I was reading the little blurb about the iBooks on the Apple website and thought it might hold some clues as to when they would be released. So using www.freetranslation.com, I translated it into Spanish, back to English, into Russian and then back to English again. This is what it came back as:

"Make a surf the Fabric, a chat with friends, makes you owe to them, they play play, burn still DVDS and CD to create their own, video of a masterpiece or musical. In their favourite coffee. At 2 o'clock in the morning. IBook G4 delivers an existing digital way of life to its backpack. "

I can't seem to crack the code. Any guesses?

Too funny.

According to a guy on another forum, he claims his sources say definitely this Tuesday for new iBooks. No visual change in the form factor, minor bump to 64MB on graphics, 1.4 - 1.8 GHz Freescale 7448s.

Who are his sources? Did he use the babelfish translator instead? :)

I'll believe it when I see it - theres been rumours for so long - I've given up waiting :)

Already started a new thread... but...

My g/f just called the KR regional office to ask about the Ibooks, the regional sales manager told her the Ibooks would be announced in the US this week, but won't be available in Korea for a few more weeks.... sux for her... but good for me.. been waiting for 2 months now....

I would think this is a pretty credible source... luckily I just came back to California, but my g/f won't be able to get one for a while... any sites that ship abroad? But then there's extra Duty to pay....

1.4-1.8 ghz for the iBook processor? No way...

... and 2GHz PowerBooks with 128MB X800 graphics at Paris?

Maybe Apple is moving to differentiate the hardware more by bus speed (PowerBook will get new 200MHz bus), graphics hardware (64MB 9600 vs. 128MB 9800 or better), better displays and fancy features.

But if this new iBook comes in $100 cheaper as well, then I think the PowerBooks will need a rather decent pricedrop to get a look in.

I'd certainly buy a 1.4GHz 12" iBook without a second thought. I'd only think twice about it if the 14" iBook went widescreen or had a higher resolution display.

Anyway, now I'm anticipating new iBooks tomorrow, and that's a bad thing!

definitely tomorrow

My first iBook is "out for delivery" So this means new ones tomorrow for everyone else, 512RAM, 60Hd, Bluetooth included, cheaper!! I'm very excited but a bit apprehensive., but not disappointed that I've missed out on a better deal.

Has there been any instance where a BTO product's shipping time increased dramatically and no updates occured? Is there a chance that the BTO shipping times on the ibook will revert back to normal? I suspect that an update is imminent on account of the international stores being either sold out or having long waits on standard product orders. Have they ever been sold out before without receiving an updated product?

Hopefully they would give the 12" ibook a 60 gig hard drive... 40 gigs is really a joke now. 256MB is unacceptable. I want to switch so badly! :p

Just to get this right, but the ibook update is somehow now being based on the itunes store reaching it's goal?, besides the shipping times, and the specs being rather low in this type of computer market, are there any obvious rumours at all? I want to switch, and have been waiting since the day before forever, but I just seem to be losing interest. Something's gotta give.

p.s. Even if I wanted to go buy one right now, it seems there are none available through my area. Furthermore, if I did order from apple, i have to wait at least a week and a half...to me that's the only positive factor in the behalf of a updated ibook. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE up the ram and lower the price.

That'd be great, but if they put the 7448 (faster FSB) in the ibooks they had better put it in the powerbooks too, or the howling of powerbook owners will be deafening.

By the way, please give us a link to "that other forum" if you get a chance-- thanks!

I strongly agree. 256 is simply unacceptable in today's computer market!

Absolutely. I think apple hurts themselves by selling machines with 256. People buy it thinking it's usable with the base RAM, then they find the experience very frustrating and think macs are crap.

That said, there's no way it will happen on a "consumer" laptop at this point.

On another note, has anyone considered that they really can't update the ibooks without the powerbooks? A slight mhz gap and a few features like DVI, FW 800 (not even on the 12" PB), BT built in, better graphics, etc. are all that separate the lines already. Bump the ibooks to 1.4-1.8 and make the graphics 64 MB without a change to the PBs and why exactly would anyone buy a PB?

I concur. Are they going to update the iBooks along with the Powerbooks as well tomorrow?

guys, there was one time a couple of years ago where a g4 cube was actually better than a powermac (for like a month when they updated them)

apple may just update the ibook and be in the same specs as the powerbook for a couple of days or weeks before another update for the powerbook occurs.

It would be a stupid move not to up the included ram to 512.

I sort of disagree. If I get a laptop with 256MB, I'll be forced to upgrade. With that in mind, I'd end up with a 1.25GB laptop. If they stick in 512MB, I'll figure it's good enough and just leave it for who knows how long :).

If they update the iBook to have 256 built in and then 256 in the empty slot then I will just end up taking away the extra 256 and putting in a 1Gig stick.
Updating the RAM really doesnt make a difference to me or to anyone that is going to want more than 512 RAM in their computer.

If they do boost it to 512 then I will need to figure out what to do with the stick I take out.

I have a gig stick that I was using on my 1.5 PB.. (long story as to why I don't have the PB anymore...)... anyway, i hope it werks on the new Ibook... or else its just gonna go to waste.. :(

I think i'm jumping the gun here. It seems that everyone is basically set for the ibook to get updated tomorrow (while yes, that would kick ass), why tomorrow and not last week or next week for that matter. No concrete rumours, just the anger of waiting for so long taking over and demanding it be tomorrow.

All I know is that if Apple updates the iBooks without a PowerBook Update, I'm staying away from these forums for a few weeks, or at least till the sh** gets cleaned off the fans. All we will here between the updates will be people complaining about this and that, and it'll be too much.

well, if you read through the thread, you'll see that some people have "heard from reliable sources" (people at apple) that the update is tomorrow. But for the most part I agree - it's just frustration at this point.

NO, the long BTO shipping times on the iBooks & Mac Minis in the USA store, and the long shipping time for stock models on the UK store is a HUGE clue. We saw this before the iMacs were updated, before the Powerbooks in late January, and before Apple announced the Tiger release date (they moved Panther ship date to several days).

The update should come this week or next. I think it is great timing to sell Macs, for back to school.

Even though I'm hoping that the rumours are true - I'm waiting to splash some cash on a 12" iBook - I'm taking most of the signs with a pinch of salt. It wasn't that long ago, the UK Store was listing the Mac Mini with the same 7 day shipping time for the stock item, as the iBooks are now, yet no update was forthcoming.

I'm hoping wrong, though. I'm refusing to order an iBook, until the stock memory is at 512, and the video card supports CoreImage.

J

Edit: Funny, didn't notice before, the Mac Mini is now listed as 7-10 days on stock items.
