Matt, I know how you feel. I ordered mine at 7:30 am pst the day they were announced. Supposed to be here today, but now Apple is telling me it's held at customs. Great, just great. I'm DYIN here!

Sometimes Apple and Airborne get their signals crossed. I'd keep checking the online status, but be aware that it could be saying "open" or that it's in Taiwan somewhere, when it's really in a truck in front of your house. In my experience, the online check (both Apple's, and especially Airborne's) can be highly inaccurate, and in my (our) favor.

If you have an Airborne #, call them or check with them.

New 15 and 17" Powerbooks: DVD-RW?

Hey guys, I was looking at Apple's Developer notes for the new Al 'Books. In talking about the SuperDrive it said the following:
DVD-RW
-Read: 4x Max
-Write: 1x
It was my understanding that the SuperDrive only wrote DVD-R's. Has this changed this revision? Can anyone confirm that DVD-RW's are writable via the SuperDrive? Thanks, appreciate it.

Man..the new ones are sweet! Just saw the 15 at Soho. need...new..faster..

dumb question: can the apple stores provide the faster 80gb hard drive, or is it only web/store special order. Reason being I would like to use alternate payment than simply a credit card. (The $15 shipping isnt a biggie, lol)

Definitely use target disk mode. You will need a 6pin to 6pin firewire cable and then you simply start up the computer you want to copy from while holding the T-Key down. This will start it up into target disk mode. Then start up the computer you want to copy to while it is connected to the other computer. I would recommend using a program like Carbon Copy Cloner because it will ensure everything is copied including your permissions and other invisible files.

Use target disk mode. That's the easiest way to transfer files. But definitely do NOT use Carbon Copy Cloner. It's almost a given that the new 15" AlBook will need special files and perhaps even has a special build of Mac OS X that it requires to run. If you use Carbon Copy Cloner, your new 15" AlBook may not be able to boot.

@nacl99

tell us about the Display? Is it crisp and brilliant? And what aboout the viewing angles?

How loud is the ne PB 15" ? Do you hear the fan while doing light stuff like internet etc?

Ditto.

My iPod (40) and Printer should be here tomorrow (whatever that $150 HP is) :D

And for a strange shipping story, I checked today the status of my iPod. It said it was in Shanghai, China, and it didn't give me an ETA. I checked about a half an hour later, it acted like my tracking number didn't exist. I checked another half hour later, and it was back, and says it was scanned in Shanghai, but is shipping from Illinois and will be here tomorrow.

:S

You don't have to Clone the whole hard drive and that is not what I intended. CCC isn't just for duplicating hard drives you can also use it to synch one drive to another or duplicate one file or a folder of files from one drive to another. Simply clone the your specific user data folders over or your whole user folder. This just ensures they display correctly and have correct permissions after being copied.

That's what happened with my Powerbook. First the tracking number didn't do anything, then it acted like it existed, but it didn't know where it was coming from. I called, they said "Oh, it'll be there tomorrow," and as of 12pm today, it says it's in Taiwan.

Something like this seems to happen every time Apple ships something to me via Airborne.

 I guess (and I didn't know that CCC could just clone folders). But if you do that, it just seems like you may as well simply set up your user to have the same user name as your old machine, and then manually copy it over via the Finder. Permissions don't really matter if you're just dealing with your user data; and I wouldn't recommend copying over a lot of your settings besides the more important ones (iCal data, Safari bookmarks, etc.), since it's good to start from scratch as much as possible.

Well I just got delivered the Timbuk2 bag I ordered from Apple, which I paid extra shipping for to insure it'd be here in time for the computer. Guess I wouldn't have had to do that if I'd known that by "Available today," Apple meant "Available today if you live in Taiwan." They seriously need to build an Apple store around here.

My only problem with it is the HDD. I can't believe Apple didn't put the IBM/Hitachi 7K60 as an option. After I get my 17" Powerbook, I'm going to have to put the 7K60 drive in it. This drive is the only Laptop drive that's 7200 RPM and 8MB cache. Twice as fast as any of the 5400RPM drives.

Very Interesting.
My problem exactly...

1) If you can put this Hitachi HD in the 17" (it's 60 GB) can you then put the original 17"PB HD in and enclosure and use it with a firewire? Something like this:
http://store.yahoo.com/insidecomput...enclosure1.html

2) Second, Honestly, on these machines is the extra RAM going to make a huge difference or is it more a panacea? If I load up on 1.5 or 2 G's of RAM, is the machine really built to be able to take advantage of this? Will I really be able to feel it?

