I'm going to buy whichever one gets updated first (more bang for the buck). I can only hold off till the end of July though :( The current iBooks are great for my needs but I just hate purchasing outdated hardware.

yeah i did order a BTO, just upgraded the RAM to 1 gig ... and it shipped today from China
What's the ETA?

Let me know when you get your PB G4. I want to ask you some questions and see if we're getting the same performance.

but doesn't do the things that I need it to do most (surf the internet in my back yard so I can do research and write papers outside).

Outside and Apple Notebooks don't go together well, anyway (unless you work at night in the moonlight - coz as long as they don't use better displays for their Notebooks there's no chance to see anything at all as soon as the sun is shining directly onto your display).

thanks. that rules me out. :(

Don't tell me you don't know anybody who is still a student or works at a school and doesn't need a new Powerbook or iBook ;-)

When you get your PB, if you don't mind, I want to ask you some questions and see if we're getting the same performance. Please, let me know when you get your PB.

TIA.

I think you are safe ordering today. I just ordered and received a PowerBook last week.

I honestly think all 'Book updates are coming in September, probably a bit after Apple Expo Paris. That's just my opinion from the clues I have gathered.

If you order a stock machine (no BTO options) you have 14 days to return it for refund. BTOs are only returnable for warranty type problems. If you are really worried, then don't open the box for 14 days. Once the box is opened, then you have to pay a re-stocking fee. However, I didn't worry about it, and I think you don't have to either.

The next updates are going to be very small anyway, so is it worth wasting all this time waiting for a very small update? That is what I asked myself and the answer was no, so I ordered it and moved on with my life. Let me tell you, I am very glad I did. That whole waiting thing is off my shoulders, I am using my new PowerBook instead of waiting and dreaming, and I absolutely love my new PowerBook. :D

Any chance that in the upcoming revision of the Powerbook that the 12" will come with 512MB built in instead of 256MB built in and 256MB in the memory slot? Seems like a waste having a 256MB stick occupying the only memory slot. 512MB built in would allow it to be upgrade to 1.5 GB with no problem and leave the memory slot free to put what ever you want in there.

Seems likely- I mean, having that 256MB chip built in the Power Book G4 is a waste (needs to be at least 512MB). Hopefully Apple ups the amount of RAM you can put into the 12" Power Book at least 1.5GB (2GB, preferred.)

I agree. The same should be true for iBooks too, or maybe with less than a 2GB maximum. Either way, both 'Book lines should definetly come with 512MB RAM standard. You REALLY need at least 512MB to run Tiger comfortably.

Unfortunately I don't think we're gonna see new laptops for a while yet. According to the conference call today everything seems to be selling very well. With good sales what incentive is there to release new machines? Please someone tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

No upgrades?

So Steve want the PCs to fry the Apples in terms of speed, laptop screens etc? Apple laptop buyers are bying taken in by the salesman! Yea, and I hate Windows!

The message is: if you want a mac laptop, you either must buy a slow and outdated computer or you have to pay rediculous amounts for Powerbooks.

I can only wait till mid August before school starts and plus I want to catch the Ipod Mini deal so I'm hoping and praying it happens sometime in the next few weeks so I don't get screwed over.

Does anyone know if Apple has a return policy if the new book comes out, say, 2 weeks after you purchase your original model, they will exchange yours for the newer book?

Didn't want to start a new thread and get it locked, but I have a good question.

What do you all estimate to be the prices of the new iBooks. Do you think Apple and authorized resellers will offer huge deals on the present iBook once the new ones come out? Like $700

Seeing how the Powerbook will hit the average at the end of July/Early August, Apple must update both books for the new school year.

I can't see them doing anything quite like that, but I do believe that a price drop will be a feature of the new model. LCD costs are rapidly dropping, and many others on this forum have rightly pointed out that the price gap between PC and Macintosh notebooks is now very significant.

The other possiblity is that the price will stay the same, but Superdrive will become a standard feature on all models. Thoughts, anyone?

I think the Superdrive should be standard on everything but the base model(s). If the 12" Powerbook can have one, why can't the 12" iBook have one?

I am thinking about getting a new Powerbook in September for school and was wondering if it will be updated by then or should i wait longer till the update comes out?

I'm pretty certain that an update is imminent, I just ordered a 12" iBook because I need it right now, not in two months! Anyway, I ordered it with another 1gb stick of ram from Crucial, a sleeve from Shinza, a 20gb iPod and I chose to get a 60gb HDD and bluetooth with my laptop. This is going to be my first Mac ever, I used to hate them so much (until the G4, never tried a G4 or later) but looking at the market right now for a good 12" laptop that fits my needs as a graduate student who already has a powerful computer at home, I can't find a sweeter deal elsewhere. I'm not looking for an ultra-fast computer loaded with features, I was looking for a small, highly portable laptop that I could take some notes in class with it, that I could write papers on, that was durable, well built and that would last me for at least 2 years. Simply, there's no PC laptop that I could find that match my needs better than the iBook, at least in my budget. I know they are getting pretty outdated by now but they still can do pretty much everything you throw at it (except Coreimage and some games), is still a very capable laptop with a good battery life, a good keyboard and long lasting...

If you're looking for specs, look elsewhere as Apple is getting crushed by the PC market but when you look at what you want it to do, there's no reason not to pick one! I would have liked to have it updated, especially the HDD and having bluetooth with it, a 256mb increase in ram would probably be in the only available slot of RAM anyway but it didn't stop me from buying it, it's a tad more expensive but still a heck better than a 700m for example!

Now I'm waiting for it then I'll have to learn how OSX works after about 15 years of using DOS/Windows.... that'll be the hard part I fear!

Any predictions about what that update will include? G5? HD? 2.0 Ghz? Standard 2GB of RAM? Now i am just making stuff up. :D

Please, please, don't ever mention a G5 PB again. We've finally gotten rid of the "G5 PB Next Tuesday" threads. There will never be a G5 PB.

Apple is going to Intel. There is no way they are going to shoehorn a G5 in before they go to intel. First off, it's too big of a challenge, but how can they go to 64 bit, and then go to a 32 bit Intel Pentium M.

Not going to happen.

Any solid clues about IBook

Well.. Tuesday has come and gone (per someone else's rumor). I was hoping there would be an announcement of new IBooks in conjunction with Mac show in Boston.

Now what? I need to buy an ibook for my daughter for college in the Fall and time is running out.

Anyone have any clues?? I'm amazed there hasn't been any speed bump or improvement since Oct 2004. And they still ship with a meager 256k ram.

Help! Any advice or insight?
