On the MSNBC website a few days back there was an Asian video review. She weighed the ipad 4 on a scale at 1.4 pounds, while the ipad 5 weighed in at .92 pounds. I watched her actually put the devices on the scale one at a time, so I have no reason to disbelieve this video. I was shocked--and delighted--at the weight difference. Hope this is the real deal, although I have no way to verify. It appeared to be a legit news story, however, not some home video.

If this is true, I might buy one just for this reason alone. While I've never thought my iPad 3 was all that heavy, I'm not about to scoff at something that's both considerably lighter and more powerful.

Plus, now that I've played around with a Mini, I've come to appreciate how much more comfortable a lighter device is to use.

Sorry. Scratch that earlier post. I just chased down the video again on MSNBC to refresh my memory, and she was only weighing the respective _cases_ of the ipad 4 and ipad 5. The weight differences in the _cases_ was 144 _grams_ (ipad 4) vs 92 grams for the ipad 5. At least the cases appear to be lighter. No further info on the innards, though.

There wont be touchid on ipads for now...

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

None of the OTHER Apple employees will risk losing their jobs to give us this kind of info DEFINITIVELY. We are all stuck here on this rumors site, discussing rumors & only guessing at facts. It is SUPER rare when we get to meet somebody with the honest truth.... handed down by God herself.

It might only be an optical perception but I can swear the black iPad front bezel looks a tad thinner on its side than the white one.

I really surprised Apple hasn't switch to USB 3 lightning cables for the iPhone 5(S&C) and most likely won't with the next gen iPads.

That's something huge to want.

It's almost 2014, bro. This is NOT something huge.
Lol... are you seriously syncing data... HUGE amounts of it... all the time?
SO much data that USB 2 is slowing you down??
If so; count yourself one in tens of thousands.

Where is the whole thing? It seems that the screen supplier is much more tight lipped than the case maker.

I don't get your point, seems contradictory. Yes this is almost 2014 in which USB 3.0 is so cheap and common. So why not implement it at the first place?

Whether you use it often or not it depends on the user. But USB 3.0 ensure optimum data transfer and should be standard by now.

Umm... the point is.
In 2009. We synced our phones. We do NOT now. Mine, my family's & my friend's backups are months if not years old. (as I recently noticed when I was just updating everybody to iOS 7) I mean, iCloud works.... we all use Pandora, Spotify, or iTunes Radio.. we may have small handfuls of files..... but, for the most part- we just don't.
Also, these devices are REPLACING our computers. My mother, who is almost 60, turns on her PC perhaps 10% as often now as two years ago when she got her 1st iPad. What would drive us to be plugging in these devices to our PCs..? It just doesn't happen.

Oh so you were talking about post PC and cloud services. Well yeah maybe our iPad replaces our PC more and more everyday.
Sure it works well if everybody can have reliable network to support it.

Not everybody can enjoy 10Mbps+ connection to maximize cloud benefits. When our internet is slow, cloud syncing and backup would take ages while the good ol' cheap iTunes sync and local storage is reliable solution for most people.

I love movies, renting and buying movies is practically hobby. I wish cloud works but I just don't have a reliable connection for seamless experience on iTunes Movies. I wish I could click buy and enjoy the show immediately. But no, a typical HD movie takes 3 hours to download with my connection, so for the same $20 I'd rather buy physical disc with Digital Copy if possible.

I must say although I will be updating my iPad, I find it hard to be excited by apple launches anymore.

The new iPad is a tweaked old iPad. The new iPhone is a tweaked old iPhone.

It would be refreshing to know another game-changer product was on the horizon... Oh well.

Agree. The saddest thing is that when Apple do this evolutionary upgrades people say it is a "good" or even a "great" update, but when another company improves the CPU and GPU (x3), storage speed (x2), screen (x2), cameras (x5), external design, size, software, battery life, accesories, etc of their tablets, then it is a "small change" and even "lame, try again looser". Double standars? It is not helping to make Apple stray a little bit of the safest path.

Also, many people like you (and I) feel the iPad has stagnated, but when other companies introduce something different (and better in some areas, such as multitasting, office productivity, storage expansion with microSD, connecting many kinds of USB devices directly or using it on a table) most of the people just make deep "one minute reviews" saying things like "doomed", "frankentablet" or "there is not a single thing is this product worth one dollar". I mean, overall you can like or dislike the product, but it is obvious that there are at least a few interesting ideas and some improvents over an iPad.

PS: yes, I was talking about MS Surface 2, but I didn't want to use the name bacause many people will just read it and their eyes explode and their heads start spinning in irrational hate, like if their beloved iPads were going to stop working because MS did release a competing product (altough they claim it is so bad that it is not a competitor at all, so why they care so much to hate it? :p

The speed of the internal storage on iPhone/iPad is slower than USB 2.0, so the bottleneck is on the device side.

Weird that there isn't a sign of Touch ID. I thought that's why the iPad 5 was pushed back so far. It was already leaked at the beginning of this year.
Touch ID has been confirmed weeks ago. Also A7 processer has been confirmed on both models

I can't believe how dumb Ive was to get rid of the side bezels. Now when you try to touch the screen on the side it won't respond well because it thinks you're just holding it. Ive is a joke and Apple desperately needs to bring back Forestall to clean up Ive's and Cook's mess.

Scott, is that you?! ;)

There are still bezels on the sides; they're just thinner. Much like the iPad Mini, which I've never seen to confuse an intended touch with a touch for the purposes of holding. The software is pretty advanced in that regard.

As you can see, according to some replies you had, iPads just don't need to improve the USB... until Apple does, and then it will be a key element of the device and any competing tablet without it will be stoned to death.
Will anybody remember that other brands had tablets with USB 3 long before? (and with a very useful standard size connector, btw). Nope.

Apple has some great products, in part due to Apple's closed nature, but the downside of Apple is that it is only Apple. I mean, if their hardware suits your needs, it is wonderful, if not, there is no other option (with the same OS and compatible apps).

Dear Goddess!!!
This post is ignorant on SO many levels I don't know where to start....
Umm, I guess 1st of all: Scott NEVER did industrial design. It's not like he & Jony were creating hardware together, lol.
The (admittedly, odd) complaint that you have it that you don't like the way the HARDWARE was designed (for whatever kooky reason). How in the f would Scott have ANYTHING to do with this???????

I am getting a vicarious thrill up my leg watching your love affair with Scotty.

It has been speculated to be thinner as stated in this post and many others.

As a result, it is thinner, lighter, and smaller in size than the existing fourth-generation iPad.

It has also been speculated that Safari will be snappier!

Well hey, that's something. Assuming everything else is the same, we'll know the new iPad will weigh around 1.3 pounds...if I got my math right.

Though the smaller enclosure likely means they'll be using a slightly smaller battery, which will trim even more weight off. If Apple could find or buy a way to make the glass front over the screen thinner without making it too fragile (which I believe they did with the iPhone 5), then I wouldn't be surprised if it weighs around 1.1 pounds or so. Which is a pretty hefty cut all things considered.

I'm looking forward to the iPad 5. Lighter and more powerful is a good thing. Any word if there will be stereo speakers?

And I was only kidding in the Breaking Bad thread, I'm not the danger. :D

For me, the weight is what makes the mini attractive. Make the full size ipad light enough and I won't need to buy a mini.