I know that the G5's will be coming soon, and perhaps it's foolish to purchase PB's now,
Yet, these are Fine Machines at a fine price.
Plus my powerbook G3 (Lombard) While it has been with me for 5 years is being held together now by a rubberband. So I Want.
(I may add that 5 years ago I went through mental anguish about dishing out the cash for this G3PB but it has been one of the best investments)

Finally, my Compliments to this site and tremendous information.
After reading steadily for months, I have become compleatly addicted to the enless cycle of craving and grasping.
What will I do now? (I hear there is a 12 step group for MRA's like myself)

My 15" Alum

Okay here is what I've been able to put together/notice so far.

Screen: Seems as sharp as the old one, bigger bezel though. Still trying to get used to how low it is, because of the new hindge, feels like the dock is on the floor! Also the lid closes in a new way, keeps the screen away from the keys (no imprint) and can not be opened accidently like on the old ti book, you have to push the front button to unlock.

Body: The alum is very slick, it seems like its worth more money or something, like the old ti seems cheap now, especial with my old paint chips. Very few seems in the case to mess up. Still getting used to the plugs on the sides, verdict is out. Speakers holes are just like the G5, neat. I like the new trackpad, seems like actual metal, hopefully it will not get shinny over time like the ti. Sleeping light is on that botton on the front too btw.

Sound: Sound is good, not as good I think as before, but can be louder then the ti. Sounds canny... I have weird feedback or something coming through mine...sounds like the HD but not, driver bug? The HD sounds alot higher pitched then before...the fans are super quiet, hard to get this thing hot, vs Ti. I've had them running but there is no more ON/OFF effect, it slopes up, so never seems to get super load for me. But I havn't been doing anything huge yet.

Speed: I had a Ti 667mhz with 768mb ram, and I also use a dual 1.4 at work. I had have to say this thing blows away my ti. Very responsive. The only thing I've done that was real intense was a After Effects 6 render, was 1:30 on my old ti, now 30sec on this. I'm very satisfied with the speed, and excited about the slewing...have not noticed a lag.

Odd stuff: Battery has a turn key thingy to release it, looks nice though. Mem access is on the bottom with wierd screws (of ocurse) no more star, looks like hex. DVD drive is quieter and doesn't do "that thing" if you have a ti you should knwo what I mean...the seekig like thing. Atleast mine doesn't. One other od thing, the OS 10.2.7 is a little too new or something, Salling Clicker wont run in the pref panel, I think because of the difference with the blutooth support. In fact under keyboard/mice there is a seperate tab for bluetooth mouse and keyboard, like in panther. Also something was moved in the panel to make bluetooth fit on the same line instead of going to the next...

Well thats the basics I've noticed. Let me know if you want to know anything else. Also if you need any pics, besides the insides...no go.

Hope you all enjoy yours.

P.S. no coupon in the box for Panther discount :(

I'm planning on getting a new PowerBook (my very first laptop and Mac), but I don't want 10.2 when 10.3 is going to be released in a few months. Does Apple typically preinstall their new OS on old hardware? ie. If I wait until Christmas to buy this sweet PowerBook will I get 10.3 preinstalled (assuming 10.3 will be released by then)?

Yeah same here, the printer and the ipod are on their way. The computer has not been shipped :( The ironic thing is when I placed my order, the other two items were supposed to ship after the computer had shipped. Anyway, what's the deal with the Ipod in Shanghai? According to the online tracking system, it's been sitting there for two days.

The wait continues... :(

Yes.

Im having some problems with shipping as well. I ordered the 15" Superdrive model promptly on tuesday morning. The order status page says it still hasnt shipped, and it was supposed to on tuesday. I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and they confirmed it has not yet shipped. Getting anxious. Any hints or tips!? Thx.

yes yes yes

I did it! I just bought a 15". I can't believe it, sombody smack me.
:p  :D

What's the word on swapping out the 4200rpm HD for a 7200? Is it advisable? I'll probably just buy a FW drive, but it would be nice to not have to lug anything else.

1 more thing. Does anybody know if I'll be able to get 10.3 as a free update since it's being released soon?

Does anyone know for the ipod rebate if you need to have your product order, shipped,or receive before september 27?

You purchased your 15" on Tuesday morning. If you did it from the US Apple Store it states that it will ship in 3-5 business days. Today should be the 1st day it could ship and this coming Monday would be the 5th of those 3-5 business days.

Hints or tips?
1) If it does not ship by Monday afternoon/evening I would call them up.

2) Patience is a virtue.

If it's released within 30 days of when you get your PowerBook, you should get it free or cheap.

I was confused by this too so I called up the number for the rebate center. I was trying to get a straight answer on what to "order AND TAKE POSSESSION" meant and I was told if I order it say on the 26th I would be fine.

If you want to call and verify, that number is 1-888-767-4854

My PowerBook shipped yesterday and my ipod is shipping tomorrow. So you can buy them in stores already? I they got them right away?

A Apple Rep informed me via email that you can order the powerbook by the last day to take advantage of the ipod deal.
