Gmail Chat works beautifully in Safari 3.0.4, available for Windows, Leopard and Tiger.
From many of the comments here I am getting the feeling that people here are still on Safari 2.x and complaining it sucks. So does Firefox 1.0...
apple didn't go with gecko because at that time, they think gecko is too big. they wanted something small and easy to work with.
apple did not build its own browser, it forked KHTML, (who is default browser in KDE linux desktop environment and was full featured at that time), named it webkit, at that time, KHTML was said to have only 140,000 line of codes.
but now, webkit is getting bigger and bigger (i don't know the line of codes, but firefox 3 is 4MB smaller than firefox 2 after decompression, 44 vs 48MB; while webkit nightly now is 4 MB bigger than safari 3.0.4; 66MB vs. 60Mb), surprisingly, still have very few improvement in functionality.
OSX is using old version of java, and I don't know (altho I would like) if and when apple will update this.
Firefox 3 for windows/linx will use java 1.6.
Really? I'm running Leopard (10.5.2), and the latest build of Safari. I've turned on the latest version of Gmail, and I have no option for chat. There's nothing in Settings, either.
Try signing-out of Gmail completely. Gmail seems to load a different page once it detects you are on Safari 3. I even have an "Older version" option in the top right if I want to load the non-Chat version.
I have been using Gmail Chat for day to day IMing for a few weeks now, and I am 100% Safari, on Mac and Windows too. No idea why anyone would pick another browser. Safari is the fastest, and has the cleanest, nicest UI. Feature-rich too.
Heck, I don't even really care, as I'm a Firefox nut. I love the AdBlock Plus plugin.

And I love the Pith helmet adblock for Safari.
I don't know why a simple adblock plugin for safari would be packed in a installer and asks for my administrator password to proceed with installation. I just can't do it.
Fair enough. That is good thinking (I'm not being sarcastic). However, PithHelmet has been out for years, and it's working exactly as it should be. There is no malware in it. If there were, you'd quickly have an uproar and anger towards Mike Solomon.
Obviously it not just the looks. It's the feel.
if as I suspected, improvement is only on javascript and bug/security fix. I don't see how mobileSafari on iphone can benefit significantly. Will improvements in the desktop version of Safari trickle down to the iPhone? That is truly where we need more "snappiness."

Until Safari supports Gmail Chat (Google Talk), I won't use it. I think it's stupid that I can use basic Gmail features in Safari, which is supposed to be the latest-greatest-it-peels-potatoes browser!
I don't if the fact Google Talk doesn't work in Safari is Google's fault, or Apple's. They're working together so well on the iPhone that I would expect them to also work together on Safari.
as i am on a windows machine and used the safari beta and it been a beta cant complain it loaded the same as firefox beat the crap out of ie and frankly lets face it they have been busy with the iphone and the airbook just look at the stuff they have to keep tabs on now i understand why there staff is so huge. Stuff worrying about this kind of none usefull info use the software or dont simple as that i mean honestly concidering the fact that there addressing the issues it takes time cant expect it to happen over night sadly
Yup, I was very surprised to learn that there are more to usage than just eyecandy and colours
