Why? We know what the iPad 5 will look like.
With all the case leaks, even in high resolution now, we know exactly what it will look like but there are still a few unknown fine details regarding the specification.

For me the big missing pieces that I'll be listening intently for (or, more accurately, following live blogging to read) are:

- Exactly how much have Apple managed to reduce the weight? Exactly what will it weigh?

- Have they managed to fully preserve or maybe even improve battery life? This is probably mostly down to how much power saving they've managed to get from the screen by moving to a single LED backlight and the iPad mini screen technology.

- What will be the entry-level flash storage capacity? Will it be increased this time around?

- Will pricing be the same or will they edge it up a bit? I can't see it coming down.

Other details that will be somewhat interesting to spec followers of the type found on this forum but don't really matter to the general public are:

- Will it go up to 2GB of RAM?

- How will the GPU be different to that found in the A7?

There are still enough unknown details to make the 22nd interesting for the iPad 5 alone.

Personally I'm more psyched about the new iPad Mini. I bought one for my son last year and the form factor is an absolute delight to use, in my opinion, and my iPad 4 just feels a bit too big in comparison. Plus a Mini causes less damage when he accidentally drops it on his face...

If Apple puts an A7 in the iPad Mini, I'll be very interested. If they put a retina display in the iPad Mini...

really looking forward to this event. should be the event of the year! :apple:

Me too. The iPhone event was anticlimactic. We all expected iPhones and that's all we got. Can't fault Apple because that's what they had to announce. At least they kept it short.

This one promises all kinds of things from new form factor iPads to multiple updates to Macs. I sure hope Apple live streams this one.

True, however I was more or less referring to the line-up of iOS devices...
What kind of surprises do you expect? Its a tablet, it has a front with a screen and a back with an Apple logo. There is not much to design. You can reduce the bezel, make it thinner and lighter, replace the dock connector, change the edges and buttons and alter the metal finish. All which has been done in the last three years. And on the inside, retina displays, 64-bit cpu and iOS 7. Even the instruction set with which apps are compiled has changed. What more could they do?

It's not what they did that's insufficient, it's the fact that we knew pretty much everything about it before any official announcement. Pretty much the only thing we didn't know about the iPhone 5s was the fact that the CPU was 64-bit and was ~2x as fast as the A6. Everthing else we knew. (Touch-ID, slo-mo camera, gold color, etc..)

But those kinds of leaks are, unfortunately, pretty much unavoidable, since Apple starts production before the announcement, whereas with the Mac Pro they announced before starting production, hence taking everyone by surprise. But it does make Tim Cook's statement that they're doubling down on security look a bit ridiculous.

I suppose it depends on where one's interests lie. For me it's almost become more interesting in design terms, certainly no less interesting, now that the big changes have been made and we're on to seeing how much the basic design can be optimised in terms of minimising size and weight and maximising battery life while maintaining the 9.7" screen size.

It's not a flashy new feature such as Touch ID (although come to think of it that's one unknown detail that I completely forgot to mention in my last post) but getting the weight and size down without compromising the functionality is still a huge design challenge that potentially impacts every single component within the device and I find it very interesting to see just how far a massively well resourced company at the top of its game can go in terms of pushing the boundaries.

You do understand these are controlled leaks? They leak to tech sites not yo the masses. The 64bit did leak a wee before the event.

The next feature I want to see in all iOS devices is the base model storage becoming 32GB.

The lineup should be 32, 64, 128.

Also the Macbook Pro should a get Fusion Drive as standard, at least until SSD drives get cheaper.

I seriously doubt that apple would have the silver and white model
with a back BLACK apple logo.

Since the logo was not black for the white and silver versions of iphone 5, ipad mini and iphone 5S...

iPhone has antennae on the outside of the device, on the iPad the Apple logo is a plastic window for Wi-Fi signals. Two entirely separate situations.

Using two different materials and trying to get them the same colour, as you seem to want, will never produce the desired result, hence why black (a different colour to the surrounding material) would be the better choice.

Actually it was UnboxTherapy. Really looking forward to the iPad 5... I just know I'll have to wait some weeks before the LTE version, Apple normally takes a couple of weeks to ship them..

Do not know why someone would buy the iPad5; but I guess they have to start with that size and move down like me!

Better have equal or better components inside it then the iPad5!

The iPad 5 will have all the bells and whistles compared to the Mini..

A7X w/ 64 Bit
2GB Ram (Possibly)
Touch ID

I doubt the Mini will get those features, I for one... Will be getting the iPad 5.

Hmm. Thinking about it, I think the transition to 64-bit will be a lot like the transition to the lightning adapter, i.e. across the board, because they want all devices on common footing with one another.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw in a prediction that the new iPads and iPod Touches will all have 64-bit A7s. They may not put a retina display in the iPad Mini, though, eliminating the need for a more power-hungry A7X processor, saving lots of battery life. That remains to be seen, though. But for now: 64-bit A7s across the board.

Can someone explain why features have to be withheld from the mini? Is it all financial? Apple has never positioned the 9.7" iPad as a "Pro" device or the "premium" device compared to the mini. In fact, the 9.7" iPad is taking its design cues from the mini. This is completely different than the iPhone where the 5S and 5C have different designs.

So I'm at a loss as to why features would need to be withheld. Really the only difference between the full size and mini iPad now will be the screen size. In terms of features what does the full size iPad have that the mini doesn't (besides retina)? Nothing. And something like Touch ID almost makes more sense on the mini which is a more portable device and people probably carry it with them more than they do the full size iPad.

If Apple really wanted to upsell people to the full size iPad wouldn't they have made the mini look like a less premium device?

If I'm not mistaken the A7 has quad core graphics.

I just hope they have stock at launch. I'd like to pick one up for my next trip. But I don't want to cut it too close.
You can be sure I will not be ordering from the online Apple store. No not even for free engraving.

Does anyone know if it will be elegant, sexy, magical, and delicious? If it is Please take my money Apple...

According to my sources, it will be elegant, sexy, magical and extraordinary. The next version will be delicious. They have to save something for the next iPad 6. Plus, I hear they are having trouble getting acceptable yields for the new deliciousness. Hope this helps you make your buying decision.

and what of the 5c?
