Umm... At last check it was 256MB of RAM. ;)

My advice: buy whatever iBook is out just before college. Even if it's the current machine, it'll be a great purchase. They're still very cool machines and for most college uses, a 1.2GHz G4 is fine. :)

Yeah, but that's actually an advantage. Means you can buy more RAM from crucial, instead of paying Apple's premium prices...

Except that when Apple made 512MB the default, prices dropped some. And with only 1 SO-DIMM slot, you want all the internal RAM you can get.

no updates, anytime soon. Laugable, for sure.
Then again, why are we surprised? Apple's about the green. Design, innovation, etc. is all marketing glib.

All about the green. That's the mantra. Customers can wait it out and feed more $$ into the insatiable Jobstown cult and get pseudo anointed outdated portables.

wait a second...what multinational corporation is not about the "green"? that brand "apple" belongs to a company...its not anyone's best friend. Besides, better Jobstown than Gatestown.

Well.. Tuesday has come and gone (per someone else's rumor). I was hoping there would be an announcement of new IBooks in conjunction with Mac show in Boston.

Now what? I need to buy an ibook for my daughter for college in the Fall and time is running out.

Anyone have any clues?? I'm amazed there hasn't been any speed bump or improvement since Oct 2004. And they still ship with a meager 256k ram.

Help! Any advice or insight?

I feel your pain. Same situation. Went to the Apple store in Alpharetta, GA. To heck with my daughter going to college. I wanted to walk out with a 15" PB. Oh the pain. Here's hoping for an updated iBook SOOON. End of Jul is my drop dead date.

LOL, that was pretty funny, but it would have been even better like this:

To hell with my daughter's operation. I walked out with a 15" PB, a dual 2.7 and a 30 incher.

sorry, i kid

As a college student who is still using the iBook my parents bought me the day before I left for school, I can say without a doubt your daughter does not need anything more than the current iBook and 512MB of RAM. I use a 700MHz G3 with 384MB of RAM everyday. I can connect to any WiFi spot with my original AirPort Card. I can run Office, Safari, Mail, iTunes, and iChat without a single problem. My iPod works fine with it and my digital camera with iPhoto is great. Is it Teh Snappy? No. Is it fine for most college kids needs? Absolutely. What program exactly does your daughter need to run that needs the power you are waiting for?

Yeah! They should switch to a different processor or something. ;)

I recognize the IBook would be sufficient for her needs in college. But it would be great if it were up to the task of lasting her four years. Believe it or not, even though the computer is primarily for her education, her current IMac (for example) can't run the latest games she'd like to play :) (Like SIMS 2). The demands for processor speed seem to ramp up all the time, and I'd just like her to have the latest machine (as opposed to a system which is already 9 months old!). Plus... apple is making 512 Ram standard in all its other systems other than the old IBook.

I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet, buy one this week or next, and then kick myself when new ones come out shortly. I just can't fathom Apple waiting this long before upgrades. They usually try to stay competitive with PC alternatives in the notebook market.

Yes, still waiting. We went to the Apple store to do a side by side comparison btween the 12" and 14" iBook. I was concerned with the portability issue....12" is really portable. My daughter liked the bigger screen of the 14" and said she'd probably only have it on her desk anyway. My son chimed in with, then why don't you get a desktop? I was thinking Mac Mini but would still have to buy a decent 17" LCD and that would put the price up there with the iBook and she's not into an iMac. So looks like the 14". Will wait til the end of the month b4 ordering. Guess I'll go with the Apple edu store and take advantage of the free 4gb iPod. The 14" is slightly more expensive than Amazon and you have to pay state tax but will eventually get a 4 gb iPod for free. As to ram upgrade. I ordered a 512mb module and installed it on my wife's 14" iBook. Think that it cost about $60. Pretty easy to install. I did go out and buy a "jeweler's" screwdriver set though. The philips head screwdrivers I had just weren't sharp enough. This time I'll be ready ;) Cheers

I have not lived in GA for a few years but are they still doing to 'Sales Tax Free' weekend they used to do before school started? If the are, why not take a road trip up to Atlanta and buy the iBook there? You can still get the EDU discount if you buy it in the store.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that. Will have to check dates for the Tax Free day. Gosh, one more variable to think about......geeeeez  Thanks for the reminder. Cheers

Seems like iBooks and Minis have a 7-10 day shipping time in Europe. However, the US store still has same business day.

Now what's that supposed to mean? Their resupply ship sunk on its way to Europe? Or is it really updates but for Europe only? ;)

Europe: 7 -10 days
Canada: 5 -7 days
US: same business day
Australia: 1 -2 days

Korea: No Inventory

I'm so tempted to get a Sony Vaio S Series and just put a Mac OS X skin on Windows XP. GR!!

iBook for College

I've been reading these forums for a long time and thought I would register to respond on this one.

I had been waiting for a long time on the iBook updates but gave in and bought a previous generation PB instead. However, you may want to check prices at your daughters school if they sell Apples on campus. The prices at the University I checked were lower than the education discount on the web. I understand schools sometime have special deals or include cases, etc. Here are the prices I found:

12" iBook 1.2 ghz Combo $799
14" iBook 1.33 ghz Combo $999
14" iBook 1.33 ghz Super $1,199

And you can take advantage of the iPod Student Union promo... you may want to keep that however;)

If and When

If and When the Ibook comes out, whats the best way to purchase. I'm considering speed and price:

Apple Store - Will the store have inventory as soon as its announced?
Apple Website - Should we expect alot of backorders?
Amazon - I heard you don't pay tax. Is that true?

Its happening this week... I feel a powerful change in the force....

As far as the Amazon goes, this is copy and pasted from their website

"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, North Dakota, or Washington* are subject to tax.

* Please note, effective August 1, 2005 Amazon.com LLC will be required to charge sales tax in Kentucky. The new collection requirements will apply to all orders shipped and charged on or after August 1, 2005, even if the order was placed before August 1, 2005."

So you will only pay tax if you live in one of those states, also they have good rebates on them if you don't mind waiting for rebates, usually comes out cheaper then student discounts since you won't pay taxes after rebates.
