So... if I'm a student in college, I do qualify for the student deals right? Is that how it works with Apple?

Yes, I ordered the 15" PB from 1-800-MY-APPLE on Tuesday. They will ask you what the city and state of the school you attend, and the name of the school and verify that your school is on their list and then you place your order.

12 inch stats

With the 12 inch powerbook having a slower bus speed than the other powerbooks and using the same memory as the last 12 iteration, is there a good chance the 12 inch is using the same chip as before, but just with a modest L2 cache upgrade?

No 7457 in the 12 inch would be a big bummer, especailly with the 7457's chances of running cooler.

Thanks you so much, I was very nervous about this thing. I ordered my first apple computer (powerbook 15" 1.25) yesterday but the stock for 10gig ipod is a little low and it will not be ship before october 1st. I'm so happy :D
You know you would be better off with the 20GB model, it comes with the craddle and other stuff. I know it's a few extra dollars (quids??), but when you buy a PB + iPod it doesn't amount to much...

My £0.02.

No chance. The L2 cache is on-chip so it definitely is the 74x7.

I know it's a bit late, but I just ordered a new 15" w/ SuperDrive @ 1.25GHz yesterday afternoon with a 20GB iPod! Hello Mac world!

--Cless

i'm in too

just ordered my 1.33GHz 17" with 1GB DIMM and 5400 hard drive through the apple store in HK. can't wait until it ships (est late next wk)

sold my TiBook 4 long months ago, and been waiting for the updates since. been making do on my piece of sh*t compaq notebook from work, how unbearable

Has anyone posted Ti 1Ghz Vs. Ai 1Ghz benchmarks anyplace yet - I know it looks like being a 5% gain Mhz for Mhz, but I'd still think it'd be interesting to see this.

I'm all for this update by the way, I think it's going to be great to be finally able to throw away the asbestos knee mat, lose those fragile hinges while gaining the ATA 100, FW2, USB2 etc. Speed is good, but not everything - but that said, I'd still like to see a comparison :)

I thought I would get my powerbook today but just found out it isn't coming from IL but Taiwan and it's 2 day shipping once it reaches the country. Bummer! I can't wait...

ext HD v Firewire

good,
It sounds like I should stick to the 5400 I ordered and use an Ext Firewire @ 7200.
Thanks for all the feedback,
~bentoon:)

Panther release date

Do you have any guess as to how long it will take between first FC and final release ? (I guess estimates can only be based on the Jaguar release. How long between first Jaguar FC and Jaguar release...?)

I would really like to save the $$ on Panther. I think I'll wait 'till I'm pretty sure Panther will be released within one month...

Look at it this way. You have the privledge of using the Mac OS. Winblows users pay $300 for a full copy of their OS bloated with garbage (trust me, I know. that's why I switched). The regular Mac customer pays $130 for a full OS. Not to mention just $70 if you're a student. For those who think paying $130 (or $70) is expensive for an OS you're just crazy and I'd suggesting waking up and joining the real world.

Right :) But I want to pay the $130 for Panther, not for Jaguar. ;) I would gladly pay $200 for OS X on a PC, and I'm going to buy Panther if I don't get it preinstalled on my PowerBook. - I would just like to save the $130, as the only "penalty" is waiting for a couple of weeks more...

I consider Panther a must have over Jaguar. Jaguar still feels a little beta to me in some areas.

(And, yes, I know OS X is worth it. I switched in june :) )

new way to measure peformance?

possible to ask barefeats.com to do some peformance test on the new powerbook vs IBM/Dell Pentium M notebook ?
for example, run adobe application and see how long it need to load and read large document...run jedit and compare the performance.
install Xephem in the new powerbook, install Linux on the IBM/Dell notebook, then run Xephem and compare their result ? or other XFree base application...you name it ...:)

I'm in the same boat. Looks like I won't be taking the AlBook up to Seattle with me on Thursday afternoon, even though I ordered 3:28am PST on Tuesday.

I ordered mine at 2:55. The whole shipping time frames and ship from info has been inaccurate. At first Apple told me it was shipping on the 16th from CA which would have been really sweet because I live in AZ. Then I found out it shipped on the 17th and the tracking info told me it was coming from IL. Now I find out they are coming from Taiwan and are hopefully coming into the US right now. 2 Day Shipping! (After it enters the US that is) This is nothing compared to the whole G5 fiasco. At first I was bummed that my order that my order wad delayed but now I'm happy because I awoke from the hype and went with a powerbook.

I'm going to post this again just for the heck of it:

When you order online it says PB's will SHIP in 3-5 business days and then it'll take 3-5 MORE days to get to you. I ordered mine Wednesday afternoon and it says it will SHIP on or before 09/24, which is exactly 5 business days and which would make that by next Wednesday. So if all goes smooth today would be the earliest it would ship and Wednesday would be the latest.

I ordered a PB last Friday, couldn't wait any longer the tension was killing me. Well, I was scheduled to have it shipped on the 17th. But with the updating of the entire line, they updated my order (cancelled the old one and gave me the equivalent in the new line) Now they've moved the estimated shipping date to the 23rd. I can understand that. It's only a week. But I've heard of people who ordered online the day apple updated and they've already got confirmed shipping. (or am I wrong?)

My question is how are orders processed? Who gets priority? If it's first come first serve, since I already ordered before they came out shouldn't I be one of the first in line for the update? I'm not complaining, just curious at how things are handled. Besides I would really like my PB soon.:D

If you go to apple.com the estimate shipping date is 5-7 business day. I think i heard something like : the 12" will be available about 10 day after 15/17"

I would say you are lucky to get the upgrade. I held out and ordered right after the keynote. Can't wait to get mine...

That's pretty normal for BMW to cancel an existing order and update it to the new product. I've not only heard of this dozens of times but I myself had it happen. In fact I ordered mine and it was suppose to ship in 5-7days and it was like 3 weeks and I was asking where it was and then they told me that they were canceling my order and would get back to me. Like the next day they called me and said they upgraded me to the new model that they had just released and I would receive it in a week. Apples customer service is excellent no matter what you hear.

No it doesn't, at least it didn't when I ordered mine. It said shipping "Same Business Day," which to the best of my knowledge didn't happen (I got a shipping confirmation the day after, and the tracking # would work until the day after).

finally upgrading

Im finally ready to upgrade to a 15" Powerbook after running a really slow 7 year old 603e performa. Gonna head to apple store Wednesday and take the plunge into the future with 80 gigs, sounds alot better than a maxed out 3 gig HD that im running now:D
