New Photos Indicate Previously-Thought NFC Chip in iPhone 5 is Earpiece Speaker

I would have thought the Passbook feature coming in iOS6 would work great with NFC. I'd say either the new iPhone will have NFC, or Apple have worked out a different way to do these kind of transactions - maybe so they can take a cut of it?

I hope not though, there's enough proprietary stuff on the iPhone that's simply to make more money for Apple rather than being good for the customer e.g. incompatible Bluetooth, expensive connectors rather than micro-USB (about to change to another one it seems), no memory card expansions etc. I expect these restrictions do push some customers to Android.

Forget the earpiece ...

... could they please improve the mouthpiece speaker? I've had numerous people complain about the sound quality when I call them on my 4S -- and I had it replaced once, same problem.

This is fake.

Apple doubles down on security, yet every RUMOR website has purported photos of the new iPhone...riiiiiight.

iOS's Bluetooth capabilities have been limited in the past, but they're opening up the entire stack to developers in iOS 6 with Core Bluetooth. Combined with the advanced Bluetooth chip that's likely to be in the new iPhone (supporting Bluetooth 4.0 low energy), the iPhone will actually have the best and most compatible Bluetooth implementation available by far.

Right. Since micro USB is a really great connector that does everything and is super convenient and never breaks? And theres no Android phones that use proprietary connectors?

Good grief. People, it is entirely possible that a woman might actually be involved here.

And for the record, I'm a girl, my fingernails are about that long, I never wear nail polish, and one of my nails broke this morning, so while it is filed nicely, it is shorter than the others.

Sheesh.

Disappointed it won't have NFC because that would have been the big new way of using my phone type feature, but the iPhone5 still represents a huge upgrade from my 3G so I'll be going for it - I don't need a new phone every year to give my life meaning, nor a radical redesign to hold my interest. It'll be a damn fine bit of kit.

It's a bit worrying that hardly any of you seem to realise women often have longer fingernails than men.

It's also worrying that I'm posting a comment about fingernails on macrumours...

Agreed, I really think most of the leaks are marketing tools to hype up the launch of the next iPhone. Just like the shadow of the 5 in the invites, I'm sure apple has read all the rumors and used that to boost interest.

Is NFC integrated into that many products right now??

The truth is, as much as NFC is a buzz word among new tech, especially for "geek ware" like the Nexus 2 phone, NFC still has a long way before getting off the ground.

Companies are still fighting over the standard in payment (much the same as the old Mondo vs. Monster vs. Interac vs. Visa vs. Mastercard fight when it came to debit cards) and retailers are wary to get involved with NFC until a standard is met. In fact, many are reluctant to invest money into something a bank will just offer for free in the future anyway.

Without a standard, NFC is simply a nice thing to boast about to technophiles.

So...an NFC radio has been confused with a speaker?

Methinks the rumor guys are a bit off this year.

I've been an iPhone buyer since the beginning, but if the iPhone 5 doesn't feature an earpiece speaker, I'm washing my hands of it and getting a Blackberry or a Nokia.

Just got tipped by a friend from Verizon that it'll be released on the 26th instead of the previously assumed 21st.

No NFC is a positive for me as it is one less thing to drain the battery even quicker.

I've had NFC on one of my credit cards for over a year now and have used it exactly never...

A few more than 75, but yes.. Apple is getting left in the dust. The phones have been progressively getting more and more underwhelming.

(Not being a smartass) Would you or someone please list off the things other phones have right now that would make the next iPhone look like it is behind in technology. Just based on the leaks of course. Thanks:D

Makes sense actually... That it's off center, because the camera module needs more space than just the lens. That's why they placed the speaker off center. You can't do that with a camera.

We will see soon enough.......woohoo

After the events yesterday,I don't see any to pull me away from iPhone. (although the new lumina 920 looked pretty good).

I actually like the 820 better and will be picking that up as my second phone.

That's it. The new iPhone obviously doesn't come with a fingernail clipper/file, so it's an S3 for me. I can handle many things, but a taller (but not wider) screen and no fingernail clippers?

F off, Apple. You are dooooooommed

Yep. One of my clients is a national chain of restaurants mostly franchises. Getting owners to do anything is like pulling teeth, even when it’s free. When it comes to things that cost money? Forget about it.

Mobile payments are definitely the future, but I have my doubts that NFC is the solution; it seems little more than a minor upgrade to existing credit card readers. I thinks it’s something closer to what Walmart and Apple are doing.

I think you are greatly underestimating how useful NFC can be and how widespread it is outside of the United States. Just to give you an example: NFC is used in multiple European counties for the public transport (think about a bus, train, metro, etc.).

In Asia it is used for even more things. It's really the US who is lagging behind in this case.

Sheesh.

It's a guy.

A friend of mine does indeed know the fedex guy's cousin, who is a neighbor's girlfriend of long nails, who saw him at his apt. snapping those shots.
