't believe I was drug into this ridiculous discussion after attempting to quell it with my original post. We'll know who is right in a matter of weeks.

i'm looking at going back to android because the screens are really bigger, not just longer

i rarely talk on the phone and a bigger screen is easier to read. the galaxy note 2 looks nice

apple seems to be going the way of henry ford. staying with their original idea and not catering to anyone else. and the idiotic product segmentation is not going to make me buy multiple products just to get what i want

I was feeling a little unimpressed before. But this just looks down right sexy. With the aluminum back it's going to be even sexier. Yes, some gadgets are sexy. I said it. :)

This is a strategic leak, I'm telling you! The real thing will look nothing like it!

*Stares everyone down with a wild look in his eye*

Yeah, but the intelligence agency doesn't have thousands of random asians and brazilians making products for them. Doesn't matter how much money you have, the more people (especially random) that know about it, the harder it will be to keep it a secret, and I'm sure they are making more of these than any previous device in their history, making it even more likely to be leaked.

To everyone asking or if the home button is smaller...

Yes, it is. This is old news, its not any sort of optical illusion.
