I'm so happy I held off to order my powerbook (I almost didn't) and am now getting a better machine at a lower price with the ipod deal!

Yes, they had them the first day. I went after class on Tuesday to check them out in Arlington, VA and they were already sold out. I've heard many stores had sold out the first day.

Thanks you so much, I was very nervous about this thing. I ordered my first apple computer (powerbook 15" 1.25) yesterday but the stock for 10gig ipod is a little low and it will not be ship before october 1st. I'm so happy :D

I am a first time mac owner too and couldn't be more excited. You'll just want to make sure to send the rebate in time. I believe you have a few months. It will probably take 4 to 6 weeks to receive your cash but it will definetly be worth it. A new 10 gig ipod for under $100 bucks. I guess the machines were in the mail before the announcement. They had them ready and were just waiting untill the keynote to put them for sale.

Anyone know when panther upgrades will be given out? I want to purchase a new powerbook, but would prefer to save some money on Operating System costs.

Thanks,
- Mango

I don't believe they gave a release date at the keynote but just said it would be out by the end of the year. I hope that it will come out within a month because I heard that Apple had a policy that if a new OS comes out within that period of time you can buy the upgrade for $20. Does anyone know if this is true?

sorry to repeat this, but I really wanna know

My only problem with it is the HDD. I can't believe Apple didn't put the IBM/Hitachi 7K60 as an option. After I get my 17" Powerbook, I'm going to have to put the 7K60 drive in it. This drive is the only Laptop drive that's 7200 RPM and 8MB cache. Twice as fast as any of the 5400RPM drives.

Interesting.
My problem exactly...

1) If you can put this Hitachi HD in the 17" (it's 60 GB) can you then put the original 17"PB HD in and enclosure and use it with a firewire? Something like this:
http://store.yahoo.com/insidecomput...enclosure1.html

2) Second, Honestly, on these machines is the extra RAM going to make a huge difference or is it more a panacea? If I load up on 1.5 or 2 G's of RAM, is the machine really built to be able to take advantage of this? Will I really be able to feel it?

I know that the G5's will be coming soon, and perhaps it's foolish to purchase PB's now,
Yet, these are Fine Machines at a fine price.
Plus my powerbook G3 (Lombard) While it has been with me for 5 years is being held together now by a rubberband. So I Want.
(I may add that 5 years ago I went through mental anguish about dishing out the cash for this G3PB but it has been one of the best investments)

Finally, my Compliments to this site and tremendously helpful information....

A question for those who have received their powerbooks, especially the 15", has battery life improve at all? Do you guys get the advertised battery life or even come close to it?

Cheers

Simply clone the your specific user data folders over or your whole user folder. This just ensures they display correctly and have correct permissions after being copied.

Thanks to both of you for helping me out with this. I am not planning to replicate every single thing, indeed there is some crap I can do without. But I hope that this will be an easy way to transfer Office, my photos, itunes library, .docs, .xls's, Safari bookmarks etc...

Oh Phil, I just love your 1-2 word responses ;)

Speaking of battery life, is it possible to put a 3rd party battery that has a longer life in these powerbooks?

Did Steve give a date at the keynote? Why do think it won't be released in that time? Not a big deal because I can't wait anymore and woudln't have been able to take advantage of the ipod deal.

So do the new PowerBooks come with the Developer Tools CD? On the site it says that it does, but I asked the salesperson at The Apple Store and they said that I would have to download it.

One more question about the OS: typically, how soon does the hardware (ie. the PowerBook) get the new OS (ie. 10.3) when the new operating system is finally released?

When it's released, and you pony up $120?

:)

Dev tools

it actualy comes with one DVD with everything on it. I didn't look to see if the Dev tools were on that however...a dev tools image can be found in a new "install files" or something folder.

Battery life: I have yet to truely test, the times it is giving me are very inacurate, 1.5hr fully charged...so I havn't really timed it.

Althought it was really neat to find out you can put it to sleep and have 3 min to change the battery (runs on small backup).

Apple makes more money that way.

A less cynical reason would be that, heck, Panther isn't at FC yet. Once it reaches Final Candidate, it'll be awhile then before release. Overall, I think we have more than a month worth of development cycle, although I hope it's out in time.

External FireWire hard drive vs. internal hard drive speed

Theres something wrong with your link, but I found this test on barefeats where you can see the difference in speed between a hard drive in a FW800 enclosure vs. putting it inside the PowerBook. The page also has a link to a FW800 notebook enclosure (MicroGB800).

It looks like it performs well. In addition you could buy a really fast non-notebook drive and put it in a FW800 enclosure for higher speeds than any internal notebook drive. Think 10,000 rpm

I am considering getting a 4200 rpm drive to get longest possible battery time, lowest heat, and lowest noise level. Then maybe an external drive later if I need the speed when at home. I also think I prefer the Combro drive because it burns CD-R faster than the Super drive and I don't need to burn DVD's on the go (and you can get an external 4x "Super drive" ;-)

Thanks Hugi777, That's Interesting...
I wonder if I put the Hitachi 7K60 7200rpm inside a 17" it would be:
1) More Noise
2) More heat
3) Less battery

I suppose if you up the Ram to 1G or 1.5G's you might not feel the difference in HD speed
you might not even feel the
Noise
heat
probably battery?

Thanks,
Bentoon

Well, of course ;) The question is by how much. I don't know. Obviously it also depends on what you do; if the disk is constantly accessed a 7200 rpm drive will shorten the battery life considerably (I think), whereas if you just use a word processor a 7200 rpm drive will be no different than a 4200 rpm drive :)

That depends on what you are doing and how disk intensive that is. If you edit a picture in Photoshop that fits inside the 1 GB RAM you don't need a hard drive :)

The simple fact is if you are a video editer and need a speedy hard drive 60GB will not come even close to satisfying you. You will still be better off getting an external firewire 250GB 7200RPM high density platter hard drive. Maybe even an external SCSI raid array.
