How Do You Think The New MacBook Pro Games?

Why would Apple underclock the graphics card?

Presumably temperature and/or battery life.

I assume it would lower heat emission and energy consumption, so battery life and an aluminum body that's cooler to the touch would be the reason?

Probably. Could be a reaction to the 8600s frying so many MBPs a couple of revs back, or it could be just general. If it's because of the overheating thing, that makes it even more annoying that they didn't use a lower-wattage, but faster, GPU.

I would assume it's heat yes, battery wise it consumes as much as the 9600 (nearly) so that wouldn't make a difference.

Do anyone have any 3dmark06 scores for any of the computers?

If you post please define what model you've got. (ofc :) )

Anybody??
I have my hopes very very high for a Monday Steam Mac Release. Since that day will be the release of the PC new UI

Many have said they will do it simultaneously.

I didn't save the page (d'oh!) but I got something like 7.86k with my overclock and at stock I got 6.82k. Model is in sig. If you really want, I'll bench again so you can get the exact breakdown.

Also, anyone got anyother game recommendations? I've done SC2, BC2, HoN, WoW, L4D2 and other people have done some other steam games.

All in all, this thing is a very good gaming laptop and can handle things adequatley. Is it going to break FPS records? No, but it will handle everything out there with native/close to resolution and medium to high settings. If you really want a true gaming laptop then look elsewhere but this is an excellent card. It OC's great and stays mighty cool under load.

Wait you did all those? Did you post that stuff? I would love if you could take some screens or something

Is it anticipated that either or both the 256MB and 512MB 330M would be able to handle a Mac port of Orange Box with all settings at the highest possible? I believe I saw someone in this thread mention being able to play Crysis at 13xx x 7xx resolution with high settings in Bootcamp, so I guess it's reasonable to expect a several year old Valve game to play all maxed out?

Orange Box will get destroyed (so will TF2) on all high 4x aa on 1440x900

Anything over 4xaa you won't be able to see the difference, but will hurt fps.

That's reassuring! Would you expect the same with 1680x1050? I'll be getting the high res upgrade.

What's the highest setting for AA usually in games? I'm not a computer gamer; I only have a few last generation consoles, but an impending MBP purchase has me excited to pick up a couple games.

No, that could start to push it in some of the newer games. CSS, HL2 should still be all good though.(whole orange box really) All depends on what you're playing.
Bioshock, at high setting still only 1280 res

on a 15" screen, even 2aa is all you need. It is sharpening the pixels more or less, to get a more distinct frame.

you only need 4 8 16 AA when you have 24 inch monitors.

AA eats Vram for lunch, so you want to have the 512 330 if possible.

I will be purchasing (at the end of the month) and 15" i7
though I am not sure if I will go for the upgraded rez.

1440x900 on a 16xx led will look bad.

1440x900 on a 1440x900 led will look fine

I had the entry level 27" iMac and it played the Bioshock demo, roughly at that res, or maybe just a bit higher, with medium settings. Dunno how its ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB compares with the 330M though.

Likewise, intent to get the 15" i7. Thanks for your great replies.

Does anybody know how Modern Warfare 2 runs on the "low end" 15" with high resolution?

Thats all I care about ;)

Dragon Age screens...odd

So installed FRAPS and ran DAO, the results puzzle me somewhat:

DOA Settings:

DOA Screen 1

DOA Screen 2:

DAOrigins2010-04-2120-48-31-70.jpg

So according to FRAPS getting just over 20 FPS, however the game doesn't look like it is running on a low frame rate and is quite smooth. Anyone else tried DOA with FRAPS?

Also having an issue with Crysis, was getting around 23-34 FPS on default High settings @ 1024x768, yet again the game looked smoother than the frame rate suggested. Wanted to try different settings to compare however the game crashes now whenever I try, going to have to uninstall and reinstall before I can provide some decent screens on that score.

Fallout 3

So, Fallout 3 is just not working right; crashing after 5-7 minutes consistently in fully authorized Windows 7 professional 64bit. I have the 2.66 i7 with 512MB 330M in it... Anybody else having difficulties/fixes?

That's weird, engadget had a story about bad GPU switching in these new MBP's, though windows always uses the 330m

Quick initial sanity checks: The new machine plays WoW well enough for now; dunno how it'll be after the expansion pack. At least, that's what I got from about five minutes logged in.
