Latch problem resolved

Just to add my voice again on the latch issue. I fiddled with the latch, and now it seems to work perfectly. I also read that if you close the lid too slowly, it is more likely to pop open. That is because the bottom magnet causes the latch to swing into place. It does not swing enough if it closes too slow. But anyway, I don't even feel that I bent the latch, but I think that it losened up enough with I played with it.

On another point, my 15inch is on its way back from getting repaired. My superdrive went on the blink. It all worked well ripping a 100+ cds over the first couple days I got it, but then it stopped taking cds. It did not even engage the cd. It was like pushing against the eject mechanism. Anyway, I called support and they offered to replace the whole machine, or just fix the superdrive. I opted for the later since it would take longer to replace, and I felt that the problem was issolated to the drive. Of course, if this was a Pismo, they would not even have to crack the case, but I trust that their technicians know what they are doing.

Anyway, I spoke with Applecare last Tuesday night, I recieved a shipping box on Thursday and quickly had it back out that day. It was down in Houston the following morning. Apparently it was fixed and shipped that day, Friday. I just talked with Apple, and they said that Airborne has it out for delivery, which means that it should be here by noon, Monday. Were it not for the weekend, It would have be a 3 day turnaround. They told me that they replaced the drive, so I assume that all will be well again.

Anyway, I wanted to point out what so far appears to be a positive Applecare story, as well as my 2 cents on the latch issue. It is easy for the forums to be filled with those who have problems. Not that that is wrong, since these forums serve a value service for those with problems, it's just that they may distort problems since most people without problems do not go here, or respond positively to peoples problems. So, although there are certain people who had a latch problem, it is not clear what percentage of machines had this problem from just looking at the forums.

IT'S COMING!

An odd but good news.
Ordered my bundle (BTO PB 12"/1g/1.25/80, 2 40g iPod/ hp printer) on September 18th. Powerbook was given a shipping period between October 20th-31st.

THIS MORNING, it was shipped!

ps. I was hoping it'd be shipped later this month just in case Panther comes before then...
pps. but I am happy! :)

Well kids, the latch was a huge smack of buyers remorse for me. But I fixed it...as per Tom Greever's advice:

I've been working with Apple over the last several days to solve my latch issue. They also offered to replace the unit, or have me ship it to them for repair. However, because I'm leaving the country on Wednesday the time does not allow for either of these options... SO, my Apple rep. talked to engineering and they agreed to (for the sake of time) walk me through the process of repairing my PowerBook on the phone. Here's what they said:

With the PowerBook open, depress the latch button and notice how it move a small piece of metal inwards (toward the keyboard) to open the latch. When the latch is no longer secured by this piece of metal, it pops open. Obviously, if the latch itself was slightly bent towards the front of the PowerBook, it could easily pop open.

So, close the PowerBook to the point that the latch is drawn out and catch it with your finger. Hold onto the latch and raise the lid. Now, using gentle pressure, push downwards (toward the keyboard) on the latch. Only do it slightly. You are bending the latch downwards. Now close the PowerBook and see if it helps. If it is not quite where it needs to be, continue the process.

Be careful, because too much pressure could break the latch, or damage the unit. Do it in small increments until it works better.

I did this and my PowerBook works great now!

Is this for fixing the gap problem or was your latch not catching?

Re: Latch problem resolved

I tried the latch solution posted on my other powerbook 12" latch that was not catching (had to press for it to catch) and it works now. Still not as crisp but don't have to press it down now.

Thanks for the post!

It's back and ripping. Nothing to indicate that the superdrive had been replaced, other than it actually works now.

Worked on my dissertation while it was on my lap, and it certainly was not that uncomfortable. I certainly would not rip any cds or anything else processor intensive on my lap, though, since it does get hot under certain conditions. But, those are the time I would not likely have it on my lap.

Also, got about 3 hours from the battery (running the latest version of 10.2.8). I started ripping 5 cds, then started typing into Word with nothing else running (got my iPod plugged into my stereo so there is no need to run iTunes). The time left indicator was always underestimating time left though. Basically, it is unrealiable. I usually have it on % left anyway.

7200RPM drive in PB 17" 1.33Ghz!!

Evening all,

After an agonizing wait, got my new PB last Friday.

NO DEAD PIXELS!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Ran it for about 12 hours to check all hardware functions, then decided to do a Kodawarisan and stick my 7K60 60Gb 7200RPM drive in!!

Blimey, it flies. Unreal. Could someone tell me some software to benchmark it, & I can post the results??
Nice and cool too; loads of editing in FCExpress & Pro Tools 6.1.1.... No sweat. All the heat comes from the back of the machine (logic board & CPU)... NOT the HD.

For those who don't already know, the HD in both the new 15" and the 17" PBs is NOT a "user serviceable item".

So if you manage to shaft something whilst digging around inside, your warranty is INVALIDATED.

