That’s one ugly watch. I do admit, Johnny Ive got one thing, and that is making an attractive smart watch.

This is a butchering of his iconic design. Sad day if true.

The protected dial and more ruggedized case is going to be a godsend for people who engage in certain activities, like biking, where gloves are often worn and can inadvertently turn the crown for example.

It will also be great if I can display more information during my workouts, many activities that involve altitude as a component of the workout don't show other information such as distance traveled.

At the end of the day I'll take function over form thanks.

This watch was in development for years, Ive stopped consulting only recently. So it is very likely he was involved in this design.

I mean… I dont know what to say lol…. It’s like we already know everything that’s announced. Secrets haven’t been spoiled this bad in a while
why does that matter though? lol. this happens every year. how often are we *truely* surprised?

and the leaks don’t matter because nothing beats the ACTUAL reveal. the high quality photos, the marketing videos/ads etc. you don’t TRULY know or like the product until they reveal it.

The way I type and sometimes bend my hand/wrist upwards, this notch thing is going to get in the way and I think be painful - its unfortunate. Why did they have to add this thing, it seems very unnecessary.

countless watches for generations have had crown guards like them, and you don’t notice them. further the Apple Watch is unique that despite being large, it is comparatively narrow in width unlike a uniform round watch, so the crown guard is even further from your wrist than on a regular watch. they thought of this… it won’t be an issue. i can’t make you like the look of it, but i think comfort fears of any of this are way overblown, its been thought of.

Actually, in my experience you need to hold it in your hands and use it to determine if you like it. In the event videos and marketing materials you also only get renders, not the real thing. I hope there will be hand-ons again this year now that the event is in-person again. I was missing those.

I miss the days where the Apple Events were still a surprise. They still get us occasionally but seems we know most everything beforehand now. I guess I could stay off of the web more.
Well, at least the disappointment doesn’t hit like a fist anymore.

A SUV Watch, i was expecting it to become smaller or more filigrane over time.

It’s possible that we’re going down the wrong rabbit trail, maybe we should be looking at foldable Apple Watch?

Just think, you too can pay the same price for your watch as a Macbook Air.

Those profit margins are sweet.

I have a stupid question for anyone who owns an Apple Watch. Is it bi-directional. Meaning I can wear it on either wrist and have it orient properly.

Cause I notice that the crown is on the right hand side of the watch. If I wear it on my right wrist so that the crown is on the left will the watch be upside down....or orient itself correctly for me being left handed?

Thanks for anyone's info. I can live in a right handed world, Just prefer not to. :)

Tom

You can already wear Apple Watch on your right wrist and flip the UI so the Digital Crown is facing out.

Your limb is about to break... better grab onto something.

Neither of us can be sure. My limbs are still holding true in my doubt that the Watch will look like that. I'm sure it'll look like an Apple Watch but the modifications made by this rendering don't jive with the goals of a Watch meant for rugged, physical environments. A bump there adds nothing. It feels more like the rendering artist looking to fill the space because they expect to have "something" there.

The case mold upon which the CAD drawing was based, and upon which this rendering was drawn – if it's even made with actual advanced knowledge of the design – is accounting for the space needed to occupy the topography of the Watch. It doesn't mean that all of that space will be filled with a bump, it could be an additional protruding button or even 2 round buttons next to a larger Digital Crown, with the pill shaped Dock button moved to the left side.

A few physical buttons would line up with a Watch meant to be used in rough environments and physical activities, where people may be wearing gloves, might be underwater or would benefit from just having repetitive actions engaged through muscle memory. I could even see each button and Digital Crown having 2 stage presses for 6 actions (not counting long presses), plus rotations, plus the dock button on the left.

Thinking a rectangular version of this button arrangement:

I like it. It solves a couple of issues I have with the current design. First, the guard for the digital crown, Second, since the strap doesn't have to be backwards compatible it doesn't feel out of proportion to the rest of the watch. As the Watches got bigger, they kept the same goofy dinky band width for backward compatibility. Third better battery life. Fourth, hopefully more durable.
Design wise, it looks nice, And I honestly have never seen ANYONE able to rock the current design and make it look good. It's practical, but the current design looks goofy on everyone.

Not going to lie, I like it and will buy it if these renders are accurate. The curved glass of the 45mm watch became almost obstructive when Apple basically went edge to edge with the larger display content. Prefer to see all the content flat, rather than the edges so curved with Apple Watch 7
