I got mine from the apple store w/ the educational discount. I got the 5400rpm HD and 1x 512mb ram. The discount helped b/c it ended up being about 2720 in the end. Saved about 300 bucks so it was all good. GOOO educational discount!

My 12" was shipped out today too. Bought it from apple. The good news is that FedEx is delivering, since i heard bad things about airborne express. Its still in taiwan though, hopefully it will get here in two days.

hey Loopy when did you order your powerbook, and when did it ship ?

i orderd my 15" on the 16th still waiting for it to be shipped.
:(

anybody in the uk waiting aswell ???

The "Rip off Britain" wait

anybody in the uk waiting aswell ???

Here's my timescale (PB 17" 1.33Mhz, stock unit (i.e. 4200RPM drive)):

Ordered 19/09/03, Apple Store UK.

20/09/03 Apple store tracking says "Fully shipped", "picked up Taipei, TW".
22/09/03 Now says "Cleared customs, TW. Depart terminal TW".
23/09/03 "Arrive terminal, LUX".

...then no change for 5 days.....

28/09/03 The name of the carrier on the Apple store order status page (the one before the tracking page) has changed from "Kuehne & Nagel" to "TNT Nederland BV"
30/09/03 (today) Got fed up & called Apple Store (after 30 mins on hold).

The guy tells me the PB just cleared customs in Lux YESTERDAY (29th).... and is ready to ship from there to the UK now.

Confirmed by entering Apple's 10-digit tracking number in the "customer reference" box (NOT the "consignment number" box) at tnt.co.uk (the page for tracking international packages, NOT the box on the first page of the site).

This then gives you the TNT consignment number (which is TOTALLY different from Apple's "tracking number"), and you can enter this at any time on the front page for a detailed breakdown of the journey from Lux to the UK!

So mine's either coming tomorrow (unlikely) or Thursday (more likely).
Honestly!! 7 days to clear customs in Luxembourg. Darned continentals & their siestas!! ;)

Sorry for the length.....

(said the Bishop to the Nun.....)

Ordered within about 5 min's after Steve said "They are here". Ordered the PB 15" 1.25 and a 2G G5 + 23 LCD" from my Mac dealer in Devon "Quay IT" Never let me down in the 7 years that I've been dealing with them since moving to Cornwall.

Just to let you know there was a small shipment that arrived in the UK on Friday mine was part of that shipment. I've been told that a larger shipment is due next week, possibly Friday and that it should include 2G G5's

Typing this post via wireless internet on my college campus from my new 15-inch 1.25GHz stock PowerBook, and lemme tell ya, except for one stuck cyan pixel in the upper left, it's gorgeous and wonderful. I'm loving it! Arrived today and I've already got it tweaked pretty nicely. Though, I am looking for some good sites for freeware utilities and tips for Mac newbies (which I am, mostly). Any suggestions?

Freeware

Freeware eh? Yeah there are plenty good sites out there download.com is one of them.... but the one that i find helpful for me at least it the one thats located in the apple menu below the about this computer selection. Apple's site is chock full of cool apps demos, shareware, freeware. So if its good enough to be on apple's site then its worth checking out.

Yesterday! 1st day at the university with my new 1.25 PB :

I was sitting in public place where you can have acces to Internet wireless, and i was suround by about 15 pc computers. Pretty weird feeling to be look by everyone hehe.

I realy love mac os. I'm just waiting for Portage(gentoo/linux packaging system)
to be available for mac (about 1 month) to manage my open source package.

The battery life is ok. When i unplug it, the power meter said about 2h but in reality it's more 3-3.5h and a little more if i dont use my dvd (with i pretty never use in class).

everyone have good site to realy learn about mac os(not only basics thing, maybe more darwin docs and tweaking possibility)?

P.S. no longer newbie!!!

powerbooks

Hey I ordered my 17in on sunday, and the shipping tracker says that it will be here tomarrow. I also order a G5 dualy, and am so excited, I don't really care when it comes though, because I have lots of time, as Iam a film student, and all of of my dv projects are done, I really don't need it until next semester. I so can't wait for my Al book, I have wited until the updates, and have been drooling to get my hands on one of the new books. I haven't really seen the 17in one, because there is no mac stor in Montan where I live. But I just had to get it when I saw that is was better than the iMacs. Also I on Safari, whenever I try to use capitols, this big box with an arrow comes up and makes a puffing sound. Has anybody else have this happen, I am sure that it didn't do it before. Any way Cangrats to all the new book owners.

new 15 inch has problems starting up sometimes?

I just got my new 1.25 fifteen inch powerbook last week. It seems to be cold blooded. After it sits overnight it takes a couple trys to power it up. Is this usual, or something I should look into getting fixed?

I havent had the problem with it not booting up in the mornings after a nights sleep. Has anyone posted Xbench results for the 15" yet? i wanna see how they compare to mine.

Ever since the advent of the PowerBook, PowerBook experts have said, "Don't turn off the PowerBook".

Putting it into sleep mode is the best way to go. And the way you put it into sleep mode is by closing the lid. Macs are intuitive that way :) (I say this for the benefit of Wintel veterans, and for those, like my econ professor, who choose Sleep from the Apple menu instead of just closing the PowerBook.)

Sleep vs. Shut Down is a controversy on desktops too, but it's an issue of power use vs. convenience. You probably gain a lot more convenience than you lose in power though.

Especially with a PowerBook.

Looks like Apple is gaining a lot of new ground judging from the number of posts from ex-wintel-people having just bought their first Mac. Well, I'll be one of those people soon enough with a 15" PB, but I'll probably wait until the Panther arrives (which hopefully happens quite soon).

Got my Powerbook today

15' 1.25 I also got Soundtrack. Powerbook very fast and quiet and Soundtrack is a great program for remixing my songs.

And I my G52G + 23LCD is on its way.

This is a very good week. If I could only get my synth back from repair I'll be a very happy man. :D

Wow. Are you skipping meals to afford all this?

I have been using my 15" 1.25Ghz powerbook for almost a week now. I am loving it. Being the only mac user in the class makes me feel so special. I had a presentation today and I was using my phone to control the slides. People couldn't believe it. :) BTW, I am also an ex window user and this is my first mac. Other than the battery life, I have nothing to complain about on my new mac. I do have a question though, should I remove the battery before I plug it in using the power adapter? Also, is there any program or apple scripts out there that I can sync my ical and address book with Entourage X? Also some of the sites act funny with Internet Explorer or Safari especially the ones that run dll. I was wondering if any of you have a remedy for that?

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

I always tell everyone the first thing they should do when they get a new system is to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install. I don't know why but I always have better luck with a system when I do that. I've learned this time and time again using a new Mac with the installed OS and have problems until I reinstall. Also it would be good to run a permissions repair using Disk Utility.

To get the most from OS X, install the 2 utilities I consider essential:

LaunchBar (http://www.obdev.at/) "Access all of your files, applications, web-bookmarks and email addresses just by entering a short abbreviation". You have to try it to see how amazing it really is.

Default Folder (http://www.stclairsoft.com/) MacWorld: Default Folder X makes OS X file dialogs "work the way they should." So much so that they gave their 2002 Editors' Choice Award to Default Folder X as the year's Best System Enhancement Utility
