About that latch problem, apparently it is quite easy to fix. There have been forums where you can learn how to do it. Sorry I can't remember where, but I'm sure someone here knows where. I know it's probably upsetting to have to fix it yourself, but I guess you'll get kudos from the people you fix it for...Originally posted by the_dalex
I've seen a lot of problems with the latches on the 15's, as well. I'm very disappointed that they can't make a good latch, considering the rash of problems with the old TiBook latches. The worst part is that everybody comes back to me expecting a straight replacement, but I can't guarantee that the next one won't have the same bad latch with an extra dead pixel thrown in for good measure. I just tell them to make Apple fix it, because an exchange is not the real solution to their problems.
I think that's the best way to start so that one is not too disorientated when coming from the Windows world.Originally posted by T.Rex
I find it easier to just drag the Applications folder to the dock, saves extra clicks when opening programs.
Also once the Apps folder is in the dock, if you click and hold on the icon a list view of the folder will pop up, not unlike the windows start menu.

I got my new 12" PB earlier this week and heat is not an issue. I have been taking it to class everyday, using it on my lap and i haven't noticed the heat at all. I've actually found it to be MUCH cooler than my old 14" iBook which got extremely hot on both the bottom and the on left palm rest where the hard drive was.
Don't hesitate to get one of these beauties! These new 7447's are awesome, so much more responsive than my old pathetic 600mhz G3 iBook that had no business running OSX.
I'm going to do exactly the same thing: trade in that iBook/800 and get that 12" PB.Originally posted by tomrob
This is terriffic news - thanks for that, T Rex. Before selling my 800mhz 12" iBook and trading up, are there any other potential downsides to the exchange I need to know about ? Weight ? Robustness/durability ? Tom

I'm waiting for Panther to get my 15" PowerBook. I was shocked to hear about the latch problem. I hope with mine that isn't the case.

Just a question... What does a dead pixel look like? Is it really not that big of a deal? Noticeable, or not?

And does anybody know any downsides to getting the backlit keyboard?
As I understand it, it is not that big a deal. I t can be fixed rather easily... You won't even have to return your PB to Apple (if you have that problem, that is).Originally posted by haiggy

So how do you fix it. Please tell.
Now that you've asked, I can't seem to be able to get my hands on the forum where they explained it. GRRR! I've read a post on a MacBidouille forum where the guy mentions quickly that he fixed his by slightly bending the 'hook'. But I'll look for some more details.Originally posted by Loopy

Apple Stores are down, as we speak.
So, maintenance? Panther?
That was a little a bit of excitement for the sunday morning... BTW the European stores are still down.Originally posted by MasterMac

Holding your PowerBook in your hands, you face west (or whatever direction Cupertino is), chant "Hanash Banash Apple, Hanash Banash Jobs" twice, kneel, place your PowerBook in the ground in front of you, bow 3 times (4 if you have a model with a backlit keyboard) and sacrifice a virgin the same night. By the next full moon, your latch should work.
I can't believe you're still in that situation. And I guess you are waiting for that refund before you can re-order, right?Originally posted by jkeithh
Just curious as to whether or not anyone else had their Powerbook lost by Airborne? I am still waiting to get a refund from Apple.

Was that a BTO 15" you bought?Originally posted by jkeithh
Actually I decided not to reorder because they told me if they did a replacement for me, it would be about 3 weeks before I would get it and I am tired of waiting. I am going to go my local CompUSA (of course I lose my Edu discount) once I get the refund from Apple.
