New PowerBooks - Finally

About that latch problem, apparently it is quite easy to fix. There have been forums where you can learn how to do it. Sorry I can't remember where, but I'm sure someone here knows where. I know it's probably upsetting to have to fix it yourself, but I guess you'll get kudos from the people you fix it for...
I think that's the best way to start so that one is not too disorientated when coming from the Windows world.

This is terriffic news - thanks for that, T Rex. Before selling my 800mhz 12" iBook and trading up, are there any other potential downsides to the exchange I need to know about ? Weight ? Robustness/durability ? Tom

I would venture, as a guess, that the PB is a little bit less robust than the iBook though. Man those iBooks are rugged!
I'm going to do exactly the same thing: trade in that iBook/800 and get that 12" PB.

I'm waiting for Panther to get my 15" PowerBook. I was shocked to hear about the latch problem. I hope with mine that isn't the case.
Just a question... What does a dead pixel look like? Is it really not that big of a deal? Noticeable, or not?
And does anybody know any downsides to getting the backlit keyboard?

It isn't with mine either.
A dead pixel is a pixel on the screen that is black no matter what you do. A stuck pixel is white or any other color no matter what image is on the screen. I suppose it looks something like a speck of dust on your screen, except it doesn't ever come off. Nonetheless, I don't have one, so I can't say
There are none. The keys are still fully removable.
As I understand it, it is not that big a deal. I t can be fixed rather easily... You won't even have to return your PB to Apple (if you have that problem, that is).
Holding your PowerBook in your hands, you face west (or whatever direction Cupertino is), chant "Hanash Banash Apple, Hanash Banash Jobs" twice, kneel, place your PowerBook in the ground in front of you, bow 3 times (4 if you have a model with a backlit keyboard) and sacrifice a virgin the same night. By the next full moon, your latch should work.
Now that you've asked, I can't seem to be able to get my hands on the forum where they explained it. GRRR! I've read a post on a MacBidouille forum where the guy mentions quickly that he fixed his by slightly bending the 'hook'. But I'll look for some more details.

Well kids, the latch was a huge smack of buyers remorse for me. But I fixed it...as per Tom Greever's advice:
I've been working with Apple over the last several days to solve my latch issue. They also offered to replace the unit, or have me ship it to them for repair. However, because I'm leaving the country on Wednesday the time does not allow for either of these options... SO, my Apple rep. talked to engineering and they agreed to (for the sake of time) walk me through the process of repairing my PowerBook on the phone. Here's what they said:
With the PowerBook open, depress the latch button and notice how it move a small piece of metal inwards (toward the keyboard) to open the latch. When the latch is no longer secured by this piece of metal, it pops open. Obviously, if the latch itself was slightly bent towards the front of the PowerBook, it could easily pop open.
So, close the PowerBook to the point that the latch is drawn out and catch it with your finger. Hold onto the latch and raise the lid. Now, using gentle pressure, push downwards (toward the keyboard) on the latch. Only do it slightly. You are bending the latch downwards. Now close the PowerBook and see if it helps. If it is not quite where it needs to be, continue the process.
Be careful, because too much pressure could break the latch, or damage the unit. Do it in small increments until it works better.
I did this and my PowerBook works great now!

I have to say that I had read something like that a few days back, but I couldn't remember where and was at a loss when people here asked me to explain.
I wish moderators could make your post a proper story, so that all PB owner having that problem could find the solution quickly.

I can't believe you're still in that situation. And I guess you are waiting for that refund before you can re-order, right?
Actually I decided not to reorder because they told me if they did a replacement for me, it would be about 3 weeks before I would get it and I am tired of waiting. I am going to go my local CompUSA (of course I lose my Edu discount) once I get the refund from Apple.