BUT......

....I am happy to announce that there are NO "warranty void if broken" type seals ANYWHERE in the new 17" PB. I'll say no more. :D
If you upgrade, just be bloody careful with all the mini ribbon connectors (keyboard & HD ones).... as they're WELL flimsy.

Take care, folks!

eM out.

That's pretty damn good if you were ripping cds during that time. You might be able to get 3.5+ hours out of it just doing email/browsing/text type stuff.

Now THAT requires some 'cojones'.

Well finally got it, PB 12 inch superdrive. One word sweet.
Was concerned about the heat issue I read so much about but really no worse than other lap tops I've seen.

just got my new 15" 1.25 ghz powerbook monday from macmall. booted it up for the first time, and BAM. it hung there frozen (stuck on the little twirly icon thing)! the thing wouldn't shut off at ALL.
tried booting up again after removing the battery and same thing. wow, was i flustered at this pt.
so i went in underneath and removed the ram chips (had free 512 MB RAM from macmall), switched them around, placed them in firmly and voila! success!
so where did my $39 installation and "configuration" charge go anyway :D ??

man this thing is frickin' sweat! hope none of you experience this problem yourselves :)

Batesie1,

Hope you called Macmall and asked for some compensation. $40 is a bit steep to begin with for just taking out a couple of screws and popping in a couple of chips. What, it maybe took you 10 minutes. At $400 an hour, you would think they could snap the chips in place properely.

2 minutes really :)
it's MANDATORY that you pay them the $40 to get the free RAM offer they have now. so hopefully after i get the rebate back for $110, a 512 MB chip will have cost me just the $40. hopefully...

gave up on apple today ..... rang them up and cancelled my order for a 15" powerbook . it still hadn't been shipped, I ordered on the 16th. really fcuked me off that they made me wait so long for nothing !!!!!

still ,phoned computerwarehouse (uk) and they had loads in stock.... so i placed an order and should get the powerbook tomorrow (9th) :D

last time I order hardware from the uk apple store.

I understand that Macmall would have a $40 fee. It is still a deal. That is, it is still a deal if you don't have to reinstall the chips they they improperly installed. At the very least, I would notify them of the issue. If you call them and tell them what happened, and they then offered something, then that would be a sign of a good company. I certainly don't believe in flying off the handle in response to what in the end was a small issue, but they should be aware of the issue so they at least have the opportunity to try to prevent it from happening to others.

It isn't a small issue If you paid for a service that wasn't performed properly. However, it is not unusual for RAM to come loose during shipping.

well, I'm a little irked, perhaps over-reacting. My new 15" was shipped from MacMall, I opted for the free ram upgrade, however, this was a mail-in rebate, not free right from the shopping cart. However, there is no type of mail-in form included with my order, so how do I go about getting my $150+ back for this ram? I know, I'll call MacMall directly, just need to vent a litte.

Add to that, 3 dead pixels, the latch issue, a battery that drains from 100 to dead in a little over an hour, etc. Seems like for a $2600 machine, qualilty control is less that stellar. I'm almost wanting to ask for a new machine. Who would take care of that if possible, MacMall, Apple, can I just take it to the Apple store here?

hat: On Sept 16th I called MacMall and they switched my back-order of a TiPB to a 15" AluBook; even tho they had to get their hands on the machine to upgrade the RAM, MacMall shipped it on the 19th and I had it the following day. No dead pixels. Don't know what the latch issue is. I had little trouble finding the rebate form on the MacMall website. Opted for the Epson C82 printer and am well pleased with it too.

Bag Reccomendations

My 15 inch AlPB 1.25 is incredible. I'm a Mac User for the rest of my life! I love the screen, OSX, light up keyboard, the size and look of it - I'm hooked. Anyway - I've got 2 questions.

The first is - sometimes when I try to edit my website on the Mac, it ends up putting in weird symbols, like "N"s with the weird accent on the top, and "I"s with accents - why does it do this - and is there anything I can do to fix it?

The 2nd one - I'm a college student and I am looking for a stylish bag for my new laptop. Ideally, I'd like a bag that can hold my laptop, and a few textbooks as well. I'd also LOVE it if the bag had a removable sleeve for just the laptop, so I could just carry that if all I needed was the laptop.

Please respond if you have any suggestions.

does anyone know, where to find live photos of the new powerbook line, especially the 15". (private reviews, etc...)

this would be a great help to make the right decision, which laptop to take (12", 15", or 17", or if neither of them are ok, the Toshiba R100)

thanks

Well my PB has one of the dreaded white spots on it...I sent it in to Apple on Friday. Hopefully I'll have it back soon. :(

I have the backbone of a sponge: every time someone praises the 15" I waiver toward the 15". Ditto with the 12".

/end whine

It probably has something to do with the type of text encoding that you use. I'm sure that your webpage editor has the option of changing it.
