Gmail Chat works beautifully in Safari 3.0.4, available for Windows, Leopard and Tiger.

From many of the comments here I am getting the feeling that people here are still on Safari 2.x and complaining it sucks. So does Firefox 1.0...

I would tend to think that the perceived performance of a given browser has more to do with how good your Internet connection is. The time spent retrieving pages over the net would seem to be a much longer period of time than the actual amount of time spent rendering the page. So if it takes 100ms to render a page, or 200ms, it would be hard for the average user to pick up on this if it takes 1500ms to actually retrieve the content.

Of course, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Internet connections have gotten so fast that it makes the internal routines local to the computer the actual bottleneck?

Really? I'm running Leopard (10.5.2), and the latest build of Safari. I've turned on the latest version of Gmail, and I have no option for chat. There's nothing in Settings, either.

apple didn't go with gecko because at that time, they think gecko is too big. they wanted something small and easy to work with.

apple did not build its own browser, it forked KHTML, (who is default browser in KDE linux desktop environment and was full featured at that time), named it webkit, at that time, KHTML was said to have only 140,000 line of codes.

but now, webkit is getting bigger and bigger (i don't know the line of codes, but firefox 3 is 4MB smaller than firefox 2 after decompression, 44 vs 48MB; while webkit nightly now is 4 MB bigger than safari 3.0.4; 66MB vs. 60Mb), surprisingly, still have very few improvement in functionality.

OSX is using old version of java, and I don't know (altho I would like) if and when apple will update this.

Firefox 3 for windows/linx will use java 1.6.

I knew they used webkit. If Apple hadn't insisted on building their own browser they could've just used FF and improved on it instead.

Here is my wish list for Safari:

1) Improved Speed
2) Improved compatibility (Many sites/site features still don't work)
3) Enhanced stability
4) Cover-flow option for bookmarks, history, and downloads
5) Multiple search providers available from drop-down in Search Box (Amazon, Apple Store, IMDB, Wikipedia, Custom)
6) Search Box auto-complete/suggestions
7) "Mute/Volume" button for web audio
8) Downloads in drawer or tab instead of pop-up window. Ability to search, quick look, and launch downloads within said area. Ideally, it would be contained in the "collections" section with history and bookmarks.
9) Ability to view/use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Pages, Keynote, Numbers and other files within the browser (similar to current PDF ability)
10) Phishing Filter

Try signing-out of Gmail completely. Gmail seems to load a different page once it detects you are on Safari 3. I even have an "Older version" option in the top right if I want to load the non-Chat version.

I have been using Gmail Chat for day to day IMing for a few weeks now, and I am 100% Safari, on Mac and Windows too. No idea why anyone would pick another browser. Safari is the fastest, and has the cleanest, nicest UI. Feature-rich too.

Tip to make Safari even snappier...

I just changed DNS service providers to OpenDNS and it made a big difference. So much for Comcast's DNS. :p

I've tried this several times, including complete system restarts. It makes no sense (my gf's computer is the same). I might call Apple.

Heck, I don't even really care, as I'm a Firefox nut. I love the AdBlock Plus plugin.

I for one would like a Safari that doesn't freeze every so often if I have more than one page open and then force me to force quit every damn page and start from scratch. My ridiculous pc never does this which I find most frustrating!!!

And I love the Pith helmet adblock for Safari.

I don't know why a simple adblock plugin for safari would be packed in a installer and asks for my administrator password to proceed with installation. I just can't do it.

I may try Safari again. My experiences on my Cube, my 1.5 GHz Powerbook, and my friend's second gen. MacBook Pro have been that Firefox is consistently faster than Safari. I know this is opposite of what many others have experienced, but for me, the difference is very noticeable to the naked eye.

Fair enough. That is good thinking (I'm not being sarcastic). However, PithHelmet has been out for years, and it's working exactly as it should be. There is no malware in it. If there were, you'd quickly have an uproar and anger towards Mike Solomon.

Actually, Netscape 4.7.9 was the fastest browser for the hardware of the time. It was the first browser I used on my Cube and it flew, even considering that I was using dial-up at the time!

I don't put my trust on one person. I mentioned months ago when somebody asked us to try a new webkit based browser. which was a pkg installer and asked for admin password. I just can't do it.

Call it windows users' self-protection. I think its very important.

If Mr. Solomon would remove that barrier, I would be very glad to try out his product and then make comparison with adblock+ for firefox.

Snap my iPhone

Will improvements in the desktop version of Safari trickle down to the iPhone? That is truly where we need more "snappiness."

if as I suspected, improvement is only on javascript and bug/security fix. I don't see how mobileSafari on iphone can benefit significantly.

Christ on a pogo stick

Yup, I was very surprised to learn that there are more to usage than just eyecandy and colours …

I mean, I actually thought that a car with spoilers and skirts, all of it painted red, were faster than one in an ordinary colour with no chrome. Imagine that!

as i am on a windows machine and used the safari beta and it been a beta cant complain it loaded the same as firefox beat the crap out of ie and frankly lets face it they have been busy with the iphone and the airbook just look at the stuff they have to keep tabs on now i understand why there staff is so huge. Stuff worrying about this kind of none usefull info use the software or dont simple as that i mean honestly concidering the fact that there addressing the issues it takes time cant expect it to happen over night sadly

Until Safari supports Gmail Chat (Google Talk), I won't use it. I think it's stupid that I can use basic Gmail features in Safari, which is supposed to be the latest-greatest-it-peels-potatoes browser!

I don't if the fact Google Talk doesn't work in Safari is Google's fault, or Apple's. They're working together so well on the iPhone that I would expect them to also work together on Safari.

Uhhh GTalk worked for me in 3.04 and it has also been working for me in all of the ADC seeds...

you would be correct, if safari is indeed demanding alot of energy from apple.

However, webkit is a so-called "open source project", at least before they quit OSS. Apple shouldn't feel too much demand from them. and webkit developers aren't necessarily hired by apple or work for apple.

Well, so why stick with Safari then? That's the one with the eye candy. On functionality, Firefox wipes the floor with Safari, even without plugins.
