I want to thank everyone for listening to my rants over the past couple of weeks. Airborne has indeed admitted that they lost my Powerbook and have no idea where it is. They are faxing this to Apple as I type this. Apple informed me that it would be another 2 weeks+ before I would get a replacement Powerbook so I cancelled the order. I wish the best of luck for everyone who is still waiting for their Powerbook to be shipped. I hope you don't run into the same problems I have.

Again, thanks for listening to the rants and all of the advice you have given me...but I just see no reason to wait another 2+ weeks to get a Powerbook.

I don't see any reason to do that.

Also some of the sites act funny with Internet Explorer or Safari especially the ones that run dll.
Safari is not perfect yet, even though it's come a long way. More often than not, when you encounter a problem on a page, IE is the solution. But don't rely on IE on the Mac, because it is really slow and buggy. Use Safari for browsing, and use IE on the webpages where you encounter problems.

And the way you put it into sleep mode is by closing the lid. ... I say this for those, like my econ professor, who choose Sleep from the Apple menu instead of just closing the PowerBook

What's wrong with choosing Sleep from the Apple menu??

Sorry to hear that. I know it must be a major disappointment. Unless you are getting an Edu discount or an Apple loan, have you considered Macmall? They drop $5 off the retail price and throw in double the ram for $40 (along with a free printer some other free software and stuff). All models are in stock and ready to ship (as of today 10/2), standard shipping is free and overnight is about $40 more. Best of all they ship FedEx, who seems to actual be capable of delivering their packages.

Best of luck, just trying to find you alternatives. I probably would have gone through MM if I didn't get a corporate Apple Store discount.

Is it possible your school's bookstore has them in stock now? Even if you had a BTO you could always just upgrade later if it were just the RAM or something you were adding.

It works fine, but there's a better way. If it's in sleep mode, you don't see anything on the screen, so why don't you just close the lid? It protects the screen and it's a lot easier.

yeah i agree with the closing the lid on the book... another way to put it to sleep is just hold down the power button. I do this with my iMac and the G5 we have at work. It helps especially at work, where many people use the G5.

You tap the button. Holding it down for five seconds shuts down the computer.

Wow. Are you skipping meals to afford all this?

Just skipping sleep, both mac's will earn their keep producing music & samples, should take about 3 months and my credit card will cool down.

I don't know if it's different on PBs (I can't remember how it was on my Ti667) but on my iBook, just tapping the power button brings up a dialog box Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shut Down, and you have to use the mouse to select, you can't use the arrow keys to choose (Grrrr!), so it sorta defeats the purpose.

On a laptop, that's certainly true, but not on a desktop. The laptop power button performs the same function as the old power key on Apple keyboards.

Unfortunately my school's store doesn't carry computers of any type.

Just press "S" on the keyboard.

New 12" Powerbook heat issues?

Has anyone actually laid hands on the new 12" PB yet ? I mean, literally laid hands on it... in terms of whether the heat still fries the palm of your left hand like it reportedly did on the earlier model. Has anyone heard a report of Apple having addressed this problem in the design of the new models ?

I would be interested to know that too.

Hey, I returned my first 15" because of a stuck pixel. Just got my replacement today, and it's got two stuck pixels, so I guess I got double the features.

But seriously, is there a problem with the new LCD's - did apple change suppliers or something. You'd think one of the two I got would be ok - I have a few friends with different rev Ti's, and none of their's have this problem.

Dead pixels have been part of all LCDs since the day of there creation. Your friend with the Tis was just lucky.

Apple's dead pixel policy is very strict (and complex), and you need to have something like 5+ dead pixels minimum to get a free replacement. I'm also very surprised that they took it back, was it a reseller? Apple will give them a hard time when they try to return it.

I've seen a lot of problems with the latches on the 15's, as well. I'm very disappointed that they can't make a good latch, considering the rash of problems with the old TiBook latches. The worst part is that everybody comes back to me expecting a straight replacement, but I can't guarantee that the next one won't have the same bad latch with an extra dead pixel thrown in for good measure. I just tell them to make Apple fix it, because an exchange is not the real solution to their problems.

I think Apple just worked overtime to get these built, and their quality control was pretty poor for their initial shipments. One 15" Powerbook came with a huge dent behind the LCD, something that never should have gotten past them. I've also had machines that wouldn't boot, and one with a drive that wouldn't read DVDs at all. They're going to spend a lot of money repairing these units, it's a shame. It also looks really bad for them to have such a high defect rate.

I got my new 12" PB earlier this week and heat is not an issue. I have been taking it to class everyday, using it on my lap and i haven't noticed the heat at all. I've actually found it to be MUCH cooler than my old 14" iBook which got extremely hot on both the bottom and the on left palm rest where the hard drive was.

Don't hesitate to get one of these beauties! These new 7447's are awesome, so much more responsive than my old pathetic 600mhz G3 iBook that had no business running OSX.

Easiest way to (kinda) replicate that is to drag your Macintosh HD icon (or the name of your drive if you renamed it) to the dock.

It'll will stay there. Then either click and hold if you have a one button mouse or right-click if you have a two button mouse. A menu will pop up and you can drill down into any folder you want, including your applications folder.

HTH!

MM

I find it easier to just drag the Applications folder to the dock, saves extra clicks when opening programs.

Also once the Apps folder is in the dock, if you click and hold on the icon a list view of the folder will pop up, not unlike the windows start menu.
